What’s Better About a Self‑Guided Bike Tour? Top 5 Reasons It’s the Best Way to Explore by Bike

If you’re researching your next cycling vacation and wondering what’s better about a Self-Guided Bike Tour versus a Guided Bike Tour, you’re not alone. More and more travelers are choosing self‑guided bike tours because they offer freedom, flexibility, and a more authentic connection to the places you ride through — things that guided bike tours just don’t offer in the same way.

This guide breaks down the top 5 reasons a self‑guided bike tour is better than a guided tour, especially for riders who want independence without sacrificing support.

1. You Control the Pace — No Group Schedule, No Pressure

One of the biggest advantages of a self‑guided bike tour is better than a guided tour is the ability to ride exactly how you want. On a guided tour, you’re tied to a group pace, group start times, and group breaks.

On a self‑guided tour, you can:

Start early or sleep in

Stop for photos, wine, coffee, or a swim

Ride faster or slower depending on how you feel

Spend extra time in a village or viewpoint you love

This flexibility is especially valuable in scenic destinations; consider our Portugal bike tours, Spain bike tours, France bike tours, Italy bike tours, Slovenia bike tours, and Croatia bike tours, where every corner offers something worth exploring.

2. More Authentic Travel — Explore Like a Local, Not a Tourist Group

Guided tours often move in a pack, following a fixed schedule. A self‑guided bike tour lets you blend into the local rhythm. You can wander into small cafés, chat with locals, or take detours that aren’t possible with a group.

This style of travel feels more personal and immersive. You’re not just following a guide — you’re discovering the region on your own terms.

3. Better Value — More Affordable Without Sacrificing Support

Self‑guided bike tours typically cost significantly less than guided tours because you’re not paying for a full‑time guide or support vehicle.

Yet you still get:

Pre‑planned routes

Luggage transfers

Navigation tools

Local emergency support

Comfortable accommodations

It’s the perfect balance of independence and convenience — ideal for travelers who want a high‑quality cycling experience without the premium price tag of guided travel.

4. Freedom to Customize Your Experience

On a guided tour, the itinerary is fixed. On a self‑guided bike tour, you can shape your day however you like.

Want to add a winery visit? Explore a UNESCO site for longer? Prefer a leisurely lunch while the weather subsides? Want to skip a museum and ride extra miles?

You can.

This flexibility is especially appealing in regions with rich cultural and culinary experiences — think Tuscany’s vineyards, Provence’s lavender fields, Spain’s tapas towns, or Croatia’s coastal villages.

5. Perfect for Independent Travelers Who Still Want Support

A self‑guided bike tour gives you independence without leaving you on your own. You still have:

24/7 local support

Pre‑tested routes

Digital navigation

Daily luggage transfers

It’s ideal for riders who don’t want to be micromanaged by a guide but still want the reassurance of a well‑organized trip.

You get the adventure of independent travel with the safety net of professional planning.

So, What’s Better About a Self‑Guided Bike Tour?

In short: freedom, flexibility, authenticity, value, and independence — with support when you need it.

For many cyclists, that combination makes a self‑guided bike tour the best way to explore Europe’s most beautiful regions.

Remember back in the day when you would leave right after breakfast to hang out with friends? Not returning home until the street lights came on – preferred method of travel? Your trusty 2 wheeler of course. Driving was out of the question due to that pesky age limit, but besides that, riding your bike meant freedom. Freedom from parents & an escape from rules.

Before the days of helicopter parenting, kids were actually able to get out and experience things without the imposed anxiety of getting hurt, lost, or god forbid – kidnapped. Riding your bike as a young adventurer meant breaking limits with the hidden bonus of some great exercise.

So how do we get back to those days, not just for our kids but for us too? How do we bring back cycling in a way that makes it into our everyday life? A way that makes cycling “normal” again and not just a great way to get fit. We turned back the clock and took inspiration from our early years as riders – before the fancy gear and latest/greatest/lightest bikes. We searched for what made us love cycling in the first place. We narrowed it down to 3 Ways To Make Cycling “Normal” Again.

1) Ditch Your Car

Ok, his sounds a bit extreme, and maybe not entirely practical for your lifestyle. BUT, even if you can’t get rid of your gas guzzler all together, start incorporating your bike in little day-to-day tasks that you would normally hop in your car for. Like going to the corner store, meeting your kids after school, or even the commute to work! Every little bit counts, and slowly you’ll incorporate cycling back into your life and not even realize it!

2) Schedule It

Sounds silly, but with the crazy lives we lead it’s easy to carve out time for exercise and making cycling a normal part of your life again. Just like scheduling a breakfast meeting with a client or your kid’s soccer game – schedule in a ride to clear your head, or get out with the family. Bring back the cycling just for the joy of it!

