Your West Sicily Tour Through History starts from Erice. This small medieval town is located on top of the mountain that towers above Trapani, on the NW side of the island. A private transfer from either Trapani or Palermo airport is included in the tour package. Once you are at your hotel, you will have your private welcome orientation and bike fitting. The town nowadays has a very pleasant medieval atmosphere and in ancient times it was an important religious centre for the Elymians, a population that lived in western Sicily before the Greek colonization. Don’t miss your chance to taste the local pastry called “Genovese” stuffed with delicious cream. Yum! You will also not want to miss the view from the castle at sunset, overlooking the Trapani province, the salt marshes on the coast and the Egadi islands.

Bike ride to San Vito Lo Capo (the seaside hamlet NE from Erice) and transfer back to Erice. “Saint Vitus Cape" is a charming coastal town in the Trapani area with a lovely sandy beach. Extending below Mount Cofano, a high pointed limestone cliff visible from distance, San Vito is near the Zingaro Nature Reserve and the hamlet of Scopello, where some scenes of the movie Ocean's Twelve were filmed in 2004. San Vito is known for its annual couscous festival (see below). A good place for a vacation, and with Erice and Segesta it represents one of the Sicily's historic jewels.

For lunch you may like to taste the traditional couscous or "kuskus," which is a Berber dish known in all of northern Africa. You can enjoy it with fresh vegetables or freshly-caught fish. The Couscous Festival at San Vito Lo Capo is a combination of culture, tradition and culinary art. This event is held in Sicily in September and the best chefs from the Mediterranean area compete with their finest recipes. Day 7 Seaside Ride to Wine Country of Marsala: 71 km / 44 miles

Today's ride will take you to the town of Marsala on the coast, back in the direction of Trapani. The name Marsala is well known because of the well-known wine label. This last ride is a coastal view experience by the sea, to the southwest of the island. If you have enjoyed Selinunte, you may find it interesting to stop at Cave di Cusa, the quarry from where the Greeks carved the rock for the Selinunte temples. It's fascinating to see how the columns are still in the ground, unfinished. The site, near Campobello di Mazara, gives a clear idea about the way in which the temples were built. Visiting this site, one seems to be catapulted back to the fatal moment when the work of the people of Selinunte was abruptly interrupted, perhaps because of the arrival of the Carthaginian troops, which had set out to destroy the city. Going through Campobello di Mazara, you’ll reach Mazara del Vallo and then Marsala.

One of the most outstanding qualities of western Sicily is the juxtaposition of colors, constantly changing according to the season. The sea is a predominant feature. It’s many shades of green, turquoise and blue, contrast sharply with the intense whiteness of the salt mines, exulted by the warm sun that makes everything glow or shine. Inland, the greens, yellows and browns characterize the seemingly infinite succession of cultivated rolling hills, dotted with soft colored buildings, whites, creams, yellows and greys, depending on the material used and the period of construction. The sun also helps give the excellent Sicilian food and wine it’s vivid color as many dishes make use of the wide selection of fresh vegetables found locally such, as tomatoes, egg plants, peppers, zucchini, olives, oranges and capers as well as many types of cow and sheep cheese and fresh fish. The enormous variety of almond based desserts is a wide topic you should definitely indulge in.
