Get off the beaten trail but remain in Tuscany? Yes, it is possible in the Maremma region in western Tuscany and this trip brings you all that. The trip does start in the famous hilltop town of Pienza but the remaining villages are not quite as famous as the other Tuscany, but the area is no less interesting for cycling! The ancient hot springs and thermal baths along the way allow for you to relax as did the Romans, but for you after a day on your bike! You will find delicious wines, excellent lodging, and a seaside finish and at the end you will have seen a part of Tuscany that others rarely visit! The hilly terrain makes this tour somewhat challenging!

What do people say? "I just wanted to let you know that I enjoyed the bike trip in Maremma. As usual in Tuscany, there was good weather, good food and good people. I liked that part of Tuscany because there was less tourists and less traffic. The Tuscan countryside was beautiful. The best ride was on the last day from Scansano to Talamone, mostly downhill with good views of the landscape. " Tom M - USA

DAY 1 DAY 2 DAY 3 DAY 4 DAY 5 DAY 6 DAY 7

maremma tuscany cyclingDay 1 | Arrival Day - we will meet you at your hotel in Pienza. Arrive by train at Chiusi and either bus or taxi to hotel.

We'll meet you at Pienza, the purest Renaissance town in the world (you will arrive by the train to Chiusi-Chianciano station, a major stop on all the Rome-Florence lines). Your charming hotel overlooks the val d'orcia. Pienza is a rare masterpiece: entirely rebuilt between 1459 and 1462, it was the brainstorm of Pope Pius II and today is memorable not only for its architectural purity but also for its exquisite food shops. As you stroll through the pristine streets, you might decide to stock up on truffle-flavoured cheese, wild herbs or other delicacies to take home or to use for an informal dinner with a bottle of Chianti wine. Or maybe you'd rather reward yourself with some ice cream at our favorite gelateria. Dinner on your own. .

This is a great lunch stop, and then after you can continue to the hillside town of Celle Sul Rigo and then San Casciano Bagni and its hot springs with 42 springs, and an average temperature of 42°C; and a daily delivery of 5.5 million litres (third in Europe)! pitigliano tuscany italy bike tourDay 3 | Loop tour; Sarteano and Cetona; Distance 45 km.

Cetona is situated on the slopes of the mountain of the same name, the mount you will climb to get there! So, prepare for some hills today. Cetona retains the characteristic medieval design that consists of small alley ways and little roads that spiral and wind their way to the fortress. This is a must see town and worth the effort! Later you will also visit Sarteano and can take in the unique castle found there! Return to your same hotel in San Casciano Bagni - and maybe a visit to one of the baths?! Dinner on your own. (B)

cycling tuscany bike tourDay 4 | Ride to Sorano and finish in Sovana; Distance 51 km.

Today the ride is more challenging with the crossing of miniscule villages and borgos: Proceno, San Giovanni delle Contee and the ruins of a castle. In Sorano you will find barely more than a handful of ancient homes gathered around the fortress which is partly occupied by the fortezza/fortress: erected in the 16th century by the Orsini Family, the castle is one of the best surviving examples of Tuscan military architecture. As we know, the main function of any fortress is to protect against invaders, because of this we can see for miles from any window across the valley of the Etruscans. Lodging in Sovana at the Sovana hotel resort. Dinner on your own. (B)

One of the town's most interesting attractions are the wonderfully restored synagogue. Continuing on you pass the medival town on Montemerano and then on to Saturnia. Terme di Saturnia is a well known spa of sulphurous waters dating to Roman times. See the hot water falls over whitened rocks that create some natural hot pools.
