If you’re new to wine Tasting or need a refresher, click here to read our “Wine Tasting 101” post.

Winemaking is woven into the culture of many of the countries we visit with Pure Adventures. If you’re a wine lover on a self-guided tour, you might drop in on favourite vineyard to see how the grapes are grown and the wine is made. Along the way you may discover a unique local producer you’ve never heard of, or take advantage of a tasting day to explore the nuances of the terroir. A little advance research can help you identify must-trys along your route, so we’ve compiled a list of regionally famous wine varietals to keep an eye out for next time you find yourself in wine country.

Germany – Riesling

Riesling is Germany’s signature varietal — the first recorded reference to Riesling comes from the 15th century, when it became the drink of choice for German nobility. Today it accounts for nearly a quarter of the nation’s total wine production. Rieslings are typically low in alcohol, high in acidity, and prized for their refreshing crispness. Somewhat unusually for a white wine, they can age well. Older Rieslings develop a signature petroleum smell, which might sound unappetizing but is natural and prized as part of the grape’s unique profile. They range from sweet to bone-dry depending on the terroir. Because of the local climate, German Rieslings tend towards the dry side. They pair particularly well with spicy food because the acidity has a way of cleansing the palate. See this post by Wine Folly to learn more about Riesling varieties.

Austria – Grüner Veltliner

Austria’s favorite grape is Grüner Veltliner, or Grüner for short. This wonderful white is often considered one the world’s best “food wines.” Again thanks to its high acidity it can hold its own even against red meat or a spicy plate of Vietnamese. The availability of plentiful, affordable Grüner is part of the charm, but the varietal has the sophistication to improve with age. “Reserve” Grüners exhibit a deeper hue and a peppery flavour.

The terraced vineyards along the Danube are fairytale-pretty and make the ideal backdrop for a tasting. While you’re in Austria, consider trying the classic Grüner and weiner schnitzel combination. Vegetarians, on the other hand, will appreciate how well this one pairs with bitter veg like asparagus.

Argentina – Malbec & Torrontés

Malbec originated in France, but grew poorly in the French climate. The vine much preferred Argentina’s hot climate and high elevation, and quickly grew in popularity once it was planted there. It is rich and full-bodied, with flavours of dark fruits like cherry and blackberry. Malbec is excellent served on its own, and pairs well with smoky or earthy flavours. Try it with lean red meat or with mushrooms, or a pungent blue cheese. At a local tasting, you’ll notice the mountainous vistas of Salta are a good match with dramatic, bold flavours as well.

If you prefer white to red, Torrontés is among the famous wine varietals well worth trying. Of the three varieties — Torrontés Riojano, Sanjuanino, and Mendocino — Riojano is the popular favourite. Notable for its moderate acidity and light peach flavour, Torrontés also benefits from Argentina’s warm, dry climate and high elevation. It is usually drunk young, and carries refreshing floral and herbal notes. Torrontés pairs well with spicy Indian food, but while you’re in Salta try pairing it with empanada salteñas.

Portugal – Port & Vinho Verde

Port derives its name from the city of Porto, the second largest city in Portugal. The grapes are produced in nearby Duoro Valley, home to some unbelievably picturesque vineyards. Looking out across the Duoro River as it winds out to sea between sunny hillsides is guaranteed to enhance the tasting experience.

Port is a fortified wine, meaning the addition of brandy to wine stops fermentation before it is complete. This method preserves residual sugar for a sweeter flavour. Typically full-bodied and plummy, ports can serve as either aperitif or digestif. There are several varieties to try, including ruby and tawny port. The former is younger and retains more fruity characteristics, while the later is aged in small wooden barrels for a nuttier taste and a darker colour. Both are blended to maintain a balanced profile. More expensive vintage ports are blended, oaked, then bottle-aged for years to attain their peak complexity. Try serving a glass with blue cheese to round out a special meal.

If you’re looking for something a bit fresher, consider a glass of vinho verde. Literally “green wine,” the colour here refers to age, not grape variety. These wines are fresh and summery with a slight effervescence. Serve with seafood or other light, citrusy dishes. If you’re enjoying a glass after the end of a long day biking, the low alcohol content won’t send you off to bed too early.

Hungary – Tokaji Aszú

Hungary’s Tokaji aszú is considered one of the great dessert wines of the world. Even if you typically avoid sweet wines, this one deserves to be on your list. Aszú has a long history of being celebrated in royal courts across Europe. The production of aszú relies on noble rot, a type of mold that develops in moist conditions. When affected grapes dry out they shrivel, concentrating their flavours and sugars. They are then added in careful proportion to a base must, giving the wine its unique qualities. The high sweetness means aszú ages very well indeed — bottles can last over a century. Even a glass of more recent vintage will show rich flavours of apricot, honey, cinnamon and ginger. Aszú is delightful on its own, perhaps as a holiday digestif, or as part of classic pairing with foie gras, chocolate, or cheese.

