If you’re dreaming of a Spain bike tour that blends coastal beauty, rich culture, peaceful landscapes, and safe, car‑free cycling, a Basque Country bike tour should be at the top of your list. This region in northern Spain offers one of the most rewarding cycling experiences in Europe — especially when explored on its historic greenways, or Vías Verdes. Our new self‑guided bike tour from San Sebastián into the Basque interior reveals the region’s history, flavors, and traditions in a way few travelers ever experience.

Whether you’re wondering “Where should I ride in Spain?” or simply looking for a meaningful, immersive cycling holiday, this route delivers.

What Makes the Basque Country Perfect for a Self‑Guided Bike Tour

The Basque Country is unlike any other region in Spain. It has its own ancient language (Euskara), its own culinary traditions, and a landscape that shifts dramatically from rugged coastline to rolling green hills to forested valleys. For cyclists, it offers:

Car‑free greenways ideal for safe, relaxed riding

Gentle grades perfect for a wide range of abilities

Historic towns and villages rich with culture

World‑class food at every stop

A mix of coastal and inland scenery in a single route

This makes it one of the best answers to the question: Where should I ride in Spain?

The History Behind Spain’s Greenways

Spain’s Vías Verdes are one of the country’s most fascinating cycling resources. These greenways were originally railway lines built in the 19th and early 20th centuries to transport coal, iron, and goods across the Basque mountains. As industrial needs changed, many lines were abandoned — but instead of letting them disappear, Spain transformed them into multi‑use cycling and walking paths.

Today, these greenways offer:

Safe, car‑free cycling

Historic tunnels and viaducts

Scenic river valleys and forest corridors

A gentle, steady grade perfect for touring

Riding them feels like traveling through time — the old railway engineering still visible in the stonework, bridges, and tunnels that guide your way.

Starting in San Sebastián: A Coastal Icon

Your Basque Country bike tour begins in San Sebastián, one of Europe’s most beloved seaside cities. With its crescent beaches, Belle Époque architecture, and world‑famous food scene, it’s the perfect place to begin a cycling journey.

Before you even start pedaling, you’re immersed in Basque culture:

Pintxo bars lining the old town

Fishermen’s boats bobbing in the harbor

The scent of the sea drifting across La Concha Bay

From here, your self‑guided bike tour heads inland, leaving the coast behind and entering the quieter, greener heart of the region.

Cycling Through Navarre: Landscapes, Legends & the Camino de Santiago

As you ride into Navarre, the scenery shifts into rolling hills, medieval villages, and peaceful farmland. Navarre has long been a crossroads of culture — and nowhere is this more evident than on the Camino de Santiago.

Your route intersects sections of this ancient pilgrimage trail, where travelers have walked for over a thousand years. Sharing the path with Camino pilgrims adds a sense of connection and history to your ride — a reminder that travel here is part of something much larger.

Basque Culture: Deep Roots & Living Traditions

The Basque Country is one of Europe’s oldest cultural regions, and its traditions are woven into daily life. Along the route, you’ll encounter:

Baserri farmhouses, symbols of rural Basque heritage

Frontón courts, where locals play the fast‑paced sport of pelota

Village plazas, the social heart of every town

Local markets, filled with cheeses, peppers, cider, and seasonal produce

This is a region that values community, craftsmanship, and connection to the land — and you feel it in every stop, every conversation, every shared meal.

A Food Lover’s Dream: What to Eat on a Basque Country Bike Tour

Basque cuisine is legendary, and your Spain bike tour gives you a front‑row seat to its flavors. Expect to enjoy:

Pintxos – small, creative bites served in bars

Idiazabal cheese – smoky, rich, and often made by mountain shepherds

Bacalao al pil‑pil – a silky cod dish that’s pure Basque comfort

Txuleta – the region’s famous grilled steak

Gâteau Basque – a traditional almond‑cream pastry

Txakoli – a lightly sparkling white wine

Natural cider – poured from height to awaken its flavor

Food isn’t just part of the trip — it’s part of the culture.

Where You’ll Stay: Comfort & Local Charm

Each night, you’ll stay in comfortable double rooms with private bathrooms, in a curated mix of rural B&Bs and 3‑ and 4‑star hotels. These stays offer:

Authentic local character

Warm hospitality

Modern comforts

Peaceful settings perfect for unwinding after a day of riding

It’s the ideal blend of comfort and cultural immersion.

The Final Miles: A Quiet, Reflective Finish

As your journey continues inland, the scenery opens into broad valleys and tranquil countryside. It’s a peaceful, reflective end to a route that has carried you from the sea to the Basque interior — through greenways, historic towns, and landscapes shaped by centuries of tradition.

By the time you reach your final stop, you’ll have experienced a meaningful cross‑section of Basque Country: its flavors, its history, its warm hospitality, and the steady rhythm of car‑free cycling that makes this region such a joy to explore.

