Germany – Prague to Dresden Greenways Bike Tour

(4 Reviews)

Self-Guided Prague to Dresden Bike Tour: Elbe River bike tour from Prague to Dresden follows the river on a relatively moderate course between 2 countries; the Czech Republic and Germany. History and cycling mix on this seven-day, self-guided tour of the Czech Republic and Dresden, Germany. Pure Adventures Tours combines local knowledge and customs, architecture, and culture to bring cycling enthusiasts an all-inclusive cycling adventure through a culturally-significant region. Marked cycling paths and paved backroads make this route easy to follow. Start by cycling to Melnik, the center of winemaking in Bohemia. Continue by biking through the fertile countryside, through Litomerice with its Gothic houses. The most impressive part of the tour is the region called Czech and Saxon Switzerland, where you bike along a steep-sided river valley with fantastic sandstone formations towering above. In Germany, the bicycle trails are a joy to follow and lead you to Dresden. While experiencing excellent food, beer, and cultural tours, the cycling tour ends in Dresden – a city for its mainly baroque, historical part of the city, Dresden is called the Elbe Florence.

Day 2Prague to Melnik: 58-70 km / 35-42 mi

Today you begin your cycling tour! Starting with a small ascent, today’s route follows a nice trail to the heart of the Czech wine region – the town of Melnik. This is a good warm-up ride day. Just before leaving Prague, you will pass the Troja Baroque Castle and then continue north to the bank of the Vltava River. The river cuts into the ground here, creating interesting rock formations and deep valleys. Visits of castles in Nelahozeves or Veltrusy are the biggest highlights of this day. Your day finishes in the old wine town of Melnik, located at the confluence of the Vltava and Elbe Rivers. Be sure to enjoy a glass of good wine tonight!

Meals: breakfast
Distance: 58-70 km / 35-42 mi, +271/-240m
Highlights: Vltava River cycling, castles and palaces

Day 3Melnik to Litomerice: 50 km / 30 mi

After a hearty breakfast, we embark on our cycling tour, leaving Prague behind and entering in the peaceful Elbe region. This region is one of the most rich and fertile regions in the Czech Republic! Due to the confluence of the Vltava and Elbe Rivers, the river gains on its mightiness and strength and slowly becomes a European major waterway. After passing the beautiful Libechov Castle, arrive to the town of Roudnice nad Labem, where you have a chance to admire an old church and a castle. The most impressive stop on today’s stage is the massive 18th centurey Terezin Fortress, which illustrates military architecture of that time. This era was a time in history filled with much hatred and cruelty. Your day’s ride finishes in the charming old town of Litomerice, which is also considered a spiritual center of this region.

Meals: breakfast
Distance: 50 km / 30 mi, +53/-112m
Highlights: preserved fortress town, palaces, memorial & other historical sites

Day 4Litomerice to Decin: 51 km / 32 mi

The third day of self-guided cycling from Prague to Dresden allows for exploration of the romantic countryside of the Czech Middle Mountains. Even though this region is very hilly, you will mostly follow the banks of the Elbe River, surrounded by hills with several historical ruins. This former volcanic region has always offered the ideal terrain for a castle or fortress, many of which have not been preserved until recently. The magnificent Strekov Castle, which was built on top of a steep rock cliff, is considered one of the most romantic castles in the Czech Republic! After a more strenuous climb, you are rewarded by a magnificent view from its walls; be sure to take some time here. The final point of today’s cycling is at the Northern Gate of the Czech Republic in the town of Decin, known for its deep valleys and rock formations..

Meals: breakfast
Distance: 51 km / 32 mi, +136/-156m
Highlights: river riding & ruins
Overnight: Decin

Day 5Decin to Bad Schandau: 25 km / 16 mi

Today is an easy day in terms of length and you will say goodbye to the Czech Republic and cycle to the German border and on to Bad Schandau. Today’s ride goes through the incredible landscape of the Bohemian / Saxon Switzerland area, following the forested river valley through the incredible sandstone formations of the Bohemian Switzerland area. Over millions of years the river Elbe has carved intricate formations in the sandstone of the area. The area is known as Bohemian Switzerland in the Czech Republic and Saxon Switzerland in Germany. You will feel like you are in the mountains as you make your way to the historic spa and wellness town of Bad Schandau.

Meals: breakfast
Distance: 25 km / 16 mi, +234/-259m
Highlights: Bohemian / Saxon Switzerland landscape, valley riding
Overnight: Bad Schandau

Day 6Bad Schandau to Dresden: 48 km / 29 miles

Today is packed with historical sights! Shortly after leaving Bad Schandau you will see the very imposing-looking Königstein Fortress. Cycling past the curve, a beautiful rock formation and rock bridge will come into view, along with Bastei Ruin – the region’s massive rock formations. There is an optional tour of the town, which is rich magnificent views and history. This is highly recommended; please inquire for details and rates. As you continue a couple of kilometers down the road through beautiful panoramic views, you reach the Dresden Valley. This area boasts many beautiful castles, as well as museums of famous musicians, such as Karl Maria Weber or Richard Wagner, who both used to compose in this area. This was our second trip with Pure Adventures. We love the self guided trip. Thomas did our orientation, as he did with our first trip. The orientation is done carefully to be sure we understand the provided support, maps, etc. Also Thomas checks to be sure the bikes are adjusted and functioning properly. But this has always been easy to understand, and I have not had any troubles. We enjoy the provided hotels as they have been in good locations either near the center of town or in interesting areas. Also, Pure Adventures was wonderful in adjusting our schedule to allow a lay over day in order to allow us to explore further the National Parks along the Czech and German border. For my daughter, she later expressed that this was her favorite part of the visit.

Easy to follow the route guide, and if I made a mistake, the GPS set me straight. We added a day at each end of the trip, and the staff easily accommodated our request. Thanks again for another great trip!

Petra was great and gave us such a positive impression and a great welcome. I was so impressed with the quality of the breakfasts. All were so much better than you get in the US. Most were just out of this world wonderful! The quality of the hotels varied. Most were excellent but a few were only adequate.

After touring Belgium a couple of years ago, this was our second bike trip organized by Pure Adventures. This time, the bikes were even better equipped, the route guides clearly written and the GPS programmed to get us each day to our destination even if we’d closed our eyes. (Almost) With one exception, in Litomerice, the hotels were quiet, comfortable and clean, and it was always a welcome sight at the end of the day to find our luggage waiting for us. Each hotel served breakfast that sustained us through the morning ride. The route was interesting, not too demanding and easy to follow, even in the two or three places where construction activities required a detour. We can’t recommend Pure Adventure tours highly enough. We’re already looking forward to our next one.