—

At eight famous wine varietals across five countries, we’ve barely scratched the surface. There’s certainly enough here to kickstart a wonderful tasting adventure, but a list is no substitute for on-the-ground experience. Start planning your next custom trip and discover some new and vibrant flavours on your own.

After seven days of cycling along the Danube in our Hungary tour, you’ll have the luxury of overnighting in Budapest on the final tour date. Whether you prefer the quiet sophistication of classical music and museums or a raucous night on the town, Budapest will satisfy all of your senses.

Sight

Housing central Europe’s second largest collection of Egyptian art, Budapest’s Museum of Fine Arts is a must see for art aficionados. The 100,000 piece collection of fine art includes not only Egyptian art, but also sculptures and modern paintings. Budapest is also home to the Hungarian National Museum, the country’s largest at nearly 8,000 square feet. It’s no wonder Budapest is named Europe’s most beautiful city, with sculpture gardens, architecture, the historic castle district, all set against the Danube. Make sure your camera battery is charged!

Sound

Folk, jazz, classical or rock – music lovers visiting Budapest can be assured that they will have the opportunity to experience live music in their favorite genres. The Sziget, held each August, attracts more than 400,000 spectators and 1,000 musicians and is one of Europe’s largest music festivals. The Budapest Spring Festival is a perennial favourite among classical and opera music fans. In 2013, the musician line up included Patricia Petibon, Marc Minkowski and Christoph Prégardien. Not to be left out is Budapest’s reputation for a hot nightlife. Outdoor entertainment takes over the evenings in the warmer months and nightclubs thrum with party goers in the cooler seasons.

Smell

Though we could list Budapest’s coffee houses under taste, it will be the aroma of ground beans and brewed coffee that will draw you in for a cup of java. Budapest’s coffee houses have a unique history, with most of them destroyed or shut down during the wars and Communist rule. The Communists believed the coffee houses served as meeting spaces for underground criminal activity and even as late as 1950, the most popular ones were shuttered. Thankfully today you can relax in coffee houses as old as the Ruszwurm, built in 1827 or as upscale as the Zsolnay Cafe (described as snooty by locals, with the distinctive porcelain cups only reinforcing this reputation).

Taste

Honey, paprika, liqueurs, pickles, salami, pate, preserves and of course wine will satisfy all gourmands. Known throughout the world for these delicacies, most notably goose liver pate and szaloncukor, a chocolate covered candy only available at Christmas time. Shop at any farmer’s market for the freshest food and be sure to buy acacia honey, a local favourite.

Feel

Is there a better reward for finishing your cycling adventure than time spent in one of Budapest’s many Turkish baths? The Szechenyi Bath, Budapest’s most famous due to its architecture, has 15 pools and an indulgent spa adjacent to the pools. Kiraly Bath is Budapest’s oldest, having been built in 1565. Spring water in the baths (with one pool as warm as 40C) contain calcium, magnesium, hydrogen-carbonate, sulphate, sodium and fluoride ions – perfect for soothing your muscles post-ride.

Located in Esztergom, a city in northern Hungary that is 46 km north-west of Budapest, sits the magnificent Cathedral at Esztergom, or Esztergom Basilica, which has long been a focal point of visitors and locals alike. Once the capital of Hungary, Esztergom itself is ideally located on the right bank of the enchanting River Danube, giving the entire area an air of magic and ancient charm. Both the church, and the very city in which it is located, provide the perfect sampling of the rich history and cultural discovery that Hungary has to offer.

Esztergom happens to be one of the oldest towns in Hungary, so it’s no surprise that the area is teeming with history. The city, as it existed during the Middle Ages, lies beneath the modern-day town. In fact, some archeologists believe that at least some of the area has been inhabited since the end of the Ice Age, some 20,000 years ago. The Celts are credited as being the first to settle in the region, somewhere around 350 BC. This long, rich and sometimes sordid past lends to the charm and atmosphere of the town as it stands today.

After it was nearly destroyed during World War II, Esztergom was slowly reconstructed to become a thriving city once again. Visitors today can enjoy the exquisite architectural designs that are found throughout, mainly that of Hungarian Classicism. The most noteworthy of these designs is the mighty Basilica, which dominates the landscape above the winding streets of the town and the flowing Danube River. Below the Cathedral, the old walls and bastions of the ancient castle still stand along the edge of the surrounding mountains.

