Granada, Spain needs to be next on your travel list: Nestled at the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains in southern Spain, Granada is a city that captures the heart and imagination of all who visit. A crossroads of cultures, Granada boasts a rich history, stunning architecture, and an undeniable vibrancy that makes it a must-visit destination.

A Tapestry of Cultures

Granada’s history is a blend of influences, from its Islamic roots to its Christian Renaissance transformation. The Cathedral of Granada, a stunning example of Spanish Renaissance architecture, and the adjoining Royal Chapel, where Catholic monarchs Ferdinand and Isabella are buried, offer a glimpse into the city’s layered past. Take a stroll through the Albaicín district, a labyrinth of narrow, cobblestone streets that preserve Granada’s Moorish essence, and enjoy stunning views of the Alhambra from the Mirador de San Nicolás.

The Alhambra: A Jewel of Islamic Architecture

Granada’s crown jewel is undoubtedly the Alhambra, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most exquisite examples of Islamic architecture in the world. This sprawling palace and fortress complex, originally built by the Nasrid dynasty, is a masterpiece of intricate mosaics, lush gardens, and breathtaking views of the city below. Wander through the Generalife gardens or lose yourself in the ornate halls of the Nasrid Palaces—each corner of the Alhambra tells a story of Granada’s Moorish past.

The gardens of the Alhambra Palace, known as the Generalife, are a true oasis of tranquility and beauty, nestled against the backdrop of the Sierra Nevada mountains. These exquisite gardens were designed as a retreat for the Nasrid sultans, offering a serene escape from the world. Filled with lush greenery, vibrant flowers, and carefully manicured hedges, the gardens are a masterpiece of Moorish landscaping, where nature and art intertwine seamlessly. Trickling fountains and reflective pools add a soothing harmony, while shaded walkways provide a cool respite under the Andalusian sun. As you wander through the terraces, you’ll be greeted by panoramic views of Granada below, creating a dreamlike ambiance that captivates the senses. The Generalife Gardens are more than a feast for the eyes—they are a living testament to the artistry and ingenuity of the Moorish era, evoking a sense of timeless enchantment.

Planning your visit to the Alhambra Palace in advance is essential, as it is one of Spain’s most popular attractions and tickets often sell out quickly. It’s recommended to book your tickets at least 3+ months in advance, especially during peak travel seasons. You can choose from various ticket options, including general admission, garden-only tickets, and guided tours, which provide in-depth insights into the history and architecture of the site. For a unique experience, consider a night tour of the Nasrid Palaces or the Generalife Gardens. Tickets can be purchased through the official Alhambra website or authorized vendors, ensuring a smooth and secure booking process. Be sure to select a specific time slot for the Nasrid Palaces, as entry is strictly regulated. With careful planning, your visit to this UNESCO World Heritage site will be a seamless and unforgettable journey into history.

The Flamenco Spirit

Granada is a vibrant center for flamenco, the captivating dance and music that embodies the spirit of Andalusia. To truly immerse yourself in this cultural treasure, venture to the Sacromonte neighborhood, renowned for its iconic cave houses carved into the hills. Here, you can witness an unforgettable flamenco performance in an intimate, atmospheric setting, where the rhythms of the guitar, the soulful vocals, and the mesmerizing movements of the dancers come alive. The raw emotion, fiery passion, and masterful artistry of flamenco will stir your soul and leave you utterly spellbound, offering a glimpse into the heart of Andalusian culture

Culinary Delights

No trip to Granada is complete without immersing yourself in its vibrant culinary scene. The city is famed for its lively tapas culture, where small, flavorful dishes are often served complimentary with drinks in countless bars. Treat yourself to local delicacies such as jamón serrano, perfectly cured and bursting with flavor, or savor the smooth, nutty richness of manchego cheese, a Spanish classic. Cool down with a refreshing bowl of gazpacho, Andalusia’s iconic chilled soup, and indulge in pestiños, a honey-glazed pastry with a delightful crunch. Be sure to save room for piononos, a decadent local dessert with a rich, custard-like filling and caramelized topping, providing the perfect finale to your gastronomic adventure. Granada’s culinary traditions promise to tantalize your taste buds and leave you craving more!

Updated 11/22/2021: Pure Adventures is following health and safety guidelines specifically created for the adventure tourism industry, provided by the Adventure Travel Trade Association, and created in collaboration with Cleveland Clinic. More information is available from the ATTA.

