The ride today will be through the 'green heart ' of Holland: along canals, lakes and lovely windmills. In the village of Rijpwetering, you will pass by a cheese farm typical to Casteleijn. They make this delicious cheese in their factory daily from the fresh milk of their 120 dairy cows. Within view of the factory you will find the shop. Day 3 | Leiden – Gouda (45 km / 28 miles)

After breakfast you bike through the historic town of Leiden. If you haven’t been able to stroll around the town during your first evening, don’t worry as you will pass by all of the town's highlights. These include: the Burcht van Leiden (a medieval fortification), the Botanical Garden, the impressive city canal ‘Rapenburg’ and the Windmill Museum - De Valk. Last but not least, you should visit the very nice cheese shop "Fromagerie Bon." Leaving the town of Leiden and entering the ‘green heart‘ of Holland again, pass canals and windmills, riding all of the way to Boskoop. Famous for its nurseries, particularly woody plants and perennials, it is situated on long stretches of land, divided by narrow canals. In the afternoon you will visit the Cheese Museum in Bodegraven, where you will learn everything about cheese-making the authentic way. The final part of today’s ride takes you through one of the most lovely lake districts in the Netherlands, near Reeuwijk, with your day’s journey finishing at the famous cheese town of Gouda. Visit De Waag (Weigh House,) where they formerly used to weigh cheeses. Nowadays it houses the Cheese and Crafts Museum.

Day 5 | Gouda – Utrecht (55 km / 34 miles)

By leaving Gouda (maybe after visiting the cheese market on Thursday mornings,) you will ride along the picturesque River Vlist, a beloved stretch among cyclists and pedestrians, who enjoy walking or riding along it. The river itself is often navigated with canoes and if the river is sufficiently frozen in winter, skating tours are organized for the ice enthusiasts. The ‘Heksenwaag’ (Witch Scales) is a famous highlight in the old center of Oudewater. In the 16th century, people accused of witchcraft all over Europe were allowed to prove their innocence in Oudewater and avoid being burned at the stake. After the weighing, they received an official certificate proclaiming that they were not witches! Even today you can get this certificate. The final destination of your ride today is the town of Utrecht, which features many buildings and structures dating back to the Middle Ages. It has been the main religious center of the Netherlands since the 8th century and until the Dutch Golden Age, was considered the most important city in Holland.

I would like to reiterate how nice, comfortable and well-situated all the hotels were during our recent bicycling trip thru the Dutch countryside. Also, Peter is to be greatly commended and recommended!!!... His bikes were the best we ever used and his directions (especially the GPS handheld device) were easy to follow... I think Pure Adventures has found its Holland contact...Jose
