Day 1 - SundayOrientation & Carefree Ride: 25+ mi

This morning, we meet for a bike set up and final trip review, then you are off and riding. This ride is a combination of city streets with bike lanes as you make your way north to the edge of the city at desert’s edge. When you arrive at your lodging you will find you luggage waiting for you. The BnB we recommend is a lovely location just off the main drag in the western town of Cave Creek. The quiet and calm will be your oasis in the warm desert days and cool evening air!

Note: We recommend arrival to Scottsdale the night before. Ask us for pre-night lodging recommendations, we have suggestions to facilitate the ride today.

Meals: on your own
Distance: 25+ miles, + 2000
Overnight: Cave Creek or Carefree

Day 2Into the Sonoran Desert: 45+ mi

Today’s ride takes you northeast into the wild Sonoran Desert to a surprise you may not expect: a lake! In a few brief pedal strokes, you will find yourself away from the sounds of civilization, ascending over a cactus-laden hill into a wide ravine shadowed by towering giant saguaros. Watch out for the Whiptailed lizards as they scamper off the roadside as you negotiate the high speed descents. What goes down, must go up! To go all the way to the lake – and back – you need to be a fit and experienced cyclist. Once you arrive at the lake, head to Rattlesnake Cove for a refreshing swim or simply refuel at the Marina shop. If you still crave burning thighs and breaths that come in gasps, not a problem!

A more moderate ride is available today too over other roads. This is a loop ride today that can be custom to your needs – when planned in advance. Save some energy though, because tonight is a good one to let loose with the cowboys in Cave Creek, post-ride.

Meals: breakfast normally included (TBC) other meals on own
Distance: 45 miles, + 5084 / – 5081 ft
Overnight: Cave Creek or Carefree

Day 3East to the Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation & Salt River: 48+ mi

Today it is time for a change of scenery, so leave your luggage for us to transfer and get ready for a great 1-way ride that is a net loss of over 1,000 feet in elevation! Once you crest the pass on Dynamite and start your 9-mile hill descent, you will be gazing out across over 70-miles of desert, the Verde River Valley and Tonto National Forest. Enjoy an extended ride and even a picnic break in McDowell Mountain Park or simply continue on to the Fort McDowell Yavapai Indian Reservation; the choice is yours! After a short windswept 8 mile grind on the Beeline Highway (busy road with very wide shoulder often used by cyclists) a big smile will come across your face as you descend to the Salt River at the base of the 1000-ft Bulldog Cliffs. Nestled in the Tonto National Forest, your home for the next 2 nights is a historic ranch.

Meals: breakfast normally included (TBC) other meals on own
Distance: 48+ miles, + 2242 / – 3258 ft
Overnight: Saguaro Lake

Day 4Creeks, Cliffs and Cactus: 30+ mi

Get ready for the most spectacular scenery of the trip! Here we will ride along the Salt River beneath towering rhyolite cliffs and past cactus-studded canyons. The soft greenery and plentiful water attract many animals who make their homes here, including beaver, otters, loons, eagles, turkey vultures and bobcats. The Salt River flows from its headwaters in the White Mountains of Eastern Arizona and rushes along through the high elevations until it winds its way into the lower arid desert. Here, the riparian ecosystem created by the mellow flow of the Salt is an indispensable oasis. It is home to many plant & animal species, as well as a perennial slash of lush green across the desert brown of the surrounding landscape. Keep your eye out for the wild horses that still roam this range and steel your legs for the short but punchy climbs. Extend your ride for a swim in the river or hit the beach at the nearby lake. If you need some time off the bike, have a seat on a kayak or one of the ranch’s horses.

Meals: breakfast included, other meals on own (dinner can be delivered)
Distance: 30+ miles, + 2561 / – 2561 ft
Overnight: Saguaro Lake

Day 5Departure Day

Have a leisurely morning with breakfast before we arrive to collect you and your bike for transfer back to Scottsdale. Airport transfers are possible; please inquire at time of booking.

Meals: breakfast included, other meals on own

Couple Traveller

We came out to Arizona while it was snowing back at home, so this was a heavenly get away for us. The weather was perfect and we loved every one of the rides that Pure Adventures coordinated for us. It was super slick – maps and routes were loaded to our phones, our suitcases moved place to place for us, pretty scenery & sunsets, good dining, and we really enjoyed the freedom and flexibility with this type of tour. We want to look at some of your trips to Europe, next!!!