Due to recent changes impacting the travel industry, we would like to address some new guidelines (below) for our customers in regard to bike tours, trekking/hiking tours, and general travel suggestions.

The tour business has historically been the domain of group guided tours; self-guided tours really only took off in the last 10-15 years. Still, most of the tour options available to consumers are the guided groups where individuals or couples sign up for a fixed departure and set off with a group of friends and a guide. This model has a lot of new work to do to manage virus safety. New guidelines issued by the ATTA were developed with the help of some of the biggest and best-financed adventure operators. They are well done but are most relevant to guided group trips.

That being said, most of that is not applicable to our model of self-guided and private guided bike tours. Pure Adventures, in combination with our local partners, are working to do our part and select the best vendors who are also doing their part to make the safest, best experience for our travelers as they return to exploring the world. Our hotel partners are following their specific guidelines, as restaurants are theirs. Our taxi transfer providers and drivers also have their own ‘industry guidelines,’ including the number of people per vehicle and protective glass between the front/rear cab area. Here are some other initiatives we are putting in place:

1. Orientations and Equipment Fittings: These will be done in a socially distanced way, with all parties wearing face masks (including guests). Helmets, bike bags, and bikes are cleaned and disinfected between uses. You may wish to bring your own helmet and bike bag for more assurance, but note that we always require a helmet to be worn while riding. More telephone and/or zoom orientations will be available.

2. Luggage Transfers: Drivers will use hand sanitizer before and after handling customer luggage.

3. More Electronic Data: More and more, navigation is moving to an electronic format, along with cue sheets and suggestions for visiting, exploring, etc. Less paper is good in every way.

4. Travel with a Face Mask: We require travelers to have them on their person at all times but not while riding/hiking/paddling unless you choose to do so.

5. Communication Support: In case you start to feel sick during your trip you will have local support. This includes advising about contact tracing apps that may be required in the area you are traveling.

6. Off the Beaten Path: We are choosing less busy routes, trails, and villages, whenever possible.

Many of you have probably never heard of the Roaring Fork Valley. To be honest, until I moved here 12 years ago, neither had I. I can remember the exact moment I arrived in the valley. I’d been living in Denver and was familiar with the many nearby ski areas such as Breck, Vail, A-Basin, etc.; these are all located off of the beast of a highway known as I-70. When I turned off that highway and started winding my way up towards Aspen, it was then that I had a real Aha moment. So these are the mountains, I thought to myself. I was in complete awe; I may have even been drooling. I watched the sparkling Roaring Fork River as it followed me through canyons and valleys until I finally arrived at the small town of Aspen. It was June 21, 2008, and summer was in full swing. Everything was bright green, with rainbow-colored wildflowers blooming everywhere I looked, snow-capped mountains greeting me in the distance, and all of this was set against the perfect backdrop of a typical Colorado “bluebird sky.”

Twelve years later and I’m still here. I’ll admit, I’m completely hooked. We have a saying here: “You come for the winters but you stay for the summers.” This couldn’t be more spot on. The activities are endless, and I’ve grown to love them all. Hiking and mountain biking on miles of trails, road biking, the Rio Grande bike path, kayaking, SUP’ing, whitewater rafting, rock climbing, camping, wildflowers, golden fall leaves, fly fishing, diverse wildlife – bear, moose & elk, free Snowmass concerts, rodeos, culture & arts…it’s endless! Not to mention, the weather in summer is perfectly divine. Imagine summer temperatures where the hottest day is 88 degrees, but most days you’re sitting in the low to mid-80’s. Evening temperatures are typically in the 50’s and 60’s. The air is dry, not humid, so you won’t find mosquitoes up here. And by up, I mean the fact that we sit at an altitude: of 8,000+ ft. For those of you looking to do a little high-altitude cycling training, you’ve come to the right place. There’s a reason that Lance Armstrong and so many other athletes choose to make this place their home.

And sure, Aspen is known for its celebrities, glam, and swankiness, but that’s not what this area really is. For us locals, it’s the Roaring Fork Valley. It’s two perfect playgrounds consisting of two adjacent villages: Aspen and Snowmass Village. Here, you have access to nature at its finest, located conveniently outside your doorstep. Here, the evening skies sparkle with stars that only when you leave the valley, do you take for granted. Here, nature offers you everything.

So as I share this with you, things are slowly beginning to open and COVID-19 restrictions are being lifted. I would like to personally invite you to escape to the Roaring Fork Valley this summer/fall. Take a look at our Aspen Snowmass self-guided bike tour, family-friendly multi-sport tour, hut to hut hiking tour, or even a guided bike tour. Summer through fall is the perfect time to be out here.

