Catalonia Hiking - Spain



This week's hiking tour of Spain, near to Girona, really spends most of the time on or near the Mediterranean Coast along the 'Baix Emporda'. The trail is a recently improved and well marked route that is part of a larger regional trail system.

The coastal paths go through this area known as the Empordanet where you pass towns like Palamos with its unique fishing port. At Begur you have steep and narrow streets, and other small fishing villages such as Calella de Palafrugell and Llafranc which retain an old world charm. Lodging is in small and comfortable hotels of 3 and 4 star quality. Comfort and charm; this is a way to discover Catalonia Off the Beaten Path!

General Tour Information

Duration - 7 days & 6 nights. Options to add 1 or 2 more nights. Or, option to cut to 5 nights.
Guided trips possible for groups of 6 or more.

Dates 2011 - On request from April to November; July and August are not recommended because of heat. No minimums.

Level 2+
Consistently rolling countryside with flatter inland areas; moderate terrain requires regular cycling fitness; longer routes and additional riding possible. Temps vary from 20C to 30C; but can go as high as 40C in high summer.

Day 1 | Arrival in Girona and Transfer to Torroella de Montgri

Arrival in Girona train station or airport between 12:00 and 5 PM and be transferred directly to your deluxe 4 star bike hotel just 7 km from the beach. You will have an orientation. After, you can take a dip in the swimming pool, or go for a walk to the beach, or simply enjoy the peace of this pleasant setting. If you want to ride to the beach and back, ask at the hotel about their bikes. Dinner included. (D)

Days 2 | Loop Hike - 15km

From the hotel you have a view of the Massif Montgri, a large bump produding out over the coast, and this is the objective today. At the highest point on the top of the bump you are at 200 meters above sea level. The massif offers a great panorama. Gradient is very moderate. Return to your hotel. (B,D)

Days 3 | Torroella to Begur - 19 km

Leaving the hotel you go south in the direction of the Begur Massif at an elevation of 220m and then to the town of Begur itself, a picturesque village with a medieval castle to explore. Night and dinner in Begur. (B,D)

Days 4 | Begur to Calella de Palafrugell - 17km

Strolling along the coastal pathway, you can enjoy the marvelous coastal countryside. At the destination, your hotel in Palafrugell, you sit on a clifftop and have a magnificent view over the village of Calella. This old town retains historical charm of an old fishing village. Days 5 | Calella de Palafrugell to Palamos/La Fosca - 13 km

The route today goes through the lovely Castell cover, then after rounding the forested area of Cap Roig (130m in elev), you arrive at a nice panorama of the coast again. Continue on the village and your hotel. (B,D)

Day 7 | Departure or optional stay

Return transfer to Girona included. Added stays on the beach or in Girona or Barcelona are possible. Please inquire. Trains between Girona and Barcelona are about 1.5 hours on average, plus another 40 minutes to the BCN airport. (B)

[Click for image] Included; Custom hybrid; aluminum frame with carbon fork, Shimano Ultegra or Deore; 3x9. Bikes come equipped with handlebar bag, lock, water bottle, gel saddle, tire repair kit, cycle computer. Hybrids are fitted with thin tires for better road performance. Racing models also available. Hilly terrain, rated as intermediate to advanced. All towns where lodging is located are perched hilltop villages. A Cannondale tandem is also available for experienced tandem riders. Persons from 5 ft to 6-5 can be accommodated. Bike quality is top; averaging $1500 each retail. No reduction on tour price for customers who bring their own bikes.
