Need to Know:
Your tour starts with your arrival to the beautiful city of Vienna. We suggest arriving a night early so that you can explore this incredible city before beginning your tour. To start, take a short connector train to Breclav (just across the Czech border) to meet our contact person. You will then be driven to your hotel in Valtice, where you will have an orientation and receive all necessary materials for cycling, including your road book and bike. The rest of the day may be enjoyed by sightseeing and dinner on own. In the town square there is a beautiful church and former Lichtenstein family chateau. The chateau’s wine cellar is a great place to taste some wines!
You will start your biking tour in the Lednice-Valtice area (UNESCO World Heritage Site), where you will ride through forest and field trails. This area is graced by two magnificent chateaus and numerous “follies” – romantic structures set beautifully into the surrounding landscape, including an Arc de Triomphe! A paved road with little traffic then leads you to Pavlov, with an archaeological museum stretched over a mammoth hunters’ site from the Stone Ages. Continue on to Mikulov, with its imposing castle, historic square, the tomb of the Dietrichstein family, as well as the synagogue and Jewish Cemetery, where the oldest tombstones date back to 1605.
Distance: 38 km / 24 mi
Highlights: Lednice-Valtice UNESCO area, Pavlov museum, Mikulov historic centre
Morning starts with a transfer by van from Mikulov to Znojmo. Start at the historical royal town lookout, where the most naturally scenic part of the trip begins. The National Park Podyji, the river canyon and surround vistas of splendor will reward you for enduring the challenging, hilly terrain. The last remnants of the Iron Curtain found in the village of Cizov are one of the highlights here. The other notable highlight is the almost fairy tale-like castle of Vranov, perched high on a cliff above the riverbed.
Distance: 41 km / 25 mi
Highlights: National Park Podyji, Cizov, Vranov castle
Overnight: Vranov nad Dyji
From Vranov we skim the Austrian border through the village of Safov. Here we find a quaint old Jewish cemetery, then past a Renaissance chateau in Uhercice, and along fields dotted by pre-WWII bunkers. After arrival to Slavonice, a forgotten gem with sgraffito houses, we travel by local train to the town of Telc, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its perfectly preserved Renaissance town center.
Distance: 48 km / 30 mi
Highlights: Safov historical points of interest, Telc UNESCO Site
Today you will cycle through the Czech/Moravian Highlands, through fields and forests. A unique stop along the way is a memorial in Kostelni Myslovaof, for a Jewish painter named Frantisek Moritz Nagl. He died in an Auschwitz extermination camp in Poland but loved to paint in the surrounding landscape here. The border areas have a complicated yet modern history. Today’s destination is the old town of Jindrichuv Hradec, which contains the third largest castle complex in the Czech Republic.
Distance: 43 km / 27 mi
Highlights: Highlands cycling, memorial, historical stops & castle
Overnight: Jindrichuv Hradec
Start your day by taking in the historic town of Jindrichuv Hradec, with its regional museum featuring the largest mechanical nativity scene in the world. Begin cycling through the mosaic of ponds, woods and meadows of the Bohemia Lake District, as you make your way to the town of Trebon, a medieval city whose walls are still largely intact. The only way to enter the historical core is through a gate in the old fortifications, after crossing a moat that is a part of a unique water regulation system dating back to the 16th century.
Distance: 30 km / 19 mi
Highlights: Jindrichuv Hradec & medieval Trebon
The last day of cycling leads you through hilly terrain to the jewel of South Bohemia, the town of Cesky Krumlov (a UNESCO Heritage Site), situated on the banks of the meandering Vltava River. The old town is well-preserved and offers an unparalleled ensemble of Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque structures. Among the attractions are the second largest castle complex in the Czech Republic and the oldest working Baroque theater in Europe. Overnight in Cesky Krumlov, with dinner on your own. We suggest a medieval tavern with an open fire roasting pit and a cold Pilsner Urquell or an “original” Budvar or Budweiser!
Distance: 63 km / 39 mi
Highlights: Cesky Krumlov UNESCO Site
Overnight: Cesky Krumlov
The recommended program gives you ample time to enjoy all that Cesky Krumlov has to offer within one day, with an optional side trip to see the Baroque folk architecture in Holasovice. Then, take a late afternoon transfer by bus from Cesky Krumlov to Prague. Additional stays in lovely Prague can be arranged and we are happy to assist. Just ask us and we can coordinate for you and provide you with our best tips!

We’ve done several Pure Adventures Self Guided biking adventures. This ranked at the top for local organizational details, accommodations, scenic backcountry bike paths and roads, history and itinerary. I would highly recommend Chez Republic 8 Day Vienna-Prague!!!!
The hotels were all great, a little fancier than what we would book ourselves. Staff were always excellent, especially at the smaller hotels along the way. The breakfasts were fantastic. Loren and team were very helpful in organizing our trip.
We were on a self guided tour but found many excellent dining options. We used many of the recommendations provided by the self guided tour, all were excellent.