The church is a spectacular sight to behold, rising up as the tallest building in all of Hungary, and the 18th largest in the world. It features a beautiful semi-sphere dome with 12 windows, which rests 100m high from the bottom of the crypt. The inside of the Basilica measures an impressive 5,600m and features a magnificent altarpiece that depicts the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. This incredible piece of art was created by Michelangelo Grigoletti and is the world’s largest painting on a single canvas.

Another popular feature of the Cathedral is the Bakócz Chapel, which was constructed in the early 1500’s by Italian masters. It is made from exquisite red marble with walls that are adorned with motifs of the Tuscan Renaissance, which happens to be the most renowned example of Renaissance art remaining in Hungary. The Basilica’s crypt was built in differing style, having been constructed later, in 1831. It features Old Egyptian design and remains the resting place of a number of archbishops, including József Mindszenty.

Finally, the Cathedral’s magnificent organ was originally constructed in 1856 and was the largest organ in Hungary at the time, with 3,530 pipes, 49 stops and 3 manuals. In the 1980’s, a project was started to renovate and enlarge the organ, and this remains a work in progress. As of 2006, the organ had been expanded to feature 5 manuals and 85 stops. Presently, the organ contains the largest pipes in Hungary, measuring 10m high and approximately 35 feet long. It is expected to be the third largest organ in Europe once it is complete.

Hungary remains one of the most enchanting places to visit in Europe, and the world. With rich history, friendly people and fascinatingly unique culture, it’s certain to delight even the most distinguishing travelers. If a trip to this beautiful country is in your near future, Esztergom, and its magnificent Cathedral, should be at the top of your must-see list. You won’t be disappointed.

Hungary’s Delicious Cuisines

One of the oldest European countries, Hungary is a destination filled with rich history and a unique culture – one that its residents are fiercely proud of. It is home to one of the world’s most famous and beautiful cities, Budapest, and boasts fascinating historical finds from 2,000 year old ancient Roman ruins to monuments dating back some 400 years. The landscape is spectacular, from the pristine fresh water of the Balaton to the hundreds of natural mineral springs that gush from beneath the country’s fertile ground. In addition to their distinctive language and culture, Hungarians are particularly known for their warm hospitality and the delectable and distinctive dishes they prepare.

Hungarian dishes are typically prepared using staples like meat, seasonal vegetables, fresh fruit, breads, cheeses and honey. The food often has a spicy undertone, particularly due to hot paprika, which is commonly used in most dishes. Unlike other countries, lunch is the major meal of the day in Hungary, rather than dinner, and usually includes several courses. Here are five foods to try while visiting the beautiful country of Hungary.

Goulash – This dish is like a Hungarian version of a hearty stew or soup and typically contains ingredients such as meat, vegetables (especially potatoes) and is deliciously seasoned with paprika and a number of other mouthwatering spices. Goulash may come in many varieties that differ based on omission or addition of different ingredients such as adding sauerkraut, leaving out the potatoes or using smoked pork instead of beef. Whatever type you are able to sample while in Hungary, you’re sure to find yourself reaching for a second helping.

Halaszle – Another popular soup dish, Halaszle is a particular favorite of those who like hot or spicy foods since it’s based on spicy paprika as a main ingredient. It typically contains fish, hence it’s nickname “Fisherman’s Soup”, and is uniquely prepared using a kettle. Traditionally, it was prepared by the fishermen over an open fire right on the banks of the river from which the fish was caught – doesn’t get any fresher than that! Of course, you don’t have to hike down to the river bank to try this yummy dish. You can find the soup at many of the local eateries as well. Just don’t forget to ask for some bread to soak up that tasty broth and spices!

Hurka – While Hungarian dishes often contain delicious fresh vegetables and fruit, the country’s main source of sustenance is meat – namely, sausage. Hurka is a type of broiled sausage which can be found in varying recipes and flavors throughout the country. Different regions prepare their sausage differently, but all are incredibly tasty in their own right. There are two main types of Hurka: májas hurka, which is made from pork liver, meat and rice; and véres hurka, also known as black sausage. If you’re a meat lover, get ready to sink your teeth into some of the best tasting sausage on earth!

Turos Csusza – This traditional pasta dish is prepared with either a savory curd cheese or cottage cheese and noodles. The noodles are typically homemade and torn into bite-sized pieces by hand before being cooked. The pasta is combined with butter, cheese, chopped bacon and topped with a traditional Hungarian sour cream sauce before being heated in the oven. Turos Csusza can be found throughout Hungary in different variations, some sweet some savory, but all fantastically delicious.

