Day 1 l Arrival Day in Trevi: short warm up ride possible

Travel to the charming town of Trevi in Umbria, near Perugia. Arrive by train at Trevi and then take a taxi to your hotel. Note: We will arrange your transfer to the hotel upon arrival at Trevi train station but this must be booked in advance.

In the late afternoon or early evening, we will provide a welcome orientation which includes all information, bike & road book delivery. We will suggest a few of our favorite restaurants within a short walking distance from your hotel. At 6pm, enjoy an olive oil tasting (included) from our friend Valentina, whose family owns 6,000 hectares of olive trees and produces a significant quantity of olive oil annually. Trevi oils are truly some of the best we've tried! Some foods to try in Italy

Trevi was a theater town back in Roman times and the Teatro Clitunno remains one of the town’s most important gathering places. Remnants of the rings of Mura Romana (Roman Wall) and Mura Medieval (Medieval Wall) still can be found encircling the town. Visit the main piazza and the Church of San Francesco for a step back in time! A short warm up ride is possible. Have questions? Send us your questions here!

Day 3 | From Trevi to Torgiano: 64 km / 29 mi

Again we start after breakfast, at your leisure. The route today is a little longer and will take you northwest to Torgiano, towards Perugia. The town is strongly connected with wine production. One of the highlights of today is the visit to Lungarotti winery, where you may wish to taste the rich red & white wines of the region! In town, we suggest a visit to the wine and/or olive oil museum, part of the Lungarotti Foundation (supplement of 25 euros/person must be booked in advance; includes 3 wines, cheeses and salami) Wine tasting at Lungarotti must be booked in advance and includes food pairings. This really is a "must do" experience; Mercedes at the winery will be delighted to share everything with you. Afterward, you have time to relax back at your hotel around the pool or in town, where you can sample some local wine and cheese.

Note: the important religious town of Assisi did not make our standard tour. We can add an extra night in Torgiano with a ride to Assisi and back, which leaves plenty of time to explore and ride. Please inquire when booking. We also highly recommend the wine and olive oil museums for visiting; note they are closed 1 day a week, varies with season. Please inquire with us.

Day 5 | Cortona to Pienza via Montepulciano: 71 km / 44 mi

From Cortona you begin your ride with a lovely downhill and ride through the quiet countryside of Tuscany. You can enjoy some smooth and flat cycling once down on this stage before making your way up to Montepulciano. Be prepared for breath taking views but the climbs may also claim some breaths! The views and gorgeous landscape of course more than make up for the hard work on the climbs. Take a break in Montepulciano and visit the cafe and town before continuing. The final stop is Pienza and when you arrive, you will forget all about the hills and fall in love with this postcard hill top town.

In Pienza, once called Corsignano, you are in a place that was completely restored by Pope Pio II: Enea Silvio Piccolomini beginning in 1459. The entire village was rebuilt as the ideal Renaissance town and was the beginning of urban planning concepts, with the central square surrounded by important buildings (palaces, cathedrals, clock towers.) Pienza became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996 due to its cultural significance in urban planning. Be sure to take a walk along the city walls where you will be enchanted by the views and of course, you must try the 'pici' - a special homemade pasta made in Pienza - accompanied by your choice of mixed ingredients. Mama mia!!

It is like this that the Orcia-valley every morning comes to our eyes, barren and cozy at the same time, beautiful to make you smile and, above all, untouched. Day 6 | Pienza Loop with Montalcino: 81 km / 50 mi or 51 km / 32 mi

Today you have a choice of loop rides with return to Pienza. The long route takes you to Montalcino, one of the most famous towns of Tuscany. Once here, you can see why this place is special and not only for the Brunello wine! You will cycle through charming villages and wonderful landscapes, along forests and some of the typical countrysides that make Tuscany so famous. Some sections of this route travel on some busier roads as this is the only way to connect small country roads without going to gravel strada bianca. Have a delicious lunch in Montalcino and spend some time exploring this small town. On the way back, the ride stops at Bagno Vignoni, a small medieval village famous since the Roman times for its thermal waters. You may like to take the time for a relaxing soak here. (See supplement spa package in Rates section.) There is also an option to visit is the Sant'Antimo Abbey, the former Benedictine abbey with history dating back to the 8th century. The shorter ride option includes Montepulciano and Monticchiello before returning to Pienza (hilly) and requires a 1.2km section of packed gravel road.

Another option is a cooking class near Pienza: Traditional Italian Farm to Table Cooking class. You will tour the local farm with our chef/guide and learn how produce and dairy are produced in the region. Using farm raised produce and ingredients, you will learn how to make traditional wood-fired pizza and breads. Be sure to come hungry! Once your creation is complete, you will be able to eat the delicious food you have prepared.