3) Explore New Places

Part of the magic when cycling as a kid was the ability to take off and explore new places. Now, as adults we rely on our car to get us places, but exploring off the beaten path is how we reconnect with the child in us – bringing us back to the days of coming home at the first flicker of street lights.

So, get out there – reconnect – discover why you fell in love with cycling and bring it back!

We’ve been booking cycling trips through Spain for over 20 years offering 10+ tours, and never get tired of clients reporting back on their adventures travelling the trails, sampling the food and wine and simply soaking in the history and charm felt everywhere in the region.

So, the question has been asked, how do you prepare, and even train for such a rich experience? After all, when embarking on a Pure Adventures Spain cycling tour, you run the risk of suffering from extreme sensory overload. From the vast variety of local wines, incredible food and breath taking scenery – well, it’s all just a bit much to handle.

To help you acclimate to these new surroundings, we have put together a very simple guide on 7 Ways To Train For Spain at home. Follow these carefully and we are confident you’ll have no trouble handling all that is Spain!

1) The Food

Eat delicious food like this at least 2x a day for 3 weeks prior to heading to Spain. For this treatment to be most effective do not skip a meal. Training your taste buds for the food only experienced in Spain, will prevent freak out!

2) The Drink

With so many Spanish wines to choose from, you’ll want to warm up your pallet in preparation for these robust and flavourful creations! We suggest 1/2 a glass of decent Spanish wine daily leading up to your tour!

3) The Scenery

Immerse yourself in some beautiful outdoor surroundings (although they won’t compare to scenic Spain) 1 hour each day for 2 weeks in advance of your Spain tour. This will train each of your senses in taking in the unparalleled beauty that will surround you while cycling through the Spanish country side.

4) The People

Get out and meet new awesome people at least 1x day for a week before departing to Spain. You will meet some of the friendliest people on your travels, so best brush up on your people skills!

5) The Trails

In order to sufficiently prepare for the iconic spanish biking trails, you’ll need to hit the ones close to home extra hard! We suggest biking them at least 2hrs a day to 3 weeks before arriving in Spain. Physical preparedness is key to making the most of what Spain has to offer!

There you have it! Now get training and see you soon!

We all know cycling can make us feel alive – working up a good sweat, feeling the wind, and exploring new routes. But specifically, how does cycling physically and mentally impact us? We scoured the internet and found the reasons why we feel the way we do when we bike!

Stronger Heart

Cycling gives your heart a serious workout. As you move forward in your cycling journey, your heart has to adjust to cycling longer,at higher speeds and tougher routes. Switching your heart’s gears (pun intended) helps the heart get stronger, and if maintained, can greatly reduce the risk of heart disease and lower your resting heart rate. A stronger heart not only benefits you while on the bike, it improves over all energy levels! GET RIDING!

It’s Easy On The Joints.

When you sit on a bike, you put your weight on a pair of bones in the pelvis called the ischial tuberosities, unlike walking, when you put your weight on your legs. These pelvis bones are more equipped to handle the strain, while the leg bones experience more pressure while walking.

Cycling is good for your immune system

Cycling can give your immune system a SUPER boost, and could protect against certain kinds of cancers and general illness. So, kick your next flu bug to the curb and get on a bike!

You’ll Sleep More Deeply

Getting up early for a ride may hurt in the short term, but it’ll help you catch some quality zzzz’s when it’s time to hit the sack. Stanford University School of Medicine researchers asked sedentary insomnia sufferers to cycle for 20-30 minutes every other day. The result? The time required for the insomniacs to fall asleep was reduced by half, and sleep time increased by almost an hour!

Increase Your Brain Power

Looking to become a super genius? Ok, well maybe not, but Researchers from the University of Illinois found that a five percent improvement in cardio-respiratory fitness from cycling led to an improvement of up to 15 percent in mental tests. That’s because cycling helps build new brain cells in the hippocampus – the region responsible for memory, which deteriorates from the age of 30.
“It boosts blood flow and oxygen to the brain, which fires and regenerates receptors, explaining how exercise helps ward off Alzheimer’s,” says the study’s author, Professor Arthur Kramer.

What do you think of when you think cycling? The obvious comes to mind – freedom, fun, exercise, and adventure. But maybe you’re also thinking “CHA CHING!”. Yes, like anything worth the investment, cycling has some initial costs like a good quality bike (of course). But where can you shave off some $$ without losing quality?

We’ve compiled a short list of gear you should have that won’t break the bank!

