First of all, remember it’s a good idea to get a teen’s input on what they’re looking for in a vacation. Since Pure Adventures tours are self-guided, we have a lot of leeway to customize the schedule to a traveler’s unique preferences. For active families, our multisport tours offer a great deal of variety and can be adjusted to include more of a favourite hobby: hiking, biking, horseback riding, kayaking, etc. This can be an excellent option if your teens enjoy a challenge and pushing for new achievements. Not all kids are sports junkies, obviously, so customizing a trip may be a matter of including a destination that interests them, adding special meals to the menu, or simply budgeting in unstructured time.

Whatever route you choose, travel at a young age can be life-changing. Here are our top picks for a memorable family vacation.

France Loire Royal Valley Cycling Tour

We recommend the Royal Valley cycling tour for its well-balanced characteristics. The cycling distances are approximately forty kilometres per day, a satisfying length that most occasional cyclists can handle. The terrain is flat to gently rolling, and enlivened by impressive castles. A duration of five nights and six days, and good pricing on mid-range lodging, make it easy to keep the budget manageable.

The tour begins in the town of Amboise. There the museum at Clos Lucé, where Leonardo Da Vinci spent the last years of his life, has a selection of engaging, interactive displays. Or book a kayak trip around Castle Chenonceau for a unique perspective on one of the region’s most beautiful chateaus. History can be a hard sell for kids, but you might get some traction by introducing them to the story of Joan of Arc, whose campaign is commemorated at spots throughout the Loire Valley. The Château de Blois, which this tour visits on Day Four, also has many tales of intrigue and assassination to fire the imagination.

Italy – Dolomites To Lake Garda Cycling Tour

Despite beginning in the impressive Dolomites mountain range, this is a relatively easy tour thanks to a route that runs mostly downhill along bike paths. Adults will probably be drawn to the Sicilian coffee and the ancient theatre of Taormina, which dates to the 3rd century BC.

The Dalmatian Coast – this is the place in Croatia that is most known! Lots of coastline and access to literally hundreds of islands just a short boat ride away. The mainland coast is dotted with historical towns, cities, and villages, but the country is very narrow and so visiting the islands is absolutely part of a visit to the Dalmatian Coast. The Split to Dubrovnik Croatia Bike Tour offers ample opportunities to bike, hike and paddle.  After a day of adventure, visit one of these fabulous beaches to cool off at.

Banje Beach
Undoubtedly Dubrovnik’s most popular beach, Banje Beach is a sandy, pebbly beach visited by millions of people each year. To reach Banje Beach you exit the walled City of Dubrovnik through the east gate, and walk approximately 100 meters. Half of the beach is public, half of the beach – the sandier side – is run by the Eastwest Beach Club. Bring along some cash to rent a lounge chair if you plan to soak up the sun on the Eastwest portion of the beach.

Copacabana Beach
This family-friendly beach in Dubrovnik offers something for everyone – jet ski rentals, smooth sand, slides for the kids, lifts for people who need extra help getting in and out of the water, a water polo court and amazing views. Arrive early to secure a space to relax and stay late to watch the beach transform to a vibrant night club.

Blace Beach
Secluded and quiet, Blace Beach on the island of Mljet offers a sandy half mile long break from the sharp stones of Mljet’s shores. The water is very warm, a please change from the cooler waters outside of  this serene lagoon. Often visited by naturalists (aka nudists), Blace Beach is an oasis of tranquility when compared to Dubrovnik’s bustling beaches.

Veliko Jezero
If your trip to Mljet includes time at the National Park, make sure you visit Veliko Jezero. The beach along Large Lake is a favorite among visitors for swimming since they can simply float away their worries – Veliko Jezero is a natural salt lake!

Zaton Beach
Awarded the prestigious Blue Flag for its water purity and beach cleanliness, Zaton Beach boasts warm water and sandy shores making it ideal for families with young children. Thrill seekers also flock to Zaton Beach for the wide variety of sports activities offered, including parasailing!

Bačvice Beach
The super-fine sand on Bačvice beach draws in tourists from the nearby ferry terminal, making it one of the busiest beaches in Croatia. Admittedly, there are nicer (and less crowded beaches) in Split, but Bačvice is the home of the unique and acrobatic game of picigin, a netless version of volleyball in the sea where players perform gravity defying leaps to prevent the ball from hitting the water.

Žnjan Beach
The newest beach in Split is also the biggest! What makes Žnjan so popular is the ample parking, wide sandy bays, brilliant blue seascapes and modern and convenient visitor amenities, ensuring a fun and comfortable day in the sun.

Beach Zakrjan
The most popular in Korcula Town boasts deep, clean water, ideal for jumping off the large rocks that protect Zakrjan Beach from the cool afternoon winds. Located on the eastern edge of town, Zakrjan is the oldest swimming spot in the area. The cafes a short walk away from the beach are a great place to relax and enjoy a bite to eat. Note that access to the beach is via steep and narrow stairs, making Zakrjan best for active adventurers.