Granada is an enchanting place to kick of a tour of Andalusia. With its beautiful winding streets and whitewashed homes built along the slopes of of the Sierra Nevada foothills, it boasts a vibrant contemporary culture to match its historical grandeur. The legacy of the Muslim emirs who ruled the Iberian Peninsula centuries ago is alive today in Granada’s public baths and teahouses, and the Alhambra stands as the greatest example of Moorish architecture in all Europe. Literally translating as “the red castle” in Arabic, the Alhambra’s pale red walls rise dramatically from thickly wooded hills above the city.

Both our Granada to Cordoba Cycling Tour and Andalusia Alpujarra Hiking Tour start in Granada, and we highly recommend putting the Alhambra at the top of your list of must-dos. You don’t need to be a history buff to appreciate the elegance of the castle’s mesmerizing carved ceilings and intricate mosaics, but the history is as rich as the aesthetics suggest. The oldest section of the palace complex is the Alcazaba, constructed in the late 9th century atop the ruins of earlier Roman buildings. Entrance to the Alcazaba is included in the general admission fee, and the Torre de la Vela watchtower can be climbed. It rewards the viewer with a grandiose view of the Sierra Nevadas and the rooftops of Granada.

The most sophisticated architectural achievements were added to the Alhambra in the 13th and 14th centuries, when the ruling Nasrid dynasty renovated and expanded upon the existing site. The Palacios Nazaríes offers the finest examples of this era. Here you’ll find wooden ceilings carved into hypnotic geometric patterns and grand courtyards fit for an emir. Don’t miss the Patio de Los Leones, with its rich marble galleries and regal carved fountain.

The Islamic imprint is what gives the Alhambra its distinctive character, but the shifting balance of power gives it further historical weight. In 1492 the Christian Reconquista brought about the fall of the Nasrid dynasty, and the Alhambra became the home of the royal court of the Catholic Monarchs Ferdinand and Isabella. Visit the Salón de los Embajadores, where the newly installed rulers gave royal assent for Columbus’ fateful mission to the New World, and take a moment to ponder how different the world might look had that meeting gone differently. It’s also well worth checking out the Palacio de Carlos V as a study in contrasts. Structurally distinct from the rest of the site, this is a show-stopping example Renaissance architecture. It’s home to the Museo de la Alhambra and Museo de Bellas Artes. The former contains many artifacts from the Nasrid era, and the latter houses Grenadine painting and sculpture from the fifteenth century onward.

Just east of the palacios, the Generalife was reserved as the pleasure grounds for the ruling class, and rewards the visitor with peaceful gardens and fountains. Note that here, due to a combination of historical neglect and changing tastes, the restoration is not as faithful to the original design as other sections of the Alhambra. Despite the caveat, we can count ourselves lucky so much of the site is as well-preserved as it is – in the 19th century Napoleon’s troops occupied the Alhambra, and upon retreat attempted to blow up several towers.

With such a rich and varied history, it’s no surprise the Alhambra was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984. That also makes it one of the most popular attractions in Spain, so advance tickets are highly recommended. You can purchase yours up to three months in advance here. Your ticket will come with a scheduled timeslot, so it’s important to arrive on promptly. If you prefer a night visit evening tours are available and make for a very evocative atmosphere. As always, we can help customize a trip to your unique tastes – feel free to contact us at 1-800-960-2221 with questions about the Alhambra, Andalusia, and beyond.

Hands down we have THE best tour guides in the industry. We rely on them to be our eyes and ears on each of our biking and hiking tours across the globe. Guiding, in itself, is mentally and physically challenging. Working hard in extreme temperatures – making sure our clients have the best experience possible, needless to say Pure Adventures wouldn’t exist without our dedicated guides.

Nora & Angel guide our tours in Barcelona. With its wealth of art, culture and countryside…(and wine, don’t forget the wine) – it’s an incredible place to walk and ride, creating unique experiences with landscapes dominated by vineyards and wineries – did we mention the wine? We asked Nora & Angel where they like to kick back after a hard day on the Barcelona trails. Here’s what they said.

Grapes have been grown in the La Rioja region for thousands of years. First carefully tended to and crafted by monks as early as 873, Rioja wines have a fascinating heritage, dating back to the Phoenicians and the Celtiberians. According to VinePair.com, it’s the most famous wine on the American market, it’s fruitiness, structure and tannins making it similar to Cabernet Sauvignon. The strawberry-ish Tempranillo is the dominant grape, but you know that fruitiness we were just talking about that? You can thank Garnacha, Mazuelo or Graciano for that. Often called “Spain in a glass”, a wine this rich in history is something definitely worth toasting. Here are five reasons to celebrate the Rioja region and this multi-faceted vino.

The Rioja region hosts a wine fight. Yes, we said wine fight.

