Day 1 | Arrival in Matera (Loop Ride options: 45km or 66km)

Arrive in Matera, the only town located out of Puglia along this trip. We include Matera on this trip is because it's a unique and truly breathtaking ancient city. Matera is one of the most fascinating historical sites in Italy. Its old quarters, I Sassi, or stones is listed into the UNESCO world heritage site list since 1993. This part of the town is like an enormous sculpture, like a miracle of urban planning which has resisted a myriad of elements over thousands of years of history. Built at the confluence of two small limestone valleys on the right slope of a ravine, Matera is a tangle of alleys, squares, neighborhoods, caves, and cellars sunk deep into the bowels of the earth. Once in Matera our local representative will welcome you and help you set up your rental bikes. Dinner on your own, the Sassi offers a large variety of pizzeria and restaurants from which you can choose. RIDING today: we recommend arriving a day early to fully enjoy the optional rides available. Trains from Bari are 1.5 hours. There is much to see and do in Matera!

Hotel Sassi

Matera

Hotel SassiThe Hotel Sassi, the first hotel in the Sassi (1996) came into being refurbishing a series of dwellings spread out over an area, some of them partly built up and partly dug, going back to the 1500s. It is located in the Sasso Barisano quarter, between via san Giovanni Vecchio at the top and via Fiorentini down below, just a short distance away from Matera’s main square, Piazza Vittorio Veneto. The hotel has a breathtaking panoramic view and, being situated in a pedestrian area, a peaceful quiet atmosphere is guaranteed. The Hotel Sassi has 35 rooms, each one unique. It is a so-called “albergo diffuso” that is to say, a hotel that spreads out on various levels to include rooms facing onto an outdoor area known as “vicinato” (neighbourhood). The rooms and common areas are connected by an indoor lift. The entire complex is surrounded by panoramic terraces with a view of the Cathedral and the old quarter, known as Sasso Barisano. Spending the night in one of the rooms of the Hotel Sassi is a completely new experience. In fact, the rooms are authentic dwellings set in the labyrinth of this extraordinary age-old city whose origins are lost in time. All the rooms are equipped with heating/air conditioning, free wi-fi , telephone, minibar, hair-dryer and flat screen TV.
