The Dordogne department was created after the French revolution in 1790 and lies in southwest France in the region of Aquitaine. Our Dordogne bike tour is located mostly in the area of Périgord Noir (black) but it passes through more of the Perigord colors too. This "Highlights" tour starts and finishes in the village of Monpazier, south of the Dordogne River, with an elegant hotel for your first and last nights. You will visit the pre-history sites of Les Eyzies and Montignac and visit the highly charming town of Sarlat, a wonderful medieval town located in the heart of Perigord Noir. This area is known as the cradle of prehistoric times, marking the beginning of European history. As you travel through the valleys of the Dordogne and Vézère, you will enjoy extraordinary visits of the cave paintings of Lascaux and Eyzies, the area's most famous prehistoric sites. Fascinating abbeys, troglodyte (cave) dwellings, medieval castles and towns, multi-colored fields of crops and vineyards, are all the background of this beautiful corner of France. We will experience the traditional cuisine of Perigord, as well as the great wines from neighbouring Bordeaux vineyards, when we stop at charming local restaurants along the way.
Let us introduce you to the Dordogne, Monpazier – a historic fortified ‘bastide’ village, and of course to our hotel. Come and experience the natural beauty and explore the history of Monpazier, while you relax in our comfortable 19th century petit-chateau hotel. Set in the heart of the Dordogne, Hotel - Restaurant Edward 1er is a beautiful hotel with a stunning view over the surrounding rolling countryside.
