Day 1 | Arrive in Amboise

Your arrival town is Amboise, located right on the Loire River, and accessible from Paris by train. On the south side of the river lies the town centre and castle, where French kings spent their childhoods during the XV and XVI centuries. In town, there is also a museum displaying many of the inventions of Leonardo da Vinci, who spent the last few years of his life here until he died in 1519. The center has very nice walking streets, pastry shops, cafes and wine shops with 'degustation'! Allow some time to visit and if in summer, take in the Sound and Light show at the Castle this evening. Orientation and bike delivery will be tonight or tomorrow morning at your hotel; we confirm time with your booking.

Day 2 | Loop ride to Chenonceau: 28 or 40 km / 17 or 25 mi

After breakfast, you can get ready to ride at your leisure. The day is yours to do how you like, which is the beauty of a self-guided cycling tour! The highlight of today’s ride is the chateau of Chenonceau, the most romantic of all the Loire chateaux. It sits on the Cher River, whose waters reflect the pale stone of the beautiful turrets and arches, and was the home of both Catherine de Medicis and Diane de Poitiers. Back to Amboise again tonight and dinner on your own.

Your ride options: 28 km or 40 km loop between the Loire and Cher valleys. Mainly on very quiet country roads, the short ride will make the best warm-up! The longer one takes you first through the vineyards of Mont-Louis, where you will find an excellent white wine.

Day 5 | Ride to Chinon: 38 km / 21 mi

Today you cycle through vineyards to the west to the Loire River. From the village of Bréhémont, it is an absolute delight as you ride along the gentle river. After a while, you will leave the Loire Valley and cross the plateau to reach Chinon and the Vienne River. On the way, you will ride facing the Chateau of Ussé….it is straight out of a fairy tale!

The city of Chinon deserves at least half a day for visiting and your hotel has a perfect location to do so. It is famous for its Medieval streets and a ruined château, where the first meeting between St. Joan of Arc and King Charles VII of France took place in 1429. A statue of the 16th-century French writer François Rabelais, who was born (1494) and raised in the vicinity, stands on the river embankment. The château which can be seen up on the rocks, far above the town, was the residence of Henry Plantagenets!

Day 7 | Loop ride through Chinon vineyards: 28 or 45 km / 17 or 28 mi

Today is dedicated to cycling the Vienne Valley up-stream, the famous vineyards of Chinon and some charming villages like Panzoult and Cravant les Côteaux. Chinon wine is exclusively made of the Cabernet-Franc grape and you will find opportunities to taste some along the way.
