What’s Better About a Self‑Guided Bike Tour? Top 5 Reasons It’s the Best Way to Explore by Bike

If you’re researching your next cycling vacation and wondering what’s better about a Self-Guided Bike Tour versus a Guided Bike Tour, you’re not alone. More and more travelers are choosing self‑guided bike tours because they offer freedom, flexibility, and a more authentic connection to the places you ride through — things that guided bike tours just don’t offer in the same way.

This guide breaks down the top 5 reasons a self‑guided bike tour is better than a guided tour, especially for riders who want independence without sacrificing support.

1. You Control the Pace — No Group Schedule, No Pressure

One of the biggest advantages of a self‑guided bike tour is better than a guided tour is the ability to ride exactly how you want. On a guided tour, you’re tied to a group pace, group start times, and group breaks.

On a self‑guided tour, you can:

Start early or sleep in

Stop for photos, wine, coffee, or a swim

Ride faster or slower depending on how you feel

Spend extra time in a village or viewpoint you love

This flexibility is especially valuable in scenic destinations; consider our Portugal bike tours, Spain bike tours, France bike tours, Italy bike tours, Slovenia bike tours, and Croatia bike tours, where every corner offers something worth exploring.

2. More Authentic Travel — Explore Like a Local, Not a Tourist Group

Guided tours often move in a pack, following a fixed schedule. A self‑guided bike tour lets you blend into the local rhythm. You can wander into small cafés, chat with locals, or take detours that aren’t possible with a group.

This style of travel feels more personal and immersive. You’re not just following a guide — you’re discovering the region on your own terms.

3. Better Value — More Affordable Without Sacrificing Support

Self‑guided bike tours typically cost significantly less than guided tours because you’re not paying for a full‑time guide or support vehicle.

Yet you still get:

Pre‑planned routes

Luggage transfers

Navigation tools

Local emergency support

Comfortable accommodations

It’s the perfect balance of independence and convenience — ideal for travelers who want a high‑quality cycling experience without the premium price tag of guided travel.

4. Freedom to Customize Your Experience

On a guided tour, the itinerary is fixed. On a self‑guided bike tour, you can shape your day however you like.

Want to add a winery visit? Explore a UNESCO site for longer? Prefer a leisurely lunch while the weather subsides? Want to skip a museum and ride extra miles?

You can.

This flexibility is especially appealing in regions with rich cultural and culinary experiences — think Tuscany’s vineyards, Provence’s lavender fields, Spain’s tapas towns, or Croatia’s coastal villages.

5. Perfect for Independent Travelers Who Still Want Support

A self‑guided bike tour gives you independence without leaving you on your own. You still have:

24/7 local support

Pre‑tested routes

Digital navigation

Daily luggage transfers

It’s ideal for riders who don’t want to be micromanaged by a guide but still want the reassurance of a well‑organized trip.

You get the adventure of independent travel with the safety net of professional planning.

So, What’s Better About a Self‑Guided Bike Tour?

In short: freedom, flexibility, authenticity, value, and independence — with support when you need it.

For many cyclists, that combination makes a self‑guided bike tour the best way to explore Europe’s most beautiful regions.

Packing for a self-guided bike tour can set the tone for a seamless and enjoyable adventure. As you prepare for your self-guided cycling tour, it’s essential to prioritize comfort, functionality, and preparation. Whether you’re exploring idyllic countryside trails or navigating bustling city streets, having the right items in your luggage will ensure you’re ready for anything. Check out our self-guided bike tour packing guide with essential tips and recommendations for your self-guided bike tour.

Bike Tour Gear Essentials

When it comes to your self-guided bike tour, the right cycling gear is non-negotiable. Start with high-quality padded bike shorts to cushion your ride and a moisture-wicking cycling jersey that keeps you cool and visible. A lightweight rain jacket or windbreaker is a must-have, as weather conditions can change quickly. Pair these with durable cycling gloves for added grip and protection, and, of course, you may prefer to bring your own helmet and pedals, for comfort and familiarity. If your self-guided cycling tour includes using your smartphone for navigation, pack a universal handlebar mount and a backup battery or portable charger to stay connected and on track.