If you’re new to wine Tasting or need a refresher, click here to read our “Wine Tasting 101” post.

Winemaking is woven into the culture of many of the countries we visit with Pure Adventures. If you’re a wine lover on a self-guided tour, you might drop in on favourite vineyard to see how the grapes are grown and the wine is made. Along the way you may discover a unique local producer you’ve never heard of, or take advantage of a tasting day to explore the nuances of the terroir. A little advance research can help you identify must-trys along your route, so we’ve compiled a list of regionally famous wine varietals to keep an eye out for next time you find yourself in wine country.

Germany – Riesling

Riesling is Germany’s signature varietal — the first recorded reference to Riesling comes from the 15th century, when it became the drink of choice for German nobility. Today it accounts for nearly a quarter of the nation’s total wine production. Rieslings are typically low in alcohol, high in acidity, and prized for their refreshing crispness. Somewhat unusually for a white wine, they can age well. Older Rieslings develop a signature petroleum smell, which might sound unappetizing but is natural and prized as part of the grape’s unique profile. They range from sweet to bone-dry depending on the terroir. Because of the local climate, German Rieslings tend towards the dry side. They pair particularly well with spicy food because the acidity has a way of cleansing the palate. See this post by Wine Folly to learn more about Riesling varieties.

Austria – Grüner Veltliner

Austria’s favorite grape is Grüner Veltliner, or Grüner for short. This wonderful white is often considered one the world’s best “food wines.” Again thanks to its high acidity it can hold its own even against red meat or a spicy plate of Vietnamese. The availability of plentiful, affordable Grüner is part of the charm, but the varietal has the sophistication to improve with age. “Reserve” Grüners exhibit a deeper hue and a peppery flavour.

The terraced vineyards along the Danube are fairytale-pretty and make the ideal backdrop for a tasting. While you’re in Austria, consider trying the classic Grüner and weiner schnitzel combination. Vegetarians, on the other hand, will appreciate how well this one pairs with bitter veg like asparagus.

Argentina – Malbec & Torrontés

Malbec originated in France, but grew poorly in the French climate. The vine much preferred Argentina’s hot climate and high elevation, and quickly grew in popularity once it was planted there. It is rich and full-bodied, with flavours of dark fruits like cherry and blackberry. Malbec is excellent served on its own, and pairs well with smoky or earthy flavours. Try it with lean red meat or with mushrooms, or a pungent blue cheese. At a local tasting, you’ll notice the mountainous vistas of Salta are a good match with dramatic, bold flavours as well.

If you prefer white to red, Torrontés is among the famous wine varietals well worth trying. Of the three varieties — Torrontés Riojano, Sanjuanino, and Mendocino — Riojano is the popular favourite. Notable for its moderate acidity and light peach flavour, Torrontés also benefits from Argentina’s warm, dry climate and high elevation. It is usually drunk young, and carries refreshing floral and herbal notes. Torrontés pairs well with spicy Indian food, but while you’re in Salta try pairing it with empanada salteñas.

Portugal – Port & Vinho Verde

Port derives its name from the city of Porto, the second largest city in Portugal. The grapes are produced in nearby Duoro Valley, home to some unbelievably picturesque vineyards. Looking out across the Duoro River as it winds out to sea between sunny hillsides is guaranteed to enhance the tasting experience.

Port is a fortified wine, meaning the addition of brandy to wine stops fermentation before it is complete. This method preserves residual sugar for a sweeter flavour. Typically full-bodied and plummy, ports can serve as either aperitif or digestif. There are several varieties to try, including ruby and tawny port. The former is younger and retains more fruity characteristics, while the later is aged in small wooden barrels for a nuttier taste and a darker colour. Both are blended to maintain a balanced profile. More expensive vintage ports are blended, oaked, then bottle-aged for years to attain their peak complexity. Try serving a glass with blue cheese to round out a special meal.

If you’re looking for something a bit fresher, consider a glass of vinho verde. Literally “green wine,” the colour here refers to age, not grape variety. These wines are fresh and summery with a slight effervescence. Serve with seafood or other light, citrusy dishes. If you’re enjoying a glass after the end of a long day biking, the low alcohol content won’t send you off to bed too early.

