Raindrops glisten on windswept cliffs. Waves crash below ancient headlands. And a couple walks forward, carrying not just their backpacks—but the weight of transformation. This is the essence of The Salt Path, Raynor Winn’s bestselling memoir and now a major motion picture. But it’s also the spirit of Cornwall’s South West Coast Path, a trail that invites you to step into nature’s raw beauty and rediscover what it means to journey.

If the film stirred something in you—or if you’ve long dreamed of walking England’s most iconic coastal trail—our Cornwall: The Salt Path South West Coast Path Hiking Tour is your invitation to follow in Raynor and Moth’s footsteps.

🥾 What Is the South West Coast Path?

Stretching 630 miles from Somerset to Dorset, the South West Coast Path is the UK’s longest National Trail. But the section through Cornwall—where our tour takes place—is arguably the most dramatic. Think:

Crystal-clear waters and harbor charm of Padstow

Quaint seaside villages like Rock, Polzeath, and Mevagissey

Scenic hikes along the South West Coast Path through Trevone, Harlyn Bay, and Constantine Bay

The Lost Gardens of Heligan, a magical botanical experience

Iconic filming locations from period pieces Poldark and Rebecca

Golden sands and coastal views at Polkerris Beach and Stepper Point

Culinary delights, including Rick Stein’s favorite fish and chips

Originally carved by coastguards patrolling for smugglers, the path hugs every curve of the coastline, offering uninterrupted views and a visceral connection to the land.

🎬 Inspired by The Salt Path Film

Raynor Winn’s story of resilience—walking the trail after losing her home and facing her husband’s terminal diagnosis—has captivated readers and now moviegoers. The film, starring Gillian Anderson and Jason Isaacs, showcases the therapeutic power of walking, the healing force of nature, and the quiet strength found in each step.

Our tour lets you experience the same landscapes that shaped their journey: from Padstow’s harbor charm to the wild cliffs near St Ives, and onward to the mystical aura of Land’s End.

🗺️ What to Expect on Our Hiking Tour

This self-guided adventure is designed for walkers who want freedom, flexibility, and unforgettable scenery—without the stress of planning.

Highlights:

6 days / 5 nights of coastal hiking through Cornwall

Daily walks of 7–10 miles, traveling at your own pace

Luggage transfers so you hike light

Hand-picked accommodations in charming inns and guesthouses

Detailed route notes and emergency support

Whether you’re a seasoned hiker or a curious explorer, this tour offers a perfect balance of challenge and comfort.

🌅 Why Walk the Salt Path with Pure Adventures?

We believe walking is more than movement—it’s a way to connect deeply with place, story, and self. Our Cornwall tour is:

Authentic: You’ll walk some of the same path Raynor and Moth did, with time to reflect, recharge, and marvel.

Flexible: Go at your own pace, linger in seaside cafés, or pause for a swim in hidden coves.

Supportive: We handle the logistics so you can focus on the experience.

If The Salt Path moved you, this is your chance to live it. Let the cliffs, the sea, and the rhythm of walking guide you toward something unforgettable.

Packing Tips for a Self-Guided Hiking Tour in Europe

Embarking on a self-guided hiking tour in Europe is a thrilling way to explore scenic landscapes and immerse yourself in the continent’s natural beauty. With the freedom and flexibility that come with self-guided adventures, packing thoughtfully becomes essential. Here’s a helpful guide to ensure you’re well-prepared for your hiking tour.

Hiking Gear Essentials

Your gear is the backbone of a successful hiking trip. Start with a durable pair of broken-in hiking boots that offer ample support and grip. Pair them with moisture-wicking socks to prevent blisters. Comfortable, quick-dry hiking pants and a breathable, lightweight shirt are must-haves, along with a waterproof jacket to handle Europe’s unpredictable weather. Don’t forget to pack a sturdy backpack with a hydration system or water bottle, and trekking poles for challenging terrains.