Clothing Tips for Comfort and Versatility

Packing light yet practical clothing is key to any successful self-guided bike tour. Opt for versatile pieces that can double up for both cycling and casual outings. For warmer climates, bring breathable T-shirts, convertible pants or shorts, and a hat for sun protection. If your route takes you to cooler areas or involves evening exploration, include long-sleeve shirts, a fleece jacket, and a pair of comfortable walking shoes. Many self-guided cycling tours include stops at charming local eateries or cultural spots, so pack a smart-casual outfit to make the most of these opportunities.

Accessories for Self-Guided Cycling Convenience

Accessories can make all the difference during a bike tour. A small saddlebag or daypack is ideal for carrying essentials like sunscreen, lip balm, a reusable water bottle, and snacks. A personal first aid kit should include plasters, pain relievers, and any necessary medications. Other useful items for your self-guided bike tour include insect repellent, a bandana or cap for extra sun protection, and a waterproof cover for your belongings. To document your adventure, bring a compact camera or make sure your smartphone has ample storage and battery power.

Luggage and Organization

We wholeheartedly love Eagle Creek gear for its exceptional quality, innovative design, and dependability—perfect companions for the adventurous spirit!
Practical Packing Tips for Your Bike Tour Packing List

On a self-guided cycling tour, packing light is just as important as packing right. Many bike tours include luggage transfer services, so plan to carry only the essentials while you ride. Choose multi-functional clothing, such as pants that convert to shorts, to save space. Quick-dry materials are helpful for minimizing laundry needs. Pack toiletries in travel-sized containers to reduce bulk, and use packing cubes to keep everything organized. Consider bringing a small toolkit with essentials like a tire patch kit, multi-tool, and spare tubes, just in case.

Final Thoughts

A self-guided bike tour offers the freedom and flexibility to explore at your own pace, and thoughtful packing ensures you’re fully prepared for every moment. Use this bike tour packing list and packing tips to gear up for an unforgettable journey. By focusing on comfort, efficiency, and adaptability, you’ll be ready to fully embrace the adventure, whether you’re tackling scenic trails, charming villages, or bustling cityscapes. So, pack smartly, hop on your bike, and let the joy of self-guided cycling tours lead the way! Happy pedaling!

If you’ve ever dreamt of pedaling through picturesque landscapes, savoring world-class cuisine, and soaking in the cultural essence of France, there’s no better way to make that dream come true than with a self-guided bike tour. France offers countless regions perfect for cycling enthusiasts, but three stand out as must-visit destinations: Normandy, Provence, and the Loire Valley. Here’s why you should grab your helmet and set off on this unforgettable journey.

Normandy: A Blend of History and Coastal Beauty

Here’s why a self-guided bike tour in France should be your next adventure: Normandy, with its stunning coastline, historic landmarks, and charming villages, is a cyclist’s paradise. The rolling countryside provides scenic routes through lush green pastures and apple orchards, while the iconic D-Day beaches and medieval towns, such as Bayeux, add layers of history to your journey. And the food? Normandy is famous for its creamy Camembert cheese, rich butter, and mouthwatering apple-based dishes—don’t miss a chance to try the local cider! The best time for cycling here is late spring through early autumn when the weather is mild and the skies are clear.

Provence: Lavender Fields and Mediterranean Charm

Provence is the epitome of romance and charm. Famous for its vibrant lavender fields, olive groves, and vineyards, this region offers routes that take you through quaint villages like Gordes and Roussillon. The Mediterranean climate ensures warm, sunny days, making it ideal for cycling between May and September.

Cycling in Provence also means indulging in its culinary delights. From ratatouille to bouillabaisse, and paired with local rosé wines, every meal feels like a celebration. Don’t forget to enjoy the bustling markets, where fresh produce and Provençal specialties await!

Loire Valley: Castles, Vineyards, and Timeless Elegance

Known as the “Garden of France,” the Loire Valley is a dreamscape of châteaux, riverside paths, and sprawling vineyards. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is perfect for leisurely rides, allowing you to immerse yourself in the region’s natural beauty and architectural grandeur.

The Loire Valley is home to some of France’s most celebrated wines, including Sancerre and Vouvray, and you’ll find no shortage of wine-tasting opportunities. Pair these with regional specialties like rillettes and tarte Tatin for the ultimate experience. Spring and autumn are particularly beautiful times to explore the Loire, with pleasant temperatures and fewer crowds.

