Day 1 | Arrival in Avignon
Arrival in Avignon, by train, or plane. Depending on your arrival hours you might be able to explore the city on the Rhône River. If you have extra time you can visit The Palais des Papes, or admire cathedral Notre Dame des Doms from 12th century, or just leisurely visit The Ramparts (monument from 14th century), one of the finest examples of medieval fortification in existence; strong walls, with 39 massive towers. Our representative will meet you at the hotel where will you spend your first night. Get ready for your first riding day tomorrow.
Situated in a historical building dating back to the XVIth century, Hotel Cloitre Saint Louis Avignon offers an extremely quiet and serene environment. Initially a religious school for Jesuits, the Cloister saw its function changed over the centuries to a military hospital, and a home for the elderly. After a thorough renovation in 1990, the building is now a prominent cultural center and a four star hotel. Rooms and facilities are found both in the ancient cloister, and in the splendid modern extension designed by the famous French achitect from Nouvel.
Day 2 | From Avignon to Rochegude (55km)
As you leave Avignon, crossing the Rhône River and arriving in Villeneuve les Avignon, also a former seat of the church as the Cardinal's palace was here in Villeneuve, while just behind in Avignon is a panorama of The Popes’ Palace. Continue on to north to the world famous wine village of Chateauneuf du Pape. Maybe a good place for a lunch stop and a sample of the local product! Then continue on to Orange where you can begin to see some Roman ruins that will be recurring on this itinerary. From Orange, you continue to the tiny village of Rochegude and the very deluxe Chateau de Rochegude, part of Relais and Chateau hotel group. Vallon Pont d'Arc is the gateway town to all these sites. You continue on to the little village of Bessas, still in the Ardeche department and overnight at a 3 star guest house 4km away.