Layers for All Seasons

Europe’s hiking trails can take you through varying altitudes and climates, so it’s vital to layer strategically. Base layers in moisture-wicking materials keep you dry, while mid-layers like fleece or insulated jackets provide warmth when temperatures drop. A lightweight packable down jacket is a great option for cooler evenings, and a sun hat or cap will shield you from the sun during daytime hikes. Consider clothing that can go from day to night, such as lightweight wool shirts in darker colors or grays.

Essential Accessories

On a self-guided hiking tour, accessories can make all the difference. Bring a reliable map, compass, or GPS device to stay on track, even if trails are well-marked. A small first-aid kit is indispensable, including band-aids, antiseptic, and any medications you may need. Sunglasses, sunscreen, and lip balm are essentials for sun protection, while lightweight gloves and a buff or scarf can come in handy for colder mornings. A headlamp or flashlight ensures visibility in case your hike extends into the evening.

Packing Light and Smart

Efficient packing is key for self-guided hiking tours. Stick to lightweight, multi-purpose clothing to reduce bulk. Pack toiletries in travel-sized containers, and include biodegradable soap and a microfiber towel. If your tour includes overnight stays at huts or lodges, a lightweight sleeping bag liner may be useful. Packing cubes can help organize your items, and zip-lock bags are perfect for storing wet or dirty gear. Check out our complete self-guided bike tour packing guide here!

Tips for European Hikers

Many of Europe’s trails pass through picturesque villages, making it easy to restock essentials or enjoy local food. Carry some cash in the local currency, as smaller establishments may not accept cards. Familiarize yourself with trail etiquette, such as yielding to uphill hikers and staying on marked paths to protect the environment.

These elusive fungi, buried beneath the soil in select European regions, are a gastronomic delight. They’re prized for their unique aroma and flavor, transforming ordinary dishes into extraordinary culinary experiences. But where can you find the best truffle spots in Europe? And how do you navigate the intricacies of truffle seasons or the art of finding and eating these gourmet treasures?

This guide will take you on a journey through Europe’s truffle-rich landscapes. From the fragrant truffle grounds of Italy and France to the lesser-known truffle havens, we’ll uncover the continent’s best truffle spots. So, whether you’re a seasoned foodie, an aspiring mycologist, or simply curious about this fascinating world, let’s embark on this truffle adventure together.

The Allure of European Truffles

Truffles have a certain mystique that sets them apart from other ingredients. They’re not just a food, but a symbol of luxury and indulgence.

Their unique aroma and flavor, coupled with their scarcity, make them a sought-after delicacy. The thrill of the hunt, the anticipation of the find, and the joy of tasting a freshly unearthed truffle – it’s an experience like no other.

Truffle Varieties and Seasons

Europe is home to several types of truffles, each with its unique characteristics. The most prized are the black Périgord from France and the white Alba from Italy. The black Périgord truffle, known for its intense aroma and complex flavor, is at its best from December to February. The white Alba truffle, famous for its delicate taste and intoxicating scent, shines from October to December.

Truffle seasons vary across Europe, influenced by factors such as climate and soil composition. Here’s a quick guide:

Black Périgord (France): December – February

White Alba (Italy): October – December

Many of you have probably never heard of the Roaring Fork Valley. To be honest, until I moved here 12 years ago, neither had I. I can remember the exact moment I arrived in the valley. I’d been living in Denver and was familiar with the many nearby ski areas such as Breck, Vail, A-Basin, etc.; these are all located off of the beast of a highway known as I-70. When I turned off that highway and started winding my way up towards Aspen, it was then that I had a real Aha moment. So these are the mountains, I thought to myself. I was in complete awe; I may have even been drooling. I watched the sparkling Roaring Fork River as it followed me through canyons and valleys until I finally arrived at the small town of Aspen. It was June 21, 2008, and summer was in full swing. Everything was bright green, with rainbow-colored wildflowers blooming everywhere I looked, snow-capped mountains greeting me in the distance, and all of this was set against the perfect backdrop of a typical Colorado “bluebird sky.”