Imagine a journey through time, where each stop is a majestic castle nestled in a lush French landscape. Welcome to the Loire Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage site, known as the “Garden of France”. This region is home to over 300 castles, each with its unique charm and history. From the grandeur of Château de Chambord to the elegance of Château de Chenonceau, the Loire Valley is a treasure trove of architectural marvels. But wait, there’s more! The Loire Valley also offers enchanting castle gardens, scenic bicycle tours, and a rich cultural heritage. In this article, we’ll explore the seven best castles of the Loire Valley, providing you with a virtual tour and practical tips for your visit.

Discovering the Loire Valley: A Brief Overview

The Loire Valley, located in the heart of France, is a region steeped in history and natural beauty. It’s often referred to as the “Cradle of the French” and the “Garden of France” due to its fertile lands and the abundance of vineyards, fruit orchards, and artichoke fields lining the banks of the Loire River.

The valley is most famous for its castles, or “châteaux”, built between the 10th and 20th centuries. They range from fortresses built in the Middle Ages to opulent palaces designed for leisure during the Renaissance. These castles are not just architectural masterpieces, they also played a significant role in the history of France and Europe, serving as homes for kings, queens, and nobles, and as settings for key historical events.

The Loire region is a favorite for bike tours and cyclists of all types. Relatively flat with rolling topography punctuated by these man-made treasures, there is so much to enjoy and feel good about it after some time pedaling or hiking from site to site!

1. Château de Chambord: The Renaissance Masterpiece

Château de Chambord is the largest castle in the Loire Valley and a prime example of French Renaissance architecture.

Its construction began in 1519 under the reign of King Francis I, who wanted a hunting lodge that would surpass all others. The castle’s design is a blend of traditional French medieval forms with classical Renaissance structures. It’s most notable for its distinctive French Renaissance architecture, which includes elaborate towers, decorative chimneys, and a highly symmetrical facade. Inside, the castle is just as impressive, with 440 rooms, 282 fireplaces, and 84 staircases. The centerpiece is the double helix open staircase that is the centerpiece of the château.

Gardens and Grounds of Chambord

The castle is set within a vast walled park, the largest enclosed park in Europe, which serves as a nature reserve for various species of wildlife. The French formal garden, redesigned in the 18th century, is a perfect place for a leisurely stroll. The grounds also include a large canal system, reflecting pools, and a variety of flora, making it a haven for nature lovers and photographers alike.

2. Château de Chenonceau: Elegance Over Water

Château de Chenonceau, also known as the “Ladies’ Castle,” is one of the most visited and photographed châteaux in the Loire Valley. Built in the 16th century, it’s unique for its design and location, spanning the River Cher on a series of graceful arches. The castle is a testament to the influence of women in its history, with several notable women contributing to its construction, expansion, and preservation. Inside, the castle is beautifully furnished, with a remarkable collection of Renaissance paintings and tapestries. The highlight is the grand gallery that spans the river, offering stunning views.

Chenonceau’s Floral Mastery

The castle is renowned for its beautiful gardens, designed by two of the castle’s famous female owners, Diane de Poitiers and Catherine de Medici. Each garden is a masterpiece of Renaissance landscaping, with meticulously manicured lawns, colorful flower beds, and ornamental trees. These gardens not only add to the castle’s aesthetic appeal but also serve as a tranquil oasis for visitors to explore and enjoy.

3. Château de Villandry: The Garden’s Jewel

Château de Villandry is a must-visit for garden lovers. It’s not the castle’s architecture that steals the show here, but its stunning gardens. The castle itself, built in the 16th century, is a grand manor house with a unique blend of late Gothic and early Renaissance features. However, the real attraction is the six magnificent gardens that surround it. These include a water garden, ornamental flower gardens, and vegetable gardens, all laid out in formal patterns and separated by low box hedges. The gardens are a living work of art, changing with the seasons, and are considered among the best in the world.

Villandry by Bike: A Tourist’s Delight

Truly one of the highlights of visiting the Loire Valley is Villandry and its exquisite gardens. One of the best ways to explore Villandry and its surroundings is by bicycle. The castle is part of the “Loire à Vélo” cycle route, making it easily accessible for cyclists. Cycling allows visitors to enjoy the scenic countryside at a leisurely pace, with plenty of opportunities to stop and admire the views. So, whether you’re an avid cyclist or a casual rider, don’t miss the chance to experience Villandry by bike.

