Day 1 | Arrival to Logroño

Explore the capital of the region La Rioja which has one of the most distinguished culinary traditions in Spain. There are over 50 taperías (tapas restaurants) located within a 4 block area, near the town center. The Camino reaches the city centre over the Stone Bridge and crosses the Old Town passing the Pilgrim's hostal. Overnight in Logroño.

Day 2 | Walk to Navarette - 13 km, 3-4 hrs

Today ii is fairly obvious that we are near a large city - There can be the sound of traffic from the motorway and at times you have to cross it on a footpath and go under it by way of underpasses. The Camino reaches the dyke of the La Grajera Reservoir and goes along the edge of the reservoir. The way passes next to the ruins of the Hospital de San Juan de Acre before reaching Navarrete. Overnight in Navarette.

Day 3 | Walk to Nájera - 16 km, 4-5 hrs

A short day and it is good to have days that are not as hard on the body now and then. During the first half of the route today the path hugs the main N120. After it crosses the road, about halfway, the track is further from the road. It is an easy walk along red earth tracks among the local vineyards. Overnight in Nájera.

Day 4 | Walk to Santo Domingo de la Calzada - 21 km, 5-6 hrs

The route goes up hill along a dirt track through pine tree and across farmland heading towards Azofra, the first place to stop for another breakfast and coffee. From Azofra, there is a choice of routes. The main route continues alongside the N120 straight into Santo Domingo. The other route heads left uphill towards Cirueña and then back down over rough tracks to Santo Domingo. The second route is the preferred route, unless you are in a hurry. Transition from the vineyards of La Rioja to the La Rioja of croplands around Cirueña. Overnight in Santo Domingo de la Calzada.

Day 5 | Walk to Belorado - 22 km, 5-6 hrs

Once again the Camino Frances follows closely to the N120. Most of the day it runs alongside and occasionally takes detours into towns and across fields. The route is fairly easy going, but as usual on the Camino there are many ups and downs. Overnight in Belorado.

Day 6 | Walk to Villafranca Montes de Oca - 12 km, 3-4 hrs

As has been the way for the last few days the Camino Frances hugs the N120 for the most part of the day. Overnight in Villafranca Montes de Oca. Note: Strong hikers may combine this walk with Day 7.

Day 7 | Walk to Atapuerca - 18 km, 5 hrs

From the Montes de Oca into the Meseta plateau in Castile. The climb can be steep at times and unpleasant if it is raining as the path will turn to mud quickly. The saving grace are the trees where shade is available for this part of the Camino. Overnight in Atapuerca.

Day 8 | Walk to Burgos - 23 km, 5-6 hrs

The Montes de Oca are behind us and they bring us to a totally different landscape - the Meseta, a plateau at about 800-900m which accompanies the pilgrim for at least 10 days until after Astorga. The last part of the walk into Burgos is through an industrial area, you will pass an army base, old mines, and communications masts for the last 10 km. Take a bus or taxi from Hotel Buenos Aires to avoid walking through the suburbs (saves about 5 km. Not included in tour price). Overnight in Burgos.

End of tour. Or maybe spend some extra time in this wonderful city. Burgos is the historic capital of Castile and still preserves important vestiges of its medieval splendour. The city, which was the capital of the unified kingdom of Castilla-Leon for five centuries, boasts a masterpiece of Spanish Gothic architecture: the Cathedral of Burgos, declared World Heritage. Aside from a visit to the historic quarter, you can take a quite interesting walk along the banks of the Duero and Arlanza rivers. Great places to approach a delicious, varied cuisine.Or add stage 3 to León - the choice is yours, and we can arrange it for you!

Dates: Any date available on request from April through October. This is self-guided touring and offers total freedom of dates - you can choose whatever dates you wish. We can accommodate small parties of 2 persons up to large groups. For your safety we do not make reservations for solo travelers, minimum of 2 participants required. Custom guided groups are possible for groups of 6 or more; please inquire.
Level 2 - Moderate - rolling countryside, occasional hills, possible short gradients of low percents but lower mileage. These are available to most people of some experience and average fitness who are working out regularly. This is a self guided tour - see what all that includes!
 
Arrival & Departure: Logroño (arrival) and Burgos (departure) can be reached by plane (only domestic flights), train and bus with many daily connections to Madrid and less to Barcelona. Take a taxi on your own to your first hotel and to the station from your last hotel.