Twelve years later and I’m still here. I’ll admit, I’m completely hooked. We have a saying here: “You come for the winters but you stay for the summers.” This couldn’t be more spot on. The activities are endless, and I’ve grown to love them all. Hiking and mountain biking on miles of trails, road biking, the Rio Grande bike path, kayaking, SUP’ing, whitewater rafting, rock climbing, camping, wildflowers, golden fall leaves, fly fishing, diverse wildlife – bear, moose & elk, free Snowmass concerts, rodeos, culture & arts…it’s endless! Not to mention, the weather in summer is perfectly divine. Imagine summer temperatures where the hottest day is 88 degrees, but most days you’re sitting in the low to mid-80’s. Evening temperatures are typically in the 50’s and 60’s. The air is dry, not humid, so you won’t find mosquitoes up here. And by up, I mean the fact that we sit at an altitude: of 8,000+ ft. For those of you looking to do a little high-altitude cycling training, you’ve come to the right place. There’s a reason that Lance Armstrong and so many other athletes choose to make this place their home.

And sure, Aspen is known for its celebrities, glam, and swankiness, but that’s not what this area really is. For us locals, it’s the Roaring Fork Valley. It’s two perfect playgrounds consisting of two adjacent villages: Aspen and Snowmass Village. Here, you have access to nature at its finest, located conveniently outside your doorstep. Here, the evening skies sparkle with stars that only when you leave the valley, do you take for granted. Here, nature offers you everything.

So as I share this with you, things are slowly beginning to open and COVID-19 restrictions are being lifted. I would like to personally invite you to escape to the Roaring Fork Valley this summer/fall. Take a look at our Aspen Snowmass self-guided bike tour, family-friendly multi-sport tour, hut to hut hiking tour, or even a guided bike tour. Summer through fall is the perfect time to be out here. With the most amazing resources at hand and our local expertise, we can design the perfect Aspen Snowmass getaway for you. Getting away this summer or fall might still seem like a dream but maybe, just maybe, it can become a reality. Let us hope!

April 23, 2020: SELF GUIDED IS THE SOLUTION!

Self-guided travel after covid: Today we received a bit of good news and confirmation, in an e-newsletter from our industry peers at the Travel & Adventure Show group. This indicated that self guided travel will be the most sought after type of travel when people return to travel in the post COVID-19 era. As we have specialized and focused on self guided bike tours and self guided hiking tours for over 25 years, that is great news for us! And it makes sense, of course. When you think about the exact opposite of self-guided travel, it is something like a cruise ship, which has come to symbolize virus and transmission of illnesses. While small group travel also shows to be appealing to some, we know that any type of travel will be some time in coming.

From a survey by the Travel & Adventure Show group:

1700 people who have attended these shows and are identified as “Travel Enthusiasts”; Over Half will Still Travel in 2020

Over 56% stated they would not make changes to their current travel plans for 2020 (24.7%) or are re-booking for later in 2020 (31.5%).

In reference to what types of travel options will they be looking for in the future, approximately 60% are planning on both self-managed international and domestic vacations.

The hard to read text is:

Small Group International

Small Group Domestic

Self Managed Domestic

Self Managed International

Cruise

Other

The gold/yellow (3rd) and turquoise/aqua (4th) colored bars are showing interest in self guided travel. As it is called here, ‘self managed’, we take it to mean the same as self guided travel. This is a huge jump in a way of traveling that was virtually unknown when we first started selling self guided bike tours in the late 90’s. If you are not familiar with self guided travel, have a look at that link which describes it in detail. But in brief, a self guided trip is kind what it sounds like – travel without a guide. You are the pseudo guide and you manage your day to day itinerary. This is about the only common denominator because after that, you can find all kinds of self guided offers, which vary greatly from one another.

Pure Adventures has been offering upscale and customizable self guided adventures as hallmark and with a unique market position for 20 years. We know better than anyone how this works. But important to note, there are many more stripped down versions out there, where few services are included, thus bringing down the price. In turn, this increases the amount of work that the traveler must manage. Regardless, more people will come to experience self guided in the new travel environment and this is good not just for us tour specialists but also, for many others.