4. Château de Cheverny: Tintin’s Inspiration

Château de Cheverny is a beautifully preserved castle that has remained in the same family for over six centuries. It’s a perfect example of early 17th-century classical architecture, with its symmetrical facade and ornate interiors. But what makes Cheverny truly unique is its connection to the world of comics. The castle served as the inspiration for Marlinspike Hall, the home of Captain Haddock in the famous Tintin comics by Hergé. Inside, you’ll find a permanent exhibition dedicated to Tintin, making it a must-visit for fans of the comic series.

Cheverny’s Canine Companions

Cheverny is also known for its hunting tradition. The castle grounds are home to a pack of over 100 French hounds, which are taken out for hunts twice a week from April to November. Visitors can watch the feeding of the hounds, a spectacle that is as entertaining as it is unique. So, if you’re a dog lover or just curious about this age-old tradition, make sure to time your visit to coincide with this event.

5. Château d’Amboise: Royal Panoramas

Perched on a hill overlooking the Loire River, Château d’Amboise offers breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. This royal castle was a favorite residence of several French kings and queens, making it a significant site in French history. The castle’s architectural style is a blend of Gothic and Renaissance, reflecting the transition between these two periods. Its large round towers and fortified walls are a testament to its past as a medieval stronghold. Inside, you’ll find beautifully decorated rooms filled with period furniture and tapestries. The castle also houses a collection of Gothic and Renaissance art.

Amboise’s Leonardo da Vinci Connection

But perhaps the most fascinating aspect of Château d’Amboise is its connection to Leonardo da Vinci. The Italian master spent the last three years of his life in Amboise, at the invitation of King Francis I. He lived in the nearby Clos Lucé, now a museum dedicated to his life and work. But his final resting place is in the chapel of Château d’Amboise, making it a pilgrimage site for art lovers.

6. Château de Blois: A Blend of Eras

Château de Blois is a captivating mix of architectural styles, reflecting its construction and modifications over several centuries. It’s like a living history book, with each wing representing a different era – Gothic, Renaissance, and Classicism. The castle was a favorite residence of seven French kings and ten queens, making it a key location in the power struggles of the French court. Its ornate façade and lavishly decorated rooms bear witness to its royal past. Inside, you’ll find the stunning spiral staircase in the François I wing, a masterpiece of French Renaissance architecture. The castle also houses the Museum of Fine Arts, with a collection of paintings, sculptures, and decorative arts from the 16th to 19th centuries.

Blois: A Castle for All Seasons

Château de Blois is a delight to visit in any season. In spring and summer, the castle’s gardens burst into color, offering a tranquil spot for a leisurely stroll.

In autumn, the castle’s façade is beautifully illuminated during the “Sound and Light” show, a nightly spectacle that brings the history of Blois to life. And in winter, the castle’s interior offers a warm refuge, with its richly decorated rooms and art collections.

7. Château de Azay-le-Rideau: Island Elegance

Château de Azay-le-Rideau is a gem of French Renaissance architecture. It’s nestled on an island in the middle of the Indre River, creating a stunning reflection that enhances its beauty. The castle was built during the reign of Francis I, a period of artistic flourishing in France. Its elegant façade, adorned with sculpted decorations, is a testament to the refined taste of the era. Inside, the castle boasts beautifully furnished rooms that transport visitors back to the 16th century. The grand staircase, with its intricate carvings, is a highlight of the interior.

The Reflective Beauty of Azay-le-Rideau

The castle’s location on the river gives it a unique charm. The water surrounding the castle creates a mirror-like effect, reflecting the elegant structure and the sky above. This reflective beauty is particularly enchanting at sunset, when the castle is bathed in a warm, golden light. It’s a sight that’s sure to leave a lasting impression on any visitor.

Here at Pure Adventures, we have been watching travel trends for a long time – it’s what we do, and it’s safe to say that Slovenia is the “new Croatia,” an undiscovered gem similar to Croatia circa 2010. (Think gorgeous scenery, delicious cuisine, and a destination not yet completely overrun with tourists.) Simply put, if Slovenia is not on your radar yet, it should be. If it is on your radar, well, now is the time to go!

