France - Loire Royal Valley Cycling Tour
One of the most popular cycling tour regions in France is the Loire Valley - and for good reason: The Loire region has been rich in history since the time of the Romans and the birth of Christianity, the period of English superiority, and the era of the Plantagenets. It was also the dwelling place for the Kings of France during the Renaissance. As a result, there are medieval to renaissance era castles to visit, large private estates and castle hotels to lodge you, excellent wine and gastronomy of course! If you want to see as much as possible and your time is limited, then this tour is the one for you! The cycling is fairly short and takes you to the best sites of the region! A choice of upgraded superior hotels or modest but very good hotels are offered. The riding is rolling, moderate, and accessible to most regular leisure cyclists.

Day 1 | Arrive in Amboise

Day 1 | Arrive in Amboise

Your arrival town is Amboise, located right on the Loire River, and accessible from Paris by train. On the south side of the river lies the town centre and castle, where the French kings spent their childhoods during the XV and XVI centuries. In town there is also a museum displaying many of the inventions of Leonardo da Vinci, who spent the last few years of his life here until he died in 1519. The center has very nice walking streets, pastry shops, cafes, and wine shops with 'degustation'! Allow some time to visit and if in summer, take in the Sound and Light show at the Castle this evening. Orientation and bike delivery will be tonight or tomorrow morning at your hotel; we confirm time with your booking. Dinner on your own. (B)

Manoir Les Minimes

Amboise

Manoir Les MinimesPicture-perfect and as well cared for as all get out, this gorgeously stylish hotel is lucky enough to preside over a Loire riverbank under the shadow of Amboise great cliffside chateau. Set within its own compound and centered around a grass parterre, this quaintly shuttered manoir looks like it is on sabbatical from a Fragonard landscape -- a pavillon in the 18th-century style, it is a refreshing change from the usual Renaissance castle-style so prevalent in these parts. Inside, the grand staircase (note: no elevator), dining room, and main salon are all a-dazzle in daffodil yellow silks and gilt-framed mirrors, with ruby accents of the Louis Seize sofas and bergeres. The standard guest rooms are pleasant enough -- three are set in an adjoining, trellised annex -- but try to spring for the showpieces, such as the Suite Prestige in a stunning blue toile de Jouy, which are stunners. Happily, most rooms have charming views of the château, even the smaller dormer rooms on the top floor.

Day 2 | Ride to Chenonceau and Montrichard - 24 or 45 km

Start your morning as you wish; breakfast on your time, and then after you can get kitted up to ride! One of the advantages of a self-guided trip is you set your schedule each day - enjoy! The highlight of today’s ride is the chateau of Chenonceau, the most romantic of all the Loire chateaux. It actually sits on the Cher River, whose waters reflect the pale stone of the beautiful turrets and arches, and was the home of both Catherine de Medicis and Diane de Poitiers. Take your time for a good visit and you may want to pack a lunch from Amboise to enjoy here as well. After, continue on to the village of Montrichard, which faces the Cher River at the footsteps of the fortress built in 1121. You stay here tonight, dinner included. (B,D)

Auberge du Bon Laboureur

Chenonceaux

Auberge du Bon LaboureurThe hotel du Bon Laboureur is a charming inn located just a stone’s throw from the Château of Chenonceau, the most gracious of all the Loire Valley Châteaux ; it is a former Postal Relay whose foundations date back to 1786. Antoine Jeudi settled there in 1902 and it is his great grandson, Antoine, who now watches over this cosy old residence.

Day 3 | Ride to Cheverny and Chitnay - 36 or 45 km

Another 'royal' day of castles! Today you are away from the main tourist routes on your bike, where you will frist see some Troglodyte houses along the Cher Valley. You ride through vineyards and woods until the attractive village of Fougères sur Bievre with its Feudal Chateau. There is then about 15kms left to get to the Villages of Chitnay and then near Cheverny to a nice castle hotel near to the famous Cheverny Castle. As tomorrow is a big day, you may want to take time to visit Cheverny, by bike, today. Dinner included again. (B,D)

Chateau Du Breuil

Day 4 | Ride to Blois - 37 or 45 km

Day 4 | Ride to Blois - 37 or 45 km

The ride today takes you north through forests to find the amazing chateau of Chambord, the masterpiece of the French renaissance, completed in 1545. After the visit, you cross the Loire River to ride the north bank downstream toward Blois. This is definitely one of the most pleasant section of the Loire to ride along. You eventually get into the royal city of Blois where Louis XII was born. The fine castle is full of history - assassinations were perpetrated here, and there are beautiful examples of different architectural styles. Blois is also a nice walking town around the center where you will find shops and restaurants. (B)

Day 5 | Ride back to Amboise - 42 km

Day 5 | Ride back to Amboise - 42 km

The final day of cycling is basically following the Loire Valley South. Half way down is the chateau of Chaumont-sur-Loire. This was originally built during the wars between the counts of Anjou and Blois in the 11th century on a very strategic point along the river. Remodeled and rebuilt over the centuries by various owners including Catherine de Medici, the castle is now a venue for the International Garden Festival. Once back in Amboise you can take your remaining time to visit any of the places you missed at the beginning of this cycling tour. Celebrate your last night with some local wines! Dinner on your own.
