France - Best of Normandy Cycling Tour
Cycling in Normandy is an adventure through history, and an adventure to discover unique traditions and wonderful food and drink, unique to Normandy. Most famous for the dairy products, you will of course recognize Camembert cheese, but have you discovered Calvados apple whiskey?! A great digestif. Normandy's wonderful coastline, endless woodlands and manicured countryside combine to make this the perfect environment for an adventurous cycling tour. You can relive a major part of modern history when visiting the famous landing beaches used by the Allied forces to liberate France and Europe during World War II. In addition, the gastronomical delights of this region won't disappoint you with the famous camembert cheese, crepes, apple cider and Calvados as emblems of this beautiful and green region of France and of course the impossible Mont St Michel which caps off an amazing week of cycle touring in France.

DAY 3 | Bayeux to St Lo (50, or 66kms)

This morning you ride through beautiful countryside to Omaha beach and the very emotional American War Cemetery. Then you can carry on to the Pointe du Hoc, Grandcamp and the German Cemetery of la Cambe for the longer ride or head south through the Marsh towards Saint-Lô. The city of Saint-Lô was probably the most heavily bombed and fought for during the Battle of Normandy. It took American soldiers almost 3 weeks to clear the area from the coast to Saint Lo. The ride goes through a mixture of “Bocage” and wood land. You will have the opportunity to visit the great Chateau of Balleroy half-way down the road.

DAY 4 | St Lo to Granville (64 kms)

DAY 4 | St Lo to Granville (64 kms)

Today is probably the most demanding stage! After following the Vire River you are riding through the Bocage Normand; the term Bocage means a type of landscape with some unique element of vegetation. It is hilly and fields are separated with natural hedges. This bocage was a bit of a nightmare for the allies as it made their progression difficult; the hedgerows especially. Apart from that aspect it is a very picturesque country side with grazing cows, apple orchards, isolated farms and loads of little creeks. You won’t see any tourist on that stage but a few authentic villages where it will be nice to stop for a drink or a snack. You hit the coast 15km north of Granville, and along this coast you will see the 'sea farmers' at work!

DAY 8 | Cancale to St Malo (32kms)

DAY 8 | Cancale to St Malo (32kms)

The port of Cancale is the farm-raised oyster capital of France. The perfect place to stop for lunch! From Cancale, it is a only a few kms to the Grouin Hedland and the open sea. Your last ride on this tour will be along the Cote d’Emeraude. This route will give you fine views of the Isles of Chaussey. On the clear blue waters, it is not uncommon to spot dolphins. Arriving Saint-Malo, you will find your hotel on the sea front at very short distance to the inner walled city! Built on the estuary of the River Rance, Saint Malo is a truly remarkable site. Its access to the sea and its position at the frontier between Brittany and the Kingdom of France have made it the subject of many disputes in the past. In the 16th century the port grew incredibly fast with the development of its fishing fleet and the discovery of Canada. Names such as Jacques Cartier, Duguay-Trouin, Surcouf, Chateaubriand and Maupertui will remain forever associated with the town.