Slovenia has been gaining a lot of attention in the press lately, and with good reason. In recent years, Slovenia has hosted hundreds of journalists to discover all that they have to offer, with millions of euros dedicated to growing and supporting a sustainable tourism program. In addition to jaw-dropping landscapes, Slovenia’s highlights include a world-class wine and food culture and numerous boutique hotels that are internationally green certified — designations earned as sustainable destinations and responsible-travel stewards. So, not only is Slovenia a country with literally everything you could hope to see and experience on a self-guided bike tour and vacation, but it’s also leading the way with its environmentally-rooted tourism efforts. Now that’s something to feel good about!

But here’s why we love Slovenia…

In just one vacation, you can travel from Dolomites-like high-alpine landscapes in the Julian Alpes, to the “Tuscany of Slovenia,” with vineyards and delicious wines, finishing at the sparkling Adriatic Sea. Can you imagine? It’s literally all of the best landscapes in one trip!
Slovenia Self-Guided Bike Tour: Experience Slovenia in a way like no other – cycle from the Julian Alpes to Slovenia’s Tuscany to the Mediterranean Sea, visiting lakes and cycling alongside gently-flowing rivers. Slovenia is one of Europe’s most exquisite hidden treasures. Thanks to its sustainable tourism, perfectly-preserved landmarks, Michelin-starred restaurants, and world-class wine, Slovenia is emerging as one of the top bucket-list holiday destinations, per recent features in Nat Geo, Forbes, Lonely Planet, and Condé Nast. Among the greenery, the adventuring cyclist will also enjoy staying in Ljubljana, seeing castles, vineyards, lakes, and rivers, that would rival any “top” European destination. We’re now planning 3 more! Every trip was perfect beyond expectations – great routes, charming hotels, excellent staff support both before and during the trips. It’s honestly the only time in my life that I feel 100% care free. Riding a bike all day with friends and then ending at a lovely spot where your bags are waiting – there’s nothing like it. That little voice in the back of your head, constantly reminding you of things you have to do, simply stops. If I’m not ON a ride, I’ll be planning the next one.”

April 23, 2020: SELF GUIDED IS THE SOLUTION!

Self-guided travel after covid: Today we received a bit of good news and confirmation, in an e-newsletter from our industry peers at the Travel & Adventure Show group. This indicated that self guided travel will be the most sought after type of travel when people return to travel in the post COVID-19 era. As we have specialized and focused on self guided bike tours and self guided hiking tours for over 25 years, that is great news for us! And it makes sense, of course. When you think about the exact opposite of self-guided travel, it is something like a cruise ship, which has come to symbolize virus and transmission of illnesses. While small group travel also shows to be appealing to some, we know that any type of travel will be some time in coming.

From a survey by the Travel & Adventure Show group:

1700 people who have attended these shows and are identified as “Travel Enthusiasts”; Over Half will Still Travel in 2020

Over 56% stated they would not make changes to their current travel plans for 2020 (24.7%) or are re-booking for later in 2020 (31.5%).

In reference to what types of travel options will they be looking for in the future, approximately 60% are planning on both self-managed international and domestic vacations.

The hard to read text is:

Small Group International

Small Group Domestic

Self Managed Domestic

Self Managed International

Cruise

Other

The gold/yellow (3rd) and turquoise/aqua (4th) colored bars are showing interest in self guided travel. As it is called here, ‘self managed’, we take it to mean the same as self guided travel. This is a huge jump in a way of traveling that was virtually unknown when we first started selling self guided bike tours in the late 90’s. If you are not familiar with self guided travel, have a look at that link which describes it in detail. But in brief, a self guided trip is kind what it sounds like – travel without a guide. You are the pseudo guide and you manage your day to day itinerary. This is about the only common denominator because after that, you can find all kinds of self guided offers, which vary greatly from one another.

Pure Adventures has been offering upscale and customizable self guided adventures as hallmark and with a unique market position for 20 years. We know better than anyone how this works. But important to note, there are many more stripped down versions out there, where few services are included, thus bringing down the price. In turn, this increases the amount of work that the traveler must manage. Regardless, more people will come to experience self guided in the new travel environment and this is good not just for us tour specialists but also, for many others.

New destinations where there are fewer crowds will be sought after, which will bring more awareness of many amazing travel-worthy destinations. Money will flow into these lesser known destinations and create new micro economic opportunities. Self guided travel puts travelers in direct contact with local people – typically a good thing in normal times, as travel is meant to create learning, understanding, and culture exchange. Self guided travel is less expensive, leaving room for possibly more trips or more spending in destination, or both. Self guided travel also levels the playing field for local services and outfitters, to supply travelers with experiences that they find on their own.