Hungary – Tokaji Aszú

Hungary’s Tokaji aszú is considered one of the great dessert wines of the world. Even if you typically avoid sweet wines, this one deserves to be on your list. Aszú has a long history of being celebrated in royal courts across Europe. The production of aszú relies on noble rot, a type of mold that develops in moist conditions. When affected grapes dry out they shrivel, concentrating their flavours and sugars. They are then added in careful proportion to a base must, giving the wine its unique qualities. The high sweetness means aszú ages very well indeed — bottles can last over a century. Even a glass of more recent vintage will show rich flavours of apricot, honey, cinnamon and ginger. Aszú is delightful on its own, perhaps as a holiday digestif, or as part of classic pairing with foie gras, chocolate, or cheese.

—

At eight famous wine varietals across five countries, we’ve barely scratched the surface. There’s certainly enough here to kickstart a wonderful tasting adventure, but a list is no substitute for on-the-ground experience. Start planning your next custom trip and discover some new and vibrant flavours on your own.

Wine is an important part of the culture of many of our destinations: France, Portugal, Spain, Italy, Chile and Argentina all offer vineyards of international distinction. If you’re tempted to stop off on your next custom tour but don’t know where to begin, take heart! You don’t have to be a trained sommelier to thoroughly enjoy your next wine tasting. A sense of curiosity is more important than a schooled palate, but knowing a few basic principles in advance can help you get the most out of the experience.

For wine tasting newcomers, the complexity and sophistication of the subject can seem intimidating. Remember you’re not expected to know everything coming in. Staffers are there to answer your questions, and learning about the unique characteristics of their product is half the fun. Let them bring you into the fold.

If you’re planning to stop at a winery as part of a self-guided trip, pay attention to tasting order. As a general rule you should always taste from lightest to heaviest. A red with lots of tannins will obscure the flavour of a delicate white. Same goes for food pairings. Taking the food pairing recommendations is best, but if bringing your own food is an option don’t choose bold flavours that will obscure the featured item. A delicate pinot noir that tastes exquisite on its own may taste anemic served alongside a hearty steak. Also, don’t forget that habits like coffee drinking or wearing a strong scent could confuse your palate.

If you’re pouring for yourself, don’t fill a glass more than one-third full. Any more than that and you won’t be able to swirl the glass effectively, which aerates the wine and releases its full aroma. Technique isn’t terribly important — you can even keep the base of the glass on the table and move it in circles for a few seconds. Don’t swirl until your arm goes numb but don’t worry about overdoing it either, because a wine needs to sit out for a day or two to become over-oxygenated. While you’re swirling, notice the way wine leaves stripes or “tears” down the side of the glass. If you’ve ever heard someone say a wine has legs, this is what they mean. Thick, slow tears indicate a higher sugar and alcohol content, but don’t read too deeply into it — tears are no indication of overall quality.

Next, hold the glass to the light and tilt it. If you have a white background, even better. You’re looking for details like clarity, colour, and viscosity. As you might’ve guessed, a more opaque wine indicates a fuller body than a highly translucent wine. A slight haze is fine, but cloudiness is usually a bad sign. Also notice the way the colour grades at the edges. If it thins out drastically, the flavour might be on the weak side. A wine that shows significant browning is likely of an older vintage, unless it has simply oxidized. The details differ widely across varietals, so again don’t be afraid to ask questions.

You’re past the preamble now – time to sample the aroma. Hover your nose over the glass and take a few whiffs. The easiest scents to identify are fruity, followed by floral, herbal, or earthy notes. You might also detect hints of coffee, vanilla, smoke or other flavours derived from an oak barrel. Unpleasant smells can be indicative of flaws, like mustiness from a wine that has “corked,” but with any luck you won’t encounter these on your tasting. The permutations are limitless, so don’t overthink this step or you’ll end up confusing yourself.

Instead just take a small sip. The flavour should be pleasantly balanced between acidity, sweetness, and astringency. Acidity gives wine its gratifying tartness and is often what is being referred to when people describe a wine as “crisp.” Too little acidity causes a wine to taste flat while too much makes it taste downright sour. Personal preference plays a role here, as does food pairing – salty, fatty foods can help counterbalance high acidity. Sweetness is determined by the amount of residual sugar, but the perception of it is similarly affected by acidity. A balanced wine won’t leave a cloying impression, but won’t leave your mouth feeling parched either. Thirdly, the sensation of astringency is provided by tannins, which are derived from grape skins, stems, and seeds. They lend a wine complexity provided they don’t leave your mouth uncomfortably dry.