Dobos Torte – If all of these main dishes aren’t enough to fill your belly to the brim, a delicious Hungarian dessert will certainly do the job. Dobos Torte is a delectable five-layer sponge cake which contains layers of rich chocolate buttercream and is topped with thin slices of caramel, which helps keep the cake from drying out. This sinfully delicious treat was named after its creator, József C. Dobos back in 1884 and has been gracing the plates of locals and tourists alike ever since. While there are plenty of savory desserts to sample in Hungary, Dobos Torte tops the must-try list.

The charming country of Hungary may be small, but what it lacks in square footage it more than makes up for in beauty, culture and a unique personality as colorful as the people who call it home. Whether it’s a romantic getaway for two or a journey for the whole family to enjoy, you’ll find everything you need in this one perfect destination. And when all the shopping, exploring and sightseeing is done for the day, you’ll get to enjoy some of the most delectable cuisine in the world. These are just five of the countless Hungarian dishes you’ll want to try during your stay. What are you waiting for? Come have a taste of your own!

Hungary is by far one of the most interesting and enjoyable destinations on earth. Visitors are intrigued by the country’s unique combination of old world traditions and modern day trends. Sometimes referred to as the “land of the spas” Hungary is the perfect destination for luxury and relaxation. For the more active traveler, there are diverse and challenging landscapes perfect for outdoor adventures and just waiting to be discovered. One of the most exciting ways to experience Hungary is on bike. And while the reasons to do so are practically endless, here are five that top the list.

Budapest

One of Hungary’s most popular destinations, Budapest is best known for all the lavish spas located there – a dozen to be exact. It’s also home to nearly a hundred thermal springs. But Budapest offers a lot more than just relaxing massages. Ancient Roman ruins and architectural masterpieces abound, attracting visitors from across the globe.

Buda Castle, a World Heritage Site, provides a full range of activities such as museums, restaurants and shops. The famed Chain Bridge is nothing short of awe-inspiring when it is brilliantly lit up as the sun goes down. Tiny Margaret Island is home to the capital’s most beautiful park. Ride over the bridge and take a break on the beach, or stay in one of the island’s two hotels. One thing’s for certain – you’ll never forget your experience in Budapest.

Geography

Hungary has a very diverse geography, with rivers, lakes and seemingly endless rolling green countryside. The Danube River stretches the entire length of Hungary and is one of the country’s most important bodies of water. It’s also home to Lake Balatan, the largest lake in central Europe. If it’s nature and recreation you seek, Hungary boasts 10 national parks, 35 landscape protection areas and 145 minor nature reserves. Additionally, the land in Hungary is exceptionally bountiful. An incredible 70% is suitable for agriculture. There couldn’t be a more inviting and exhilarating place to cycle.

Lake Hévíz

A geological anomaly, Lake Hévíz is the largest thermal lake in Europe. It is the epitome of relaxation, surrounded by rolling hills, nature conservation, and blissful water lilies. The warm waters are replenished daily and are thought to have healing powers. The mud that lines the bottom of the lake is also thought to be medicinal. The region has been treasured since the end of the 4th century and is still a popular location for those seeking the healing powers of nature.

Cuisine

If the history and natural beauty of Hungary aren’t enough, the delectable cuisine will certainly win you over. The secret lies in the spices and preparation, and the results are mouthwatering. Traditional dishes like goulash are delicious, hearty and can be found just about anywhere you dine. Paprika is native to Hungary and is featured in many local dishes to add spice. Desserts like fruit-filled strudels and Dobos Cake are also frequently served and enjoyed. The gastronomical experience is just another way to learn more about Hungary.

Gyor

Originally a Hungarian stronghold, this historic town is known as “the town of rivers” and is famous for its progressive industry and breathtaking architecture. Káptalan Hill is the core or “heart” of the city and is found at the convergence of three rivers: the Danube, the Rába and the Rábca. One of the most notable sites in Gyor is the Pannonhalma Abbey, a UNESCO World Heritage site and the second largest territorial abbey in the world. It hosts an exquisite art collection and a library filled with national treasures. There is so much rich history here it’s almost impossible to experience it all in one visit.

Hungary, with its rich cultural history, breathtaking landscapes and plethora of relaxing spa treatments is one of the most beautiful places on earth to visit. Add to this the endless thrill of outdoor activities amidst the backdrop of nature at its best and you’ve got the perfect location for adventure travel. Cycling is just one of the many options, but certainly one of the very best ways to truly experience all of what Hungary has to offer.