Each June 29, thousands of people travel to the heart of the Rioja region for the Haro Wine Festival. The tiny town of Haro comes alive with festivities, the most famous of all is the La Batalla de Vino de Haro, the Wine Fight. Festival goers climb to the top of a mountain 3 miles away for a wine-fuelled party with wine filled water guns, sprayer trucks, buckets of wine and backpack wine sprayers.

Drink your Rioja now, or cellar to celebrate later

There are four classifications of Rioja: Rioja, Crianza, Reserva and Gran Reserva. Ranging from Riojas, which may have been aged for only a few months to Gran Reservas, Riojas made in exceptional growing years. Those younger Riojas can be enjoyed right away (say, after a hard bike ride), whereas you can save a Gran Reservas for several years and bring out for a special occasion. And while those nifty wine bicycle holders are fun to look at, we don’t recommend tucking a Gran Reservas in there (a Rioja should be just fine though).

You can enjoy a Rioja Wine of the Year at the fraction of the price

If you’re wondering just how good a Rioja can be, the Cune Rioja Imperial Gran Reserva 2004 was named Wine Spectator’s Wine of the Year in 2013. This Rioja can be picked up for only $63 a bottle. whereas the 2015 wine of the year is $195 a bottle.

Because Rioja is more than just fabulous red wines

Here’s a fun Rioja fact we bet you didn’t know! The region produces those world famous oaky and fruity reds, but also unoaked white wines similar in taste to albarino and verdejo. The Telegraph names the maturana tinto (made from the Mazuelo grape) as a wine to discover this year.

The Rioja’s youthful update is worth raising a glass to

Remember how we said that the Rioja is thousands of years old? Recently the Regulatory Council for the La Rioja Denomination of Origin updated the labels and logo for the Rioja with the aim of attracting younger connoisseurs.

Pure Adventures’ newest Spain bike tour takes cyclists on a scenic and delicious escape throughout the La Rioja region of Spain.
Spain continues to be one of Pure Adventures’ most popular cycling destinations, with tours offering flat to rolling countryside, charming villages, vineyards, castles, Roman history, and museums. Majorca (Mallorca in Spanish) is the largest of the Balearic Islands, its 310 mile long coastline a draw for millions of sun worshipers every year. But there’s more to Majorca than beaches.

Ensaimadas

Traditionally filled with ‘cabello de ángel’ (pumpkin strands in syrup), ensaimadas are a sweet and airy pastry made with eggs, flour, butter and sugar. Travelers can find ensaimadas in virtually every cafe on Majorca, with fillings and toppings ranging from a dusting of powdered sugar to sinfully sweet apricot preserves and whipping cream.

Caves

Chamber of Purgatory. Chamber of Hell. We wonder if it’s true that Jules Verne was inspired by the Cuevas de Artà to write Journey to the Center of the Earth. Occupying a stretch of land closing Canyamel Bay to the north, these ancient caves were formed by seawater erosion with some interior chambers rising nearly 151 feet. A unique feature of the caves is the Chamber of Flags, where three towering columns each emit a different tone when struck by your tour guide.

Mountains

The Sierra de Tramontana forms the northern backbone of the Majorca. In 2011, this mountain range was awarded World Heritage Status by UNESCO. Summiting Puig de Massanella, the mountain’s second highest peak, is a popular excursion – are you up for the challenge of climbing 4,475 feet?

Museums and monuments

Majorca’s seafaring history and ecological significance lends itself to rich cultural experiences. While on Majorca, visit the Museo de Mallorca, housed in a 16th-century mansion popularly known as “Casa de la Gran Cristiana” and the Balearic Museum of Natural Sciences and Botanical Garden, surrounded by hundreds of plant species from the Balearic and Canary Islands.

Wine

You can’t visit Spain without enjoying the wine, but did you know that until recently, most of the wine drunk on Majorca was imported from the mainland? The island’s abundant almond crops left little room for vineyards, but a group of winemakers came together in the 1990s and dedicated themselves to better growing methods, new varieties and improvements in wine production. Today, those vineyards throughout Majorca open their doors to wine enthusiasts to enjoy reds, whites and sparkling wines that cannot be found elsewhere in the world.

Pure Adventures offers two unique cycling tours in Majorca – a challenging self-guided road cycling trip ideal for bike clubs and triathletes and a more leisurely hybrid self-guided cycling vacation package that takes in Majorca’s postcard perfect countryside.
Pure Adventures self-guided cycling tours allow travelers the opportunity to experience a region’s cuisine and restaurants at their own pace and taste, unlike group tours that may choose dining options for you. With a culture rich in gastronomy and Spain offers unrivaled restaurant choices – and sometimes it is hard to know where to go! With local expert and Pure Adventures guide Bo Lohmann residing in Girona, the guess-work of picking the perfect place for a meal is eliminated – Bo has dined at many of the top restaurants.

