The landscape is strong, endless and impressive. The plain defines the territory, a wavy plain that changes its colors each season: in Winter green is dominating, in Springtime a blanket of flowers of different shades transforms the region into a festival of color, in Summer we are struck by the sense of dryness and heat conveyed by the golden that conquers everything; finally, in Autumn the fields are ploughed and sown, and the color brown rules in countless shades of land. And everything starts over again! It is beaches, hills and endless plains. It is cork, olive oil, wine; and a great deal of space left over for simple nature, rosemary and lavender. It is a proud people, a forgotten history; it is discrete creativity, it is the quivering tranquility of life. It is like the magicians top hat delved into all the time: out pop rugs, cowbells, tasty titbits. It holds humor, patience, bonhomie; and so much sagacity that, so well developed, catches lovers and the rash in the mesh of a slumbering philosophy that is not without its risks. It is a subtly knotted web that stretches out and makes it harder to go away. For those who have been here and for those who live here. So much is left behind, so much that has not been tasted. It is a painless yearning; a feeling that brings to each hardy day a secret taste, an inebriating sensation that, quite close by, one can find paradise lost. Lying within the grasp of all, the Alentejo is a closed coffer the key to which lies in ones heart.
Along the way you’ll be staying in three carefully selected Charming Hotels, Alentejo style. They are elegant and rustic in style. Privately owned and restored with love and care these traditional rural houses are renowned locally for their hospitality. They are often family run and always full of warmth, style and charm, and some guests swear that they offer the best home cooking in the world!
As one of the lesser-known places in the south of Europe, the Alentejo coast surprises for its superb scenery and wide range of Mediterranean habitats. Cycling through is the best way to get in touch with nature. Our local partner office is based on the coast in the picturesque town of Vila Nova de Milfontes perched on the banks of the Mira Estuary. Also the Southwest coast of Portugal provides the perfect place for a great family adventure: unspoilt rural landscapes, hospitable locals and people, one of the cleanest rivers in Europe, deserted beaches.

About your new hotel: Set at the end of a track in a tranquil wooded valley on the southwest coast of Portugal, Herdade da Matinha has to offer 8 original rooms in a long, single-floor, whitewashed house, like it's supposed to be around here, with a large porch serving as a corridor.