New destinations where there are fewer crowds will be sought after, which will bring more awareness of many amazing travel-worthy destinations. Money will flow into these lesser known destinations and create new micro economic opportunities. Self guided travel puts travelers in direct contact with local people – typically a good thing in normal times, as travel is meant to create learning, understanding, and culture exchange. Self guided travel is less expensive, leaving room for possibly more trips or more spending in destination, or both. Self guided travel also levels the playing field for local services and outfitters, to supply travelers with experiences that they find on their own.

As all self guided adventures are not created equal or meant to be the same, it is important for a traveler to ask questions, compare what is included, and evaluate the service provider. Do you want to do it all yourself? If so, you can and just make arrangements directly with in destination services. If you want some help but wish to retain certain things for your own effort, there are companies who sell slimmer versions of a trip for more DIY travel. Lastly, there are all inclusive self guided trips, where you can leave all of the logistics of organization up to the tour company. Then, all you have to do is show up and enjoy your time as you like each day, just you and your traveling party, the people you know.

Self guided travel typically keeps you in your own private party – alone, as a couple, as a family, or as a small group of friends – always the people you know. This level of limited exposure is what is attracting people most to self guided, as they think about travel in the post COVID-19 era. We are ready and waiting, and we hope the be a leader in helping people return to travel when they are ready!

Is it too soon? Here, at my desk in my home office, I hear the landscapers at the neighboring homes running leaf blowers and chain saws, and I hear the construction of home improvements in the neighborhood. I see the delivery vans going by. In a way, it seems that some things haven’t changed. But, here in the business of travel, much has changed, and we know that as of this writing we have a long way to go still.

Here is what we are wondering:

Will the cruise industry and smaller versions of cruising come back?

Will group travel be interesting or will the idea of being in close quarters with people you don’t know be an undesirable experience?

How about airplanes and hotels, or any kind of small lodging experience?

We are thinking that everyone who is cooped up at home and without financial stress, will want to return to some form of travel experiences as soon as possible. But, what we expect is that many travelers will take to short haul destinations and limit exposure in airplanes, boats, and many other group environments. International travel may take a little longer to come back. This is only a perception at this point, but it is based on customer comments and on travel industry commentary and surveys. Frankly, the media will drive perception of risk in travel, and as tourism is so important to so many economies, we can be sure to see some propaganda.

Here is the result of a survey shared with us from the Adventure Travel Shows: “More than 60% of travelers said they haven’t yet adjusted their summer vacation plans due to the COVID-19 outbreak. As for the milestone that would trigger them to travel again, nearly half stated a decline in COVID-19 cases or a lifting of shelter in place order. Only 9% would wait for a vaccine for COVID-19 to travel again.” This is fairly close to our observations as well. So much can change however.

We have been in touch with our local partners in hard-hit destinations like Italy, and we are hearing about new procedures for hotel cleaning and the overall hotel experience. Examples include having breakfast in your room (instead of a buffet style dining room), limited front desk access (1 customer at a time), and front desks with protective glass between the staff and customers. If this is the way forward and the new hotel/lodging experience is going to be like this, I think the travel experience is going to change somewhat.

We at Pure Adventures have always been focused on Self Guided Adventures and Private Guided Adventures. As such, we think we are well positioned for the return to travel when it comes. We expect and are preparing for more private experiences. Anyone not interested in being in a group setting with strangers but eager to travel, should find comfort in our formula. Saying that, it is important to add that while not being with a group of strangers on a fixed agenda is great, it would be a shame not to mix and interact with locals wherever you go. Travel is for us, about experiencing the destination which includes the culture, traditions, and the people. Visiting sites is great, but meeting locals is wonderful, too.

Do you have thoughts about this, how will you go back to traveling?

Here are some articles that have been shared with us:

April 23, 2020 – some new information shared with us today by the Travel & Adventure Show group

From a survey of 1700 people who have attended these shows and are identified as “Travel Enthusiasts”; Over Half will Still Travel in 2020

over 56% stated they would not make changes to their current travel plans for 2020 (24.7%) or are re-booking for later in 2020 (31.5%).