As all self guided adventures are not created equal or meant to be the same, it is important for a traveler to ask questions, compare what is included, and evaluate the service provider. Do you want to do it all yourself? If so, you can and just make arrangements directly with in destination services. If you want some help but wish to retain certain things for your own effort, there are companies who sell slimmer versions of a trip for more DIY travel. Lastly, there are all inclusive self guided trips, where you can leave all of the logistics of organization up to the tour company. Then, all you have to do is show up and enjoy your time as you like each day, just you and your traveling party, the people you know.

Self guided travel typically keeps you in your own private party – alone, as a couple, as a family, or as a small group of friends – always the people you know. This level of limited exposure is what is attracting people most to self guided, as they think about travel in the post COVID-19 era. We are ready and waiting, and we hope the be a leader in helping people return to travel when they are ready!

Traveling with teenagers is an opportunity. It’s a chance to introduce young people to other cultures and experiences while they’re highly receptive, but also physically capable and independent. The adult organizing a tour, though, usually has questions. How will the teenagers’ love of sleeping in fit in with a busy day’s itinerary? Will a visit to a site of profound historical importance provoke eye rolls? We’ve put together some notes on our most youth-friendly tours to help the teenagers in your life travel the world while giving their parents and caregivers a chance to unwind, too.

First of all, remember it’s a good idea to get a teen’s input on what they’re looking for in a vacation. Since Pure Adventures tours are self-guided, we have a lot of leeway to customize the schedule to a traveler’s unique preferences. For active families, our multisport tours offer a great deal of variety and can be adjusted to include more of a favourite hobby: hiking, biking, horseback riding, kayaking, etc. This can be an excellent option if your teens enjoy a challenge and pushing for new achievements. Not all kids are sports junkies, obviously, so customizing a trip may be a matter of including a destination that interests them, adding special meals to the menu, or simply budgeting in unstructured time.

Whatever route you choose, travel at a young age can be life-changing. Here are our top picks for a memorable family vacation.

France Loire Royal Valley Cycling Tour

We recommend the Royal Valley cycling tour for its well-balanced characteristics. The cycling distances are approximately forty kilometres per day, a satisfying length that most occasional cyclists can handle. The terrain is flat to gently rolling, and enlivened by impressive castles. A duration of five nights and six days, and good pricing on mid-range lodging, make it easy to keep the budget manageable.

The tour begins in the town of Amboise. There the museum at Clos Lucé, where Leonardo Da Vinci spent the last years of his life, has a selection of engaging, interactive displays. Or book a kayak trip around Castle Chenonceau for a unique perspective on one of the region’s most beautiful chateaus. History can be a hard sell for kids, but you might get some traction by introducing them to the story of Joan of Arc, whose campaign is commemorated at spots throughout the Loire Valley. The Château de Blois, which this tour visits on Day Four, also has many tales of intrigue and assassination to fire the imagination.

Italy – Dolomites To Lake Garda Cycling Tour

Despite beginning in the impressive Dolomites mountain range, this is a relatively easy tour thanks to a route that runs mostly downhill along bike paths. Scenic small towns provide numerous points of interest, not to mention classic Italian cuisine highly appealing to adventurous foodies without being alienating to a fussy eater.

Day Two of the tour takes you past Lake Resia, where the eerie sight of a semi-submerged tower jutting from the water will fascinate visitors young and old. Cycling through medieval alleyways near beautiful Lake Garda is also an incredible sensory experience and a gift to any teen who hasn’t yet been exposed to Europe’s centuries of history.

Italy – Sicily Mt Etna & Aeolian Islands Hiking

If your young traveler has any interest in hiking, this is a very solid choice. Adventure seekers and budding naturalists will enjoy the bragging rights that come with climbing Mount Etna, the largest active volcano in Europe. Teens who appreciate novelty might also be intrigued to hear they’ll be shuttling between islands by hydrofoil. You can reassure them they’ll be seeing more than just pretty landscapes — hikes take you past steaming volcanic fumaroles and along the famous black beaches of the Island of Vulcano. Adults will probably be drawn to the Sicilian coffee and the ancient theatre of Taormina, which dates to the 3rd century BC.