Flat kit bag

Gotta have this one (and know how to use the goods within). Installed underneath your saddle, this little bag should be stocked with the essentials should you experience a flat tire, including a mini-pump, a tube and tire levers. Check with your local shop to see if it offers seminars on how to change a flat. Because like death and taxes, flat tires are inevitable. Be prepared.

Helmet

No, you don’t need an aero helmet. And you don’t need a $225 one with vented channels and carbon fiber structure. A $75 brain bucket will protect your head just as well as the expensive ones. Just be sure to get it from your local bike shop, which generally carries brands that have passed standardized testing for safety. Bell, Giro and Specialized are among the top names in the category.

Sunglasses

On the bike and run, a basic pair of sport sunglasses, which can start in price at $45, are invaluable. Wind, bugs, raindrops, an errant squirt of energy drink from your bottle are all thwarted by your peeper keepers. (And, oh yeah, they’re great at knocking down sun glare, too.)

Clothing

While it’s possible to spend hundreds on constructing a cycling wardrobe, an outfit of base layer, short-sleeved jersey and bib-shorts, paired with arm and knee warmers, gilet, and lightweight packable rain jacket should see you through. everything else can be added as you go.

Water Bottle & Cage

Happily, not everything in cycling is expensive to begin with, and the outlay required for a humble bottle and cage combo is among the highest ‘bang for buck’ purchases available.

Burgundy is famous for its warm hospitality and inimitable knack for enjoying life. Rich in tradition, gastronomy, history and excellent wines. Even before Julius Caesar fought his decisive battles with the Gauls, people have been lured to this beautiful land of gently rolling landscapes, sleepy villages, rivers and canals. Burgundy is the old France, a land of culture, countryside, fine food and wine. Stately historic castles, miles of straight Roman roads and magnificent Romanesque churches give constant reminders of Burgundy’s heritage.

There really is a long list of reasons to experience Burgundy France, but we’ve selected a few of our faves! Here are our 5 Reasons To Add The Burgundy Gastronomy & Wine Bike Tour To Your Bucket List

The Food (specifically:Coq Au Vin)

We really loved almost every dish we’ve sampled so far in Burgundy, but this one made the top of the list. This Burgundy specialty consists of a free range chicken that is delicately braised and cooked in sauce made from full-bodied red wine. The key to this recipe is the quality of poultry used, which is notable for its tender and tasty meat. The accompanying sauce may contain a variety of different spices and ingredients, from garlic, rosemary, parsley and bay leaves to mushrooms and celery, but no matter what the combination the flavorful result is unforgettable.

Cycling The Vinyards

The vineyards of Burgundy remain among the top destinations for cycling enthusiasts – both for the peace and tranquility, and for the delicious wine.

The Wine…Oh, The Wine!

Burgundy is home to France’s main wine producing areas, and its products are known and enjoyed worldwide. Names like Beaune, Nuits-St-Georges, Chablis, Meursault and Gevrey-Chambertin all hail from this region, where Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes are grown extensively.

The Rich History

Burgundy is Rich with history with it’s many museums & historic buildings. From the Middle Ages to the Renaissance, explore the history of Burgundian buildings. Travel back in time at the medieval site of Guédelon, along the Châteaux tourist route in Saône-et-Loire or in the Palace of the Dukes of Burgundy.

Dijon (not just a great mustard)

Dijon. The capital of Burgundy is more than just the birthplace of the greatest mustard ever, it’s home to parks, fountains, fine museums, and the shopping district along rue de la Libertée. This is a stop in your travels you just cannot miss out on!

Sicily is a beautiful and very varied land, shaped by the myriad invaders and settlers who have all left their mark. Influenced by so many cultures, Sicilian cuisine is surprisingly lavish, while the people are very warm – just like the sunny island itself. Being an island in the Mediterranean Sea, you can expect summertime temperatures be around 72F. To avoid the crowds, we suggest visiting Sicily between March and mid-July and then in the fall. Make the most of your time in sunny Sicily by checking out these festivals.

Sagra di Fava
The humble fava bean has left its mark on the small Sicilian town of Campofiorito. So much so the entire town comes together to celebrate the last harvest of the season every year. Locals dress in traditional Sicilian costumes and make enough food for the whole town. Fava beans are cooked in the traditional manner, with roasted onions and boiled potatoes. Not a bean fan? Don’t worry, there’s plenty of homemade wine. August 2, 2014.

La Festa di Santa Rosalia
Santa Rosalia, the patron saint of Palmero, is celebrated each July with enormous parades, fireworks, music, food and of course, wine. Dating back to the 1600s when the region was suffering from the plague, the festival has evolved to include a theatrical production – complete with acrobatics and light shows – that represent the final days of the plague. A must-see if you are staying in Palmero. July 14, 2014.