In reference to what types of travel options will they be looking for in the future, approximately 60% are planning on both self-managed international and domestic vacations.

If you’re a bit of an Anglophile, you’re probably prepared for the most common UK terms that cause confusion to the North American speaker – across the pond chips are crisps, an aubergine is an eggplant, and pants are underwear. Many of the differences are small, charming, and create a real sense of place for the unaccustomed ear. A less well-known usage a traveler would do well to understand, however, is the difference between the North American and British usages of “walking” vs. “hiking.”

In North America, we tend to use “walk” in the same way we’d use “stroll” – a relatively easy excursion, usually along paved roads. We reserve the term “hike” for a more challenging trek through rugged terrain. The UK and the Republic of Ireland, however, use “walk” to describe any trip on foot, whether it’s to the corner shop or up the mountainside. Particularly if you’re talking to an older person, you may also hear the terms hillwalking, rambling, or fellwalking. When you get a hot tip at the pub about a lovely walk nearby, don’t set out in sandals until you’ve asked a few followup questions about length, difficulty, etc.

For instance, the tallest of the Connemara Mountains in Ireland, which we pass through on our Hiking the Western Way tour, reaches a maximum elevation of nearly 2,400 feet. Local guides may refer to the climb as a walk, or at most a “hard walk” or “hill walk.” All the same you’ll definitely want to bring hiking boots. Even less challenging stretches of trail may require appropriate preparations and footwear if the distances warrant. Especially at higher elevations, sunny weather can turn windy or misty on fairly short notice.

So how best to prepare for a day or more of walking, Irish or UK style? Hiking boots as opposed to shoes will give you the best ankle support and be suitable for the broadest range of conditions. If you don’t intend to carry a ton of gear, though, you won’t need the stiffest, heaviest variety available, backpacking boots. Some hikers even prefer lightweight, low-cut trail runners for the comfort and speed they offer. Either way a good fit is very important, so when shopping around make sure you try your intended pair on at the end of the day after your feet have had time to swell, and while you’re wearing the type of sock you intend to bring with you. Avoid choosing a pair so tight they chafe, as you should still have room to wiggle your toes. Speaking of socks, those need to fit well too in order to avoid blistering. Choose a thickness appropriate for the season – thick enough to give you some comfy cushioning, but not so thick as to be sweltering on a warm day. Merino wool is the go-to material for most hikers, sometimes blended with synthetics for durability and faster drying.

The standard outdoorsperson advice also applies to hiking in the UK, of course. Layering a t-shirt, fleece top, and jacket allows you to peel off as you warm up or stay toasty when the weather turns. A brimmed hat and sunscreen will probably leave you feeling less fatigued at the end of the day, and a spare pair of socks never hurt. Snacks, water, and a fully charged phone are reassuring additions to any pack. Just be aware that cell reception can be spotty on some stretches of trail, so it’s always best practice to download map data in advance or bring a good old-fashioned paper map along.

Lastly, if you’re referring to any guides written on hiking in the UK, you may want to make sure you’ve read them over in advance to make sure you haven’t glossed over any more unfamiliar terms (i.e. do you know a moor when you see one? Did you know a “permissive path” is a trail on private property which the landowner has granted access to?). If you travel with Pure Adventures, our local guides will bring you up to speed on anything you might need to know about trails or points of interest. Your job is to relax, enjoy the pastoral countryside and sweeping landscape, and then put your feet up after a long day’s ramble up hill and down dale.

If you asked anyone here at Pure Adventures how we’ve maintained (and grown) over the past 20+ years, you will probably get three very similar answers – if not the exact same answers. We do it for 1) the love of travel 2) the love of the activities we provide 3) the love of our clients. But our clients, hands down, always come out on top of why we’ve been so successful. They get hooked on our trips! We’ve learned a few things along the way how to make each tour we offer, better and better year over year. From lodgings & trails, to new food and wine experiences. Forming lasting friendships with our traveler is just the best!

