What is Real ID?

The Real ID Act, passed in 2005, sets higher security standards for state-issued driver’s licenses and identification cards. Starting May 7, 2025, travellers in the U.S. will need a Real ID-compliant form of identification to board domestic flights or access certain federal facilities.

How do I get a Real ID?

Visit your local Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) with the required documents, including proof of identity, Social Security number, and residency. Look for the star marking on your ID to confirm compliance. If you don’t have a Real ID, you can use alternatives like a valid passport, Global Entry card, Military ID, or Enhanced Driver’s License.

Requirements often change, so be sure to reference the official Real ID website for the most up to date details!

Introducing the ETIAS for European Travel – What is the ETIAS?

The ETIAS, or European Travel Information and Authorization System, is an electronic travel authorization required for travellers from visa-exempt countries, including Canada and the US, to enter most European Union countries. It is not a visa but a mandatory entry requirement for short stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day period.

Originally slated for implementation in 2025, ETIAS was delayed due to adjustments in the rollout timeline for the Entry/Exit System (EES). Starting in late 2026, many travellers will need an ETIAS to enter most European Union countries. If you previously entered Europe without a visa, you will now need an ETIAS approval.

Who Needs the ETIAS?

The ETIAS applies to travellers from visa-exempt countries, including:

• Australia
• Canada
• Japan
• New Zealand
• United Kingdom
• United States

How do I Apply for the ETIAS?

The process is simple and online. You’ll need:

• A valid U.S. passport
• A debit or credit card to pay the €7 fee
• Basic personal and travel information