Foodies have long regarded El Celler de Can Roca as the best restaurant in all of Girona, and year after year, it has ranked as one of the top 50 restaurants in the world by Forbes, Trip Advisor and Restaurant magazine. Waiting lists to dine at El Celler de Can Roca are often a year long – rarely can lucky diners secure an invitation to share a meal with friends who have been on a waiting list! Bo recently dined at El Celler de Can Roca and offers an exclusive Q&A with Pure Adventures about this celebrated Spanish restaurant.

What prompted you to go there?

With Celler de Can Roca’s reputation as one of the best restaurants in the world, dining there is something that I wanted to try once – especially since it is right where we live in Girona. It was a special occasion dinner with my wife, and we made the reservations 12 months in advance.

What do locals say about the food?

It depends. Locals do go here as it’s become very hard to get a reservation – up to 1 year waiting list although they changed the booking system. In spite of the recession as Spaniards keep spending money in food, going out and other such things, but Celler de Can Roca attracts more travelers than it does local residents.

What was your favorite experience of the night?

The staff gave us a tour through the kitchen and showed us the different work rooms and explained some of the machines for their molecular cooking process. Then one of the Roca brothers himself showed us the cellar! Some of the courses (there were 20 in the menu we selected) were very good?

What was the most memorable dish? Most forgettable dish?

Most memorable – the Prawn. Most forgettable – Calçots. This is because Calçots is a traditional Catalan food that’s best enjoyed outdoors as it’s a meal with bbq’d onions and meat – it gets filthy with everyone dirty and black faces. A restaurant – and especially in a restaurant like this one – is clearly not the right place for it. The two meat dishes as well were forgettable.

What menu did you choose? Would you have chosen differently?

You can choose between the Classic Menu and the Festival menu (more courses. see attached picture), that’s it. We chose the Festival menu to try it all including “maridatge” meaning that you get to try a different wine with each course. It took us about 40 minutes to eat ourselves through the appetizers! After about 2 hours and before finishing the last starters we began feeling tired and realized that this may be the experience of a lifetime but we are not food lovers enough or just incapable to appreciate high cuisine enough.

Would you tell clients to eat at El Celler de Can Roca?

Only if they are gourmets. I could recommend at least 5 other restaurants where they spend less and will enjoy a meal they won’t forget. Personally, I think it’s more an event than a meal. My conclusion is – you can have a fantastic meal in many other places in Girona for a small fraction of the money you spend at this restaurant. I can compare it from other high-standard restaurants in the area because I’m trying them for our tours and customers (I would mention La Plaça in Madremanya and Sa Punta in Platja de Pals for example). It’s not a disappointment or regretting to have spent an important amount of money. Maybe I expected more or maybe I expected the experience to be more memorable after almost 1 year waiting for the meal. I think it’s become some sort of celebrity thing and a place where you should go if you get the chance, no matter how and that it has to be good.

Curious about dining at El Celler de Can Roca? Here are our favorite along-the-way trails on our new tours.

Campanet, Mallorca
Mallorca is a favorite destination for both recreational cyclists and amateur road cycling athletes, namely for the easy cycling along dedicated paved lanes. However, we urge you to leave the road bike behind and climb aboard one of our hybrid bikes to explore the woods outside of Campanet. This 43 kilometer cycling trail takes you beneath the canopy of ancient pine, olive, almond and oak trees all the way to the the foothill village of Campanet. Once in Campanet, a visit to the Coves de Campanet round out a magical day of travel.

Descending into the foothills of the Sierra de la Alfaguara
Descending into Olivares, the plains and foothills surrounding the Alfaguara Mountains are breathtaking. This area, once destroyed by forestry and wildfires, has been carefully restored and full of wildlife including wild boar and goats. The Sierra Nevada forms an impressive backdrop to this challenging off-road ride. Mountain bikes or heavier hybrids recommended.

The Alpujarra is a region of mountain villages to the south of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, with sheltered valleys and gorges running down towards the Mediterranean Sea. The region, declared a National Park and Nature Reserve is home to an authentic treasure of flora and fauna, making it the perfect place to hike! Trails throughout the region consist of unpopulated singletrack – ideal for mountain bikers.

Since the Middle Ages, pilgrims from all over Europe were attracted by the grave of the apostle James at Santiago de Compostela at the far North-Western tip of Spain. Today, both hikers and cyclists from around the world follow the pilgrims trail and are impressed by the experience, whether from a spiritual, cultural or sportive point of view. Pure Adventures follows the last 300 kilometers of this historic trail system.

A visit to Jerez is part of our White Villages of Andalusia tour, and the route we travel to this quiet village and it’s famous equestrian school takes you past vibrant Andalusian farmlands. Quiet country roads are ideal for side-by-side cycling and of course, soaking in the sights.