Anyone who know us well, knows that cycling has always been our first love. But hiking is so unique because it can take you places a bike, well, just physically can’t. Often times our hiking tours will take us places few people have actually ever seen. Imagine – setting foot in an area not many (if any humans) have touched. You form relationships with other travelers based on these unique experiences, and create lasting memories.

With 20 years of adventure travel experience in our back pocket, we often field questions via social media on various aspects of what it’s actually like to hike, walk and ride all over the world. From people who have never set foot in a different country to seasoned travelers who venture off the beaten path a few times a year. From these questions we realized there is a demand for hiking knowledge – so recently we went to work and put together “Pure Adventures Hiking Tips”. A marriage of our own knowledge with great tips from top hiking influencers.

We have thrown a few pages from the guide here, but you don’t want to miss downloading the whole thing right here!

Traveling without an entourage is one of the most popular ways to see the world these days. Here are five reasons why you should consider going it alone.

One may be the loneliest number, but when it comes to myriad social experiences in today’s society – globetrotting among them – a party of one often makes sense. Whether you’re single, in a relationship, introverted or extroverted, here are six good reasons to go self-guided on your next vacation.

Scheduling is Infinitely Easier

Quite possibly the biggest incentive for forgoing traveling with companions, having the freedom to choose exactly when, where, and how you prefer to get to and explore a destination is considerably less complicated when there’s just one person’s schedule and interests to consider.

Last-Minute is Often Less of an Issue

Snagging a single ticket for a tour, flight, room or bus ticket is often easier – and more affordable – when there’s just you to think about. Not only are you more likely to be flexible on schedule dates and times, tickets/tours/accommodations providers are also more likely to have single tickets/tours/rooms available to suit. Pure Adventures self guided trips are available to start on just about any date in most cases! Avoiding peak seasons is almost always easy to get your dates.

You Can Change Plans Without Issue

In many situations when traveling with a group, a change of plans can be rife with potential for financial, interpersonal or other related concerns. Conversely, when experiencing a new destination on your own, making a decision to change your day/trip is as simple as making it and moving on.

You Can Better Live in the Moment

By definition, traveling with others is distracting: You’re listening to them, watching them, and thinking about them. When visiting a destination without companions, you’re better able to authentically experience and focus on your surroundings, taking in the sights, sounds, smells you may not have noticed otherwise. The upside to going solo is meeting so many new people where you visit. On a solo self-guided trip you will meet locals of all types and rely on your own wishes, skills, and intuition as you go along. Choose the kind of food you want, the pace at which you want to move, and the locals you wish to engage or need to engage for information.

Another benefit to self-guided travel? More than ever before, tour providers are offering focused, budget friendly trips that hone in on your specific interests, planning itineraries that perfectly suit your needs while offering travelers freedom, flexibility, support and independence. Case in point: Our Self-Guided Cycling Tours, which features high quality lodging, pre- and post-trip planning, a meticulously planned route, access to 24-hour support and emergency services. Is there a downside to solo travel – guided or self guided? You will pay a little more. Single and solo supplements are common, so you will have to bare a few more costs when you are sharing space and services with others; but the freedom you gain could be so worth it! The Pure Adventures way is more service and support oriented than other self guided offers. While you still would be solo, you have a safety net in the form of local help and you begin by meeting on your first day. We are always a phone call away.

You’ll Feel an Incredible Sense of Achievement

Whether you’re a newbie traveler or an experienced jetsetter, knowing that you’re able to not only customize each step of your trip, but also ensure that you’re where you need to be – and are also able to deal with and overcome inevitable hiccups that arise throughout most trips – provides an amazing sense of accomplishment.

It Gives You the Opportunity to Reflect

Venturing out into the world on your own means, at some point, you’re likely going to look inward and dig deep regarding where your priorities lie, what brought you to this point in your life, and how you want to spend your time now and in the future. Take the opportunity to listen to your thoughts, enjoy the destination, and embrace a bit of this little-felt introspection!
