Is it too soon?  Here, at my desk in my home office, I hear the landscapers at the neighboring homes running leaf blowers and chain saws, and I hear the construction of home improvements in the neighborhood. I see the delivery vans going by. In a way, it seems that some things haven’t changed. But, here in the business of travel, much has changed, and we know that as of this writing we have a long way to go still.

Here is what we are wondering:

Will the cruise industry and smaller versions of cruising come back?   

Will group travel be interesting or will the idea of being in close quarters with people you don’t know be an undesirable experience?

How about airplanes and hotels, or any kind of small lodging experience?

We are thinking that everyone who is cooped up at home and without financial stress, will want to return to some form of travel experiences as soon as possible.  But, what we expect is that many travelers will take to short haul destinations and limit exposure in airplanes, boats, and many other group environments. International travel may take a little longer to come back. This is only a perception at this point, but it is based on customer comments and on travel industry commentary and surveys.  Frankly, the media will drive perception of risk in travel, and as tourism is so important to so many economies, we can be sure to see some propaganda.

Here is the result of a survey shared with us from the Adventure Travel Shows: “More than 60% of travelers said they haven’t yet adjusted their summer vacation plans due to the COVID-19 outbreak. As for the milestone that would trigger them to travel again, nearly half stated a decline in COVID-19 cases or a lifting of shelter in place order. Only 9% would wait for a vaccine for COVID-19 to travel again.”   This is fairly close to our observations as well.  So much can change however.

We have been in touch with our local partners in hard-hit destinations like Italy, and we are hearing about new procedures for hotel cleaning and the overall hotel experience.  Examples include having breakfast in your room (instead of a buffet style dining room), limited front desk access (1 customer at a time), and front desks with protective glass between the staff and customers.  If this is the way forward and the new hotel/lodging experience is going to be like this, I think the travel experience is going to change somewhat.

We at Pure Adventures have always been focused on Self Guided Adventures and Private Guided Adventures. As such, we think we are well positioned for the return to travel when it comes. We expect and are preparing for more private experiences. Anyone not interested in being in a group setting with strangers but eager to travel, should find comfort in our formula. Saying that, it is important to add that while not being with a group of strangers on a fixed agenda is great, it would be a shame not to mix and interact with locals wherever you go. Travel is for us, about experiencing the destination which includes the culture, traditions, and the people. Visiting sites is great, but meeting locals is wonderful, too.

France Loire Royal Valley Cycling Tour

We recommend the Royal Valley cycling tour for its well-balanced characteristics. The cycling distances are approximately forty kilometres per day, a satisfying length that most occasional cyclists can handle. The terrain is flat to gently rolling, and enlivened by impressive castles. A duration of five nights and six days, and good pricing on mid-range lodging, make it easy to keep the budget manageable.

The tour begins in the town of Amboise. There the museum at Clos Lucé, where Leonardo Da Vinci spent the last years of his life, has a selection of engaging, interactive displays. Or book a kayak trip around Castle Chenonceau for a unique perspective on one of the region’s most beautiful chateaus. History can be a hard sell for kids, but you might get some traction by introducing them to the story of Joan of Arc, whose campaign is commemorated at spots throughout the Loire Valley. The Château de Blois, which this tour visits on Day Four, also has many tales of intrigue and assassination to fire the imagination.

Italy – Dolomites To Lake Garda Cycling Tour

Despite beginning in the impressive Dolomites mountain range, this is a relatively easy tour thanks to a route that runs mostly downhill along bike paths. Scenic small towns provide numerous points of interest, not to mention classic Italian cuisine highly appealing to adventurous foodies without being alienating to a fussy eater.

Day Two of the tour takes you past Lake Resia, where the eerie sight of a semi-submerged tower jutting from the water will fascinate visitors young and old. Cycling through medieval alleyways near beautiful Lake Garda is also an incredible sensory experience and a gift to any teen who hasn’t yet been exposed to Europe’s centuries of history.