Tatinja Beach
This sandy beach in Lumbarda is popular choice for families with kids, in part to the shallow warm waters and nearby ice cream stands. Because of this, Tatinja becomes quickly crowded, so sunbathers seeking a quiet place to relax will want to arrive early to enjoy the sunrise and then out once the sun is up. Off-season is quieter here in Lumbarda.

Istruga Bay
Some people prefer to hit the beach for a day on the sand, but savvy travelers know that the reason behind a day at Istruga Bay is to spend time in the healing mud at the bottom of the bay. Located on the southern side of Korcula, Istruga Bay also offers table tennis, volleyball and a small restaurant.

Mekicevica
A short 2.5 kilometer walk east from the center of Hvar town are the two pebbly beaches of Mekicevia. These hidden gems are perfect for travelers wanting a break from the crowds in bustling Hvar.

Palmizana
Palmizana is best known for its amazing array of fragrant plant, such as rosemary and heather, but beach goers flock to this quaint island for its spacious cove and shallow sandy beach. Boat transfers to Palmizana are easily arranged.

Pure Adventures helped Deb and John, two cyclists from North Carolina, book a self guided cycling trip to the Istrian Peninsula earlier this year. While they were worried that spending a few days in Venice on either side of their trip to Croatia would add complications to their holidays, our travel planners helped make their self guided holiday stress free by arranging customized trip start and departures. Here, Deb to shares with us her most memorable moments from Croatia.

Our entire trip was extraordinary. We loved starting and ending our holiday in Venice with the sightseeing, history art, food and, of course, all the gondolas, gondolas, gondolas. And even the drive to begin our trip was nice, which started from the Tronchetto car park in Venice and ended in Buje, where we began biking. We drove through Trieste where my husband John had worked a few years ago helping to redevelop part of the old port city.

I think the first highlight of the trip was simply how beautiful and unspoiled Istria is. We rode through rolling hills, vineyards, olive tree orchards and along the seashore. And it seemed like we got to visit two different, wonderful worlds – the quite countryside and lovely hilltop towns in Istria’s interior and then the bustling, lively port cities of Porec and Rovinj.

Another of the best things about the trip was the consistent, high-quality of the places where we stayed – all were well-located, extremely comfortable, with friendly, helpful staff, and no lost bags. Motovun was extraordinary with breathtaking views of the surrounding vineyards, and the Hotel Kastel was lovely and we took full advantage of the hotel’s spa after our full days of riding. We absolutely adored being in old town Rovinj and staying in one of the fun, funky Casa Garzotto apartments.

Besides traveling, we absolutely love good food and drink, and in this regard our trip was terrific – in fact, world class. First, in the interior, we sampled lots of the local foods and even stopped at a road-side “fast food” restaurant, which was fun – simple sausages, potatoes – and so unlike the McDonald’s and other chain fast food places in the US. In Motovun and Bale, we had handmade pastas, local game all made with truffles and olive oils from the region. On the coast it was all seafood – grilled whole fish, squid, octopus, ceviche – all extraordinary. Everywhere we went, we also sampled the local wines, including teran, a hearty red, merlots and lovely whites.

By way of surprises and the unexpected, there were a number and most were related to making a detour or side trip from the routes the folks at Pure Adventures had outlined for us. Not that that the planned itinerary wasn’t wonderful, but our trip was an adventure after all. First, we made a short side trip from Motovun to nearby Kaldir to visit the Benvenuti winery – it was amazing. We tasted wines all afternoon with the Benvenuti family and their guests, and then filled our bike panniers with all the teran, muscat and malvasia istriana they could hold.

Another highlight was a last-minute decision to hop on a ferry from Vrsar to Rovinj. We were eating (and drinking wine) at a great little harbor-side restaurant in Vrsar and one thing led to another and we were on our way to Rovinj by boat – it was a blast, especially being handed a grappa as a toast when we jumped onboard. Arriving in Rovinj by sea was breathtaking.

So all in all, our trip to Istria was one of the best, maybe the best holiday of our lives – simply extraordinary.

Where is your favorite place to bicycle in Croatia?
The sideways of Istria. The hills around Motovun are magical, you find there cute little villages with olive groves and wine is just fantastic there.

Where is the best place to eat?
In Istria this must be Marko’s homemade gnocchi with black truffles and a touch of virgin Istrian olive oil. And where is Marko? Well, for that you will have to for a ride with me!

What is your best tip for tour riders?
It is all about the experience. It is not a race. Take it easy, you are in Istria in the Balkans, where time go by slowly. Stop at the local market, pick up a fresh apricot, rub a rosemary leaf between your fingers, greet a local farmer working on his vineyard and take a dip into the sea. Do drink a lot of water, take a rest in the shade and enjoy!

What you always pack in your pannier?
My swimsuit! There are so many beautiful beaches in Istria – remember, your trip is about the experience!
