Spain – El Camino de Santiago STAGE 1: Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port to Logroño

0

In many ways, travel is like a pilgrimage. It takes a certain mindset, makes you more aware of your values and beliefs, and often “creates a new you.” For the hiking-oriented adventurer, why not create your own pilgrimage with Pure Adventures Tours and our 10-day hiking vacation across one of the world’s oldest pilgrimage routes? This tour takes you over the Camino de Santiago de Compostela, which has brought pilgrims worldwide to the grave of the Apostle James. The pilgrimage path is a long journey and can be strenuous even with some good training. We break up the journey into 5 stages so you can do them in succession as you have time. With opportunities to rest, reflect and view the vast expanse of countryside, the St. James Trail was declared the first European Culture Route in 1987. Since then, hikers have followed the route of scallop shell-shaped Galician stones to Santiago.

Itinerary

Day 1Arrival to Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port

On arrival, be sure to get you Pilgrim’s passport or “La Credencial,” which you will need to have stamped daily at a “refugio,” church or town hall in order to receive the “Compostela” in Santiago. An essential stop on the way to Santiago, Saint-Jean seduces you with its old stone ramparts and citadel of the XV century, featuring traditional Basque architecture and surrounding houses.

Overnight: Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port

Day 2Walk Roncesvalles: 25 km / 16 mi

Today you have a hard and challenging walk, crossing the Pyrenees over three mountain passes on the Napoleon Route. The route from St Jean is very steep and climbs from 200 meters above sea level to just above 1,400 meters, then goes right back down again into Roncesvalles at 900 meters, which can be hard on your knees and shins. You will be walking on a paved road in France and dirt roads/trails on the Spanish side.

Note: It is a rather hard first day crossing the Pyrenees. If you wish to start with shorter and easier walks, you may prefer to split this walk into two: walk 14 km on the first day and take return transfer to SJPP (additional supplement). On the second day, transfer in the morning and finish the remaining walk to Roncesvalles.

Meals: breakfast
Distance: 25 km / 16 mi, 7-8 hrs
Overnight: Roncesvalles

Day 3Walk to Akeretta: 28 km / 17 mi

Down the hills towards Pamplona, this is a beautiful hike through Basque forests and agricultural land. Two moderate climbs and then your final descent to Zubiri. It is a long walk but it is the better option because of the great hotel in Akeretta (also offers more time for visits in Pamplona tomorrow). This charming hotel is a traditional stone house and parts of the movie “The Way” were even filmed here.

Optional: Walk only to Zubiri (22 km).

Meals: breakfast
Distance: 28 km / 17 mi, 8 hrs
Overnight: Akeretta

Day 4Walk to Pamplona: 14 km / 9 mi

Begin today’s journey with a fairly short and moderate hike to the capital of the Navarra region and one of the five cities on the Camino Francés: Pamplona! Today’s route is more urban than the last two days, quickly passing into the suburbs of Pamplona. Out of the 5 capitals on the Camino Francés, this one is widely considered the nicest and easiest for the pilgrim.

Meals: breakfast
Distance: 14 km / 9 mi, 3-4 hrs
Overnight: Pamplona

Day 5Walk to Puente la Reina: 19 km / 12 mi

Today you have a long hike with one major climb up to the Alto de Perdon, a mythical point on the Camino. The route out of Pamplona is the best marked of any of the cities and it passes the university campus where they have a pilgrim’s office to have your pilgrim’s passport stamped. We also recommend a small detour to visit the beautiful church of Santa Maria de Eunate, from Muruzabal.

Meals: breakfast
Distance: 19 km / 12 mi, 5 hrs
Overnight: Puente la Reina

Day 6Walk to Estella: 19 km / 12 mi

The route closely follows the N11 without much difficulty. Highlights include the Roman bridge and road as well as the monumental site of Cirauqui in Cirauqui-Zirauki

Meals: breakfast
Distance: 19 km / 12 mi, 5 hrs
Overnight: Estella

Day 7Walk to Los Arcos: 21 km/ 13 mi

Solitude is what defines this next stage, as well as the “Fuente del Vino” (wine fountain.) You should carry a cup in case the machine doesn’t work. The fountain is located next to the monastery of Irache. Santa María la Real de Irache was a Benedictine monastery and is located in the town of Ayegui, Navarre, Spain. It dates back to the eighth century but the surviving buildings are somewhat more recent. Stop a moment to take in your ancient surroundings!

Meals: breakfast
Distance: 21 km/ 13 mi, 5-6 hrs
Overnight: Los Arcos

Day 8Walk to Viana: 18 km / 11 mi

Today you will have a very hilly day, containing many ups and downs; it is much harder than it will appear on the map. There are very deep, steep ravines between Sansol and Torres del Rio, and it remains hilly for a while afterwards.

Note: This walk can be combined with Day 9.

Meals: breakfast
Distance: 18 km / 11 mi, 5 hrs
Overnight: Viana

Day 9 Walk to Logroño: 10 km / 6 mi

Today it is fairly obvious that we are getting closer to a large city. There can be the sound of traffic from the motorway and at times you have to cross it on a footpath and go under it by way of underpasses. However, you are reaching the capital of La Rioja: Logroño! After a good night’s rest here, tomorrow is your departure day or continue on to the next stage. Congratulations on finishing Stage 1!

Meals: breakfast
Distance: 10 km / 6 mi, 3 hrs
Overnight: Logroño