Italy – Sicily Mt Etna & Aeolian Islands Hiking

If your young traveler has any interest in hiking, this is a very solid choice. Adventure seekers and budding naturalists will enjoy the bragging rights that come with climbing Mount Etna, the largest active volcano in Europe. Teens who appreciate novelty might also be intrigued to hear they’ll be shuttling between islands by hydrofoil. You can reassure them they’ll be seeing more than just pretty landscapes — hikes take you past steaming volcanic fumaroles and along the famous black beaches of the Island of Vulcano. Adults will probably be drawn to the Sicilian coffee and the ancient theatre of Taormina, which dates to the 3rd century BC.

Just be advised that the trails in this region isn’t easy, so everyone involved should be prepared for a physical challenge.

Italy – Sardinia Private Self Guided Bike Tour

Beaches! The Mediterranean waters are the big draw here, long sandy beaches complemented by high cliffs and Spanish watchtowers. You’ll visit tiny fishing villages, see pink flamingos gathered at ponds, and eat the freshest seafood possible. Wondering how to fix cycling hand pain? It comes with the territory that we will all experience some aches and pains from cycling, but aches and pains can become repetitive injury when not dealt with properly. There’s lots of areas to cover, but this blog will talk about the hands and how you can keep hand pain at bay.

Suffer from numbness, pain or tingling in your hands and fingers when riding? Here’s what’s hurting you and how to stop it in it’s tracks; let’s get your cycling hand pain fixed!

1) Watch Your Weight

You may need to adjust your ride position. Be conscious of how your leaning when riding and where you are putting your weight when hitting a turn. This alone may be enough to take pressure off your hands, easing pain.

2) Creating A Buzz

Transmission of road ‘buzz’ and vibration through the bars can cause discomfort in the hands all the way to the shoulders. To accommodate for this buzzing through your hands and arms, periodically loosen your grip slightly – this will break up the sensation and ease discomfort.

3) Shorten Your Reach

More often than not, the solution to hand pain is to shorten your reach, that way more of your weight will be borne by the saddle.

4) Good Padding

Cycling hand pain can also be lessened by wearing gloves with gel padding over the ulnar area, plus there are many good padded bar tapes available. Increase the padding and create comfy cushion between you and your bike!

One of the most exciting parts of what we do here at Pure Adventures is dreaming up tours that take adventure travellers “off the beaten path” for an experience they will never forget. One that will have you riding through the back alleys of Bangkok, have you soaking up the rich history of the temples and cultural sites, and travelling the winding pathways of Chinatown to see, feel and hear the street life.

From Bangkok to the northern capital of Chiang Mai, this cycling tour of Thailand is geared to the traveller who isn’t afraid to kick it up a notch, and push themselves to their own personal limits.  Although this isn’t a self-guided tour, we’ve done our best to make it feel totally hands off.  You’ll have access to support on all rides just in case you need it.

Let’s take a closer look at “Thailand – Chiang Mai Cycling Adventure” shall we?

Day 1: You’ll stay at the Anantara Riverside Bangkok Resort: Set on the banks of the grand Chao Phraya River, Anantara Riverside Bangkok Resort is a thriving oasis offering a unique way to experience the City of Angels. Majestic palms swaying in the breeze. Spa treatments hidden within lush tropical gardens. Luxurious suites lit by the twinkle of the city skyline. Delectable meals fusing tastes from around the globe. Day 2: Bangkok 7km cycling through Chinatown: After breakfast at the hotel, your guide will pick you up and drive you to Chinatown square where you start an interesting walk through one of the oldest parts of Bangkok. Walk along Yaowarat Road where you visit interesting shops selling birds’ nests and shark fins, continue to a very old teashop to enjoy a cup of Chinese tea with the locals before heading down Trok Leng Moi Eia (a small soi)to Talad Kao for a busy local market with variety of fresh food, fresh & dry fruits, Chinese herbs, groceries. End the walk at Wat Leng Nei Yi to visit the Taoist temple. Afternoon is free at your leisure. Overnight in Bangkok; breakfast included.

