Two of the most famous wineries of La Rioja, Viña Tondonia and Muga, are located in Haro. Both of them have their own cooperage that you can see working if you visit them on a weekday. Day 4 | Bike to Santo Domingo de la Calzada "Wine Culture Museum" - 34km

Day 4. Wine Culture Museum. Haro – Santo Domingo de la Calzada Distance: 34 km Along the first part of this route, to Briones, the countryside is very flat and still full of vineyards. At Briones you will find located there the Wine Culture Museum, of Dinastía Vivancos, that is worth a visit. From Briones on you will leave La Rioja wines to enter a more unknown Rioja, with a landscape that turns to be more Castilian, with grain/cereal fields and just a few vineyards. The finishing point today will be Santo Domingo de la Calzada, a village linked to the Way of Saint James (Camino de Santiago) from its origins back in the 11th Century. Dinner tonight is included at the restaurant Los Caballeros, wine included. (B,D) Ride note: 60% of the route is unpaved today.

Parador de Santo Domingo Bernardo de Fresneda

Santo Domingo de la Calzada

Parador de Santo Domingo Bernardo de Fresneda

This beautiful Parador is located in the Monastery of San Francisco, 800 meters from the historic town center of Santo Domingo de la Calzada. The building is divided three sections: church, workshop/museum and guest house, with the hotel being located in the last of these. The décor features predominantly contrasting elements, with red tones and blue-grays in the guest rooms, oil paintings with religious themes and works by modern graphic artists. Because of its location on the Way of St. James, the Parador is the ideal spot for rural tourism. Visitors can also enjoy sports such as golf or hiking and the Valdezcaray ski resort. Santo Domingo de la Calzada stands beside the banks of the Oja River on a vast plain. The town's founding is linked to the branch of the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela known as the French Route. Legend has it that in the 11th century, this location was a large holm oak forest on the banks of a tumultuous river that descended from the nearby mountains, now known as the Sierra de la Demanda. A hermit named Domingo took up residence in the heart of the forest, dedicating all his energy to making it easier for pilgrims traveling to Compostela to cross this difficult terrain. Today you can enjoy the town by visiting sights such as the cathedral or Plaza de España (Spain Square) and savoring La Rioja's delicious cuisine.

"First of all, let me thank you and your company for the wonderful experience we had in Spain on our cycling and cooking trip. This holiday was among the best! The cycling, which was our first experience with this form of transportation on a holiday, was fabulous! The arrangements and accommodations were all outstanding. Everything worked out just as promised!
Bo, your representative in Girona, was superb. He was very helpful, gave detailed instructions, was very accommodating and went the extra mile for us, picking us up a day before the others to get us to Girona in time for our train (and also purchasing our train tickets for us).
The cycling routes chosen were just right for us... not to difficult, not too demanding for novice cyclists, but still challenging enough to make us sweat a bit. The beautiful scenery, the slow pace and the good company made this a magical experience. The cooking classes were interesting, informative and enjoyable. And the meal at the end was delicious every time. The winery tour was excellent. What an interesting piece of modern architecture... like a work of underground art. The lunch in the garden overlooking the vineyard was superb as well... along with the wonderful wine.
Bo's suggestions for the side trips to the lighthouse, the botanical gardens and the San Michel Monastery/Chapel near Madramanya were great (if a little more difficult) diversions from the main route. The maps were clear and very well laid out. We made a few wrong turns, but never felt lost.
In short, an extraordinary experience, in many parts due to your company's work. Thank you very much.