Just be advised that the trails in this region isn’t easy, so everyone involved should be prepared for a physical challenge.

Italy – Sardinia Private Self Guided Bike Tour

Beaches! The Mediterranean waters are the big draw here, long sandy beaches complemented by high cliffs and Spanish watchtowers. You’ll visit tiny fishing villages, see pink flamingos gathered at ponds, and eat the freshest seafood possible. Some of the day’s rides are fairly challenging, but we can alter the itinerary for family looking to get ride distances down in favour of activities like enjoying gelato beachside.

Final Thoughts

Again, our approach to tourism allows for a high degree of personalization. With a few tweaks, one of our Vietnam tours could be a terrific all-ages cultural experience. The Croatia Bike & Kayak Tour might appeal to an athletically minded teen. We’ve also recently added two Ecuador/Galapagos tours to our roster of trips, sure to tempt to the animal lovers in your crew. Whatever the destination, if you’re curious about how to make a trip accessible and appealing just reach out with questions — call us at 800-960-2221, or email info@pure-adventures.com.

If you’re a bit of an Anglophile, you’re probably prepared for the most common UK terms that cause confusion to the North American speaker – across the pond chips are crisps, an aubergine is an eggplant, and pants are underwear. Many of the differences are small, charming, and create a real sense of place for the unaccustomed ear. A less well-known usage a traveler would do well to understand, however, is the difference between the North American and British usages of “walking” vs. “hiking.”

In North America, we tend to use “walk” in the same way we’d use “stroll” – a relatively easy excursion, usually along paved roads. We reserve the term “hike” for a more challenging trek through rugged terrain. The UK and the Republic of Ireland, however, use “walk” to describe any trip on foot, whether it’s to the corner shop or up the mountainside. Particularly if you’re talking to an older person, you may also hear the terms hillwalking, rambling, or fellwalking. When you get a hot tip at the pub about a lovely walk nearby, don’t set out in sandals until you’ve asked a few followup questions about length, difficulty, etc.

For instance, the tallest of the Connemara Mountains in Ireland, which we pass through on our Hiking the Western Way tour, reaches a maximum elevation of nearly 2,400 feet. Local guides may refer to the climb as a walk, or at most a “hard walk” or “hill walk.” All the same you’ll definitely want to bring hiking boots. Even less challenging stretches of trail may require appropriate preparations and footwear if the distances warrant. Especially at higher elevations, sunny weather can turn windy or misty on fairly short notice.

So how best to prepare for a day or more of walking, Irish or UK style? Hiking boots as opposed to shoes will give you the best ankle support and be suitable for the broadest range of conditions. If you don’t intend to carry a ton of gear, though, you won’t need the stiffest, heaviest variety available, backpacking boots. Some hikers even prefer lightweight, low-cut trail runners for the comfort and speed they offer. Either way a good fit is very important, so when shopping around make sure you try your intended pair on at the end of the day after your feet have had time to swell, and while you’re wearing the type of sock you intend to bring with you. Avoid choosing a pair so tight they chafe, as you should still have room to wiggle your toes. Speaking of socks, those need to fit well too in order to avoid blistering. Choose a thickness appropriate for the season – thick enough to give you some comfy cushioning, but not so thick as to be sweltering on a warm day. Merino wool is the go-to material for most hikers, sometimes blended with synthetics for durability and faster drying.

The standard outdoorsperson advice also applies to hiking in the UK, of course. Layering a t-shirt, fleece top, and jacket allows you to peel off as you warm up or stay toasty when the weather turns. A brimmed hat and sunscreen will probably leave you feeling less fatigued at the end of the day, and a spare pair of socks never hurt. Snacks, water, and a fully charged phone are reassuring additions to any pack. Just be aware that cell reception can be spotty on some stretches of trail, so it’s always best practice to download map data in advance or bring a good old-fashioned paper map along.

Lastly, if you’re referring to any guides written on hiking in the UK, you may want to make sure you’ve read them over in advance to make sure you haven’t glossed over any more unfamiliar terms (i.e. do you know a moor when you see one? Did you know a “permissive path” is a trail on private property which the landowner has granted access to?). If you travel with Pure Adventures, our local guides will bring you up to speed on anything you might need to know about trails or points of interest. Your job is to relax, enjoy the pastoral countryside and sweeping landscape, and then put your feet up after a long day’s ramble up hill and down dale.