Day 3: Bangkok to Chiang Mai; Short 7km Cycling and Walking: After breakfast at the hotel, your guide will pick you up for a transfer to Suvarnabhumi Airport. Upon arrival, your next guide will pick you up and it’s time to put on your walking shoes and head out to explore the highlights of this charismatic South East Asian city by foot! What better place to start our day of discovery than the banks of the Mae Ping River! From here, we join the bustle of Waroros market, a favorite for Chiang Mai locals for exotic species, colorful fruits, an endless variety of rice and bizarre new culinary delights. From here we continue by rickshaw to Tapae Gate and continue to explore ancient Chiang Mai on foot. Tapae Gate is Chiang Mai’s main entrance to the old walled city. In days gone by, it was the gate through which traders, diplomats and visiting monks passed when they had business in the city proper. From here, we continue our walk to Three Kings Monument and the city’s most beautiful temples Wat Chedi Luang, where the famous Emerald Buddha was once enshrined, and Wat Phra Singh, home to a very old and sacred Buddha image. Transfer to hotel. Overnight in Chiang Mai, breakfast included.

Day 4: Chiang Mai to Doi Saket (cycling distance: up to 40 km): Transfer south of Chiang Mai to the grounds of Wiang Kum Kam or The Lost City, once the capital of then Lanna Kingdom. After a short cycling around the main site, transfer to Fa Ham, mount the bikes and take off east through the outskirts of Chiang Mai. Have lunch at a local restaurant nearby the dam. At the Mae Kuang Dam, board the long tail boat taking us across the lake. Walk a hill and continue a short ride before arriving at the tree house resort. Here our adventure for today ends. At the resort, just relax, take a walk in the organic garden or continue cycle to the nearby village and visit the Coca Cola trail or the bat cave. Overnight in Doi Saket; breakfast, lunch, and dinner included.

Day 5: Doi Saket to Mae Taeng (cycling distance: up to 50 km, kayaking approximately 1.5 hours): This morning we start early and ride right out of the resort, cycling the picturesque road bordering Sri Lanna National Park to Buatong Waterfall. Most of the route is paved concrete or asphalt which makes the cycling pleasant and fun. Before lunch arrive at the Mae Ngat Dam for some fresh fruit and drinks. Leave the bikes and change gear, off the road and into the water we go! Take a 20 boat transfer to the floating restaurant in the dam, paddle the lake in sit on top kayaks. At the raft house, dive into the water for a refreshing swim and get seated for lunch. In the afternoon, take a long tail boat ride back and start cycling from the dam through Mae Taeng district. Dinner and Overnight in Mae Taeng; breakfast, lunch, and dinner included.

Day 6: Mae Taeng to Mae Rim (cycling distance: up to 55 km): Checkout from the resort and begin today’s ride at the resort, cycling the undulating roads south to Mork Fa Waterfall. Hike on the nice path through the jungle and visit the 60 meters high waterfall. Continue Riding through local communities on small roads before stopping for lunch at a local restaurant. Follow the Mae Rim River south challenging a set of mountain-side hills before arriving at your resort for the night. Dinner and Overnight in Mae Rim; breakfast, lunch, and dinner included.

Day 7: Mae Rim to Chiang Mai (cycling distance: up to 30 km): Time to explore Mae Rim! Start riding right from the resort on the hillside roads, including a few easy climbs. As we leave the green lush (seasonal) areas behind and start moving closer to more populated areas we get a good glimpse of Chiang Mai “suburbs”, a less travelled area of Chiang Mai where the new blends with the old. By the Mae Sa canal we find the temple Wat Pa Darapirom. What better than a coffee or soft drink after visiting the temple, drop a local coffee shop for a freshly brewed organically grown coffee of your choice. Visit the royal initiated project of the King and learn about sufficiency economy. The Sufficiency Economy is a philosophy developed by King Bhumibol Adulyadej of Thailand through his royal remarks over the past three decades. Thailand values this new economics philosophy as a practical tool to effectively manage capitalism in a way that aligns and engages it with social sustainable development. Transfer to Huay Tung Tao Lake for lunch before heading back to hotel in Chiang Mai. Breakfast and lunch included.

Day 8: Departure Day: After breakfast at the hotel, your guide will pick you up for a transfer to Chiang Mai Airport. Breakfast included.