An older wine is more likely to blend these qualities seamlessly, whereas in a younger wine they can sometimes feel as if they are jostling for position. If a young wine strikes you as exceptionally well-balanced, you may have real winner on your hands. Beyond these broad characteristics, a wine should evoke subtle flavour characteristics like caramel and clove.

Pay attention to texture as well. A higher alcohol content, for instance, can give wine more body for a luxurious, velvety impression on the palate. The best wines will continue to linger and evolve for a long time. Resist the urge to sip again too soon and savour the finish. It may help to take notes: verbalizing a sense impression is hard to begin with, and it doesn’t get easier the next day. Taking notes will help you remember which wines you enjoyed best, and which you might like to take home with you.

If you’re tasting multiple wines, don’t forget to cleanse your palate in between. Water is your best choice here, but you may be surprised to know the same doesn’t apply to rinsing your glass. Some experts feel water dilutes the taste of a wine, so prefer simply to refill the glass with the next variety. The exception is when switching between reds and whites or vastly different varietals, when a splash of the upcoming variety is swirled and dumped to prime the glass instead.

Beyond simply cleansing your palate, remember to pace yourself. That goes double if you’re cycling between wineries and need to stay alert. Don’t be afraid to spit out your wine in the provided receptacles. Staff won’t mind, even if you pour out the remainder of a glass you don’t intend to finish. Doing so simply allows you taste more varieties, won’t impact your enjoyment of the flavour, and keeps you safe on the road.

Fully understanding and appreciating the nuances of wine is the work of a lifetime — just ask a master vintner. The depth and breadth of the subject is enthralling, but at the end of the day wine is meant to be enjoyed. Trust your palate and drink in the surroundings. Stop at the right vineyard, and a tasting might the highlight of your next tour.

People contemplating a vacation are often pulled in two contradictory directions, caught between the desire for downtime to rest and recharge and the allure of active, potentially new experiences. We might be a tad biased, but at Pure Adventurers we’re big believers in the benefits of private custom group travel. A tight group of family and friends makes for a more intimate and independent trip, while leveraging the skills of a local guide who can open up new, immersive, and “insider” options.

Our tours are designed with couples, families, and friends in mind. There are plenty of options out there for traveling with strangers, from the economy-class to the super-deluxe, but our model allows travelers more freedom to customize their journey based on their unique interests. Taking a group of your likeminded nearest and dearest on a biking and dining tour through Catalonia, for instance, fosters an entirely different mindset than a traditional fixed itinerary group tour where you spend a lot of time being herded from place with travelers you just met. A private custom trip often allows for the unexpected and serendipitous moments that become lasting memories. Although you might never share the same hobbies as your sister-in-law, her passion for music could lead you to make a stop at the Czech Museum of Music while in Prague. Suddenly you can tick “play a theremin” off your bucket list. Return the favour with a culinary suggestion that pushes her boundaries, and you’ve got the makings of a unique family experience that bonds rather than bores.

Once the itinerary is settled, we handle the logistic details to create a seamless trip. You as the group leader don’t get bogged down. If you’ve ever played the role of cat herder at a large gathering you know how complicated marshalling groups can be. By keeping your group to around a dozen or so, you’ll minimize unwieldiness while leveraging group purchasing power. You can realize some savings just by taking on an extra member or two, since for every ten guests the eleventh travels free — see our Ways to Save page for details. Furthermore, some adventurous experiences that just aren’t feasible for two are easily affordable for a party of six of more. That also means it’s possible to accommodate varying levels of ability on a more active excursion, thanks to additional guides who provide support and transfers.

Speaking of guides, a savvy local’s recommendation is sometimes the surest way to track down the unscripted moments that make for an “oh, wow” vacation memory. We work with individuals who are passionate about their home and culture and willing to share recommendations a little (or a lot) off the beaten track. After the plan is set based on the requests of the group, we leave room to keep the experience active but properly paced.

If you’d prefer to ‘leave the guiding to us’, we can work with you to design a fully escorted trip with one of expert guides from start to finish.

Whether you’re looking to explore Europe, Asia, or South America, Pure Adventures will work with you to strike an artful balance of independence and support for considerably less than a traditional packaged tour. Providing that fluidity takes a little extra lead time, so it’s worth rallying your travel companions now for a 2019 excursion. Get started by checking out our Destinations and Activities options in the menu above, and then give us call! Private custom group travel is what we do – let us help orchestrate your trip, your way.
