Day 1 | Arrival to Burgos

Burgos is the historic capital of Castile and still preserves important vestiges of its medieval splendour. The city, which was the capital of the unified kingdom of Castilla-Leon for five centuries, boasts a masterpiece of Spanish Gothic architecture: the cathedral of Burgos, declared World Heritage. Aside from a visit to the historic quarter, you can take a quite interesting walk along the banks of the Duero and Arlanza rivers. Great places to approach a delicious, varied cuisine. Overnight in Burgos.

NH Palacio de la Merced

The NH Collection Palacio de Burgos hotel is located in the heart of Burgos, by the River Arlanzón and a few minutes’ walk from the cathedral. The building itself is every bit as impressive as the setting – a magnificent Gothic creation built in the 16th and 17th centuries. The hotel features some rooms with spectacular views of the cathedral and river as well as an award-winning restaurant.

Day 2 | Walk to Hornillos del Camino - 19 km, 5 hrs

Some guidebooks and pilgrim’s stories suggest that the Meseta is a rather boring and monotonous landscape. Some pilgrims even prefer to take the bus or train from Burgos to León. They are missing a great deal of the experience: the great agricultural plain of Burgos, Palencia and León as well as the small hills, valleys and cropland. It is a hard country and wind, cold and rain can make each hike a great effort. We think it is well worth this effort, because these landscapes belong to the Camino just like Pyrenees, the vineyards of Navarra and the green Galicia. It’s the land of knights and Old Castile! Overnight in Hornillos del Camino.

Day 4 | Walk to Fromista - 25 km, 6-7 hrs

Tierra de Campos - a vast, desolate plain with practically no relief, except for some wide undulations of the terrain. A fertile, elevated plateau with an average height of around 720 meters (2,360 ft), its geography is typical of the Meseta Central. The ground is mostly made up of quite compact clay. The climate is continental with long, cold winters and short, hot summers. Rivers naturally irrigating the area are sparse and traditionally the land in Tierra de Campos has been used for dry-land farming. The Channel of Castile, which cuts across this comarca, was developed for transport purposes but developed into an irrigation system. Overnight in Fromista.
