The internal cities in Spain can get quite warm over the summer months – it’s not uncommon for Madrid to top 100F! Girona and the Catalonia region are their warmest in August at 87F. But come September, October, and even November, the temperatures drop to a comfortable 65-76F, perfect for a day of riding. Sunny days are common, with the occasional rain shower. The fall rains are pleasant, and nothing a lightweight rain jacket and booties can’t manage.

2. Fewer crowds
With the summer holidays over, Spain’s beaches are a retreat for cyclists who visit in September and October, as the majority of travelers who head to the coast to soak up the sun have gone home. As well, bustling cities are a little quieter, and lineups for museums and other attractions are a little shorter – but Spain’s distinctive culture continues to thrive. Due to recent changes impacting the travel industry, we would like to address some new guidelines (below) for our customers in regard to bike tours, trekking/hiking tours, and general travel suggestions.

The tour business has historically been the domain of group guided tours; self-guided tours really only took off in the last 10-15 years. Still, most of the tour options available to consumers are the guided groups where individuals or couples sign up for a fixed departure and set off with a group of friends and a guide. This model has a lot of new work to do to manage virus safety. New guidelines issued by the ATTA were developed with the help of some of the biggest and best-financed adventure operators. They are well done but are most relevant to guided group trips.

That being said, most of that is not applicable to our model of self-guided and private guided bike tours. Pure Adventures, in combination with our local partners, are working to do our part and select the best vendors who are also doing their part to make the safest, best experience for our travelers as they return to exploring the world. Our hotel partners are following their specific guidelines, as restaurants are theirs. Our taxi transfer providers and drivers also have their own ‘industry guidelines,’ including the number of people per vehicle and protective glass between the front/rear cab area. Here are some other initiatives we are putting in place:

1. Orientations and Equipment Fittings: These will be done in a socially distanced way, with all parties wearing face masks (including guests). Helmets, bike bags, and bikes are cleaned and disinfected between uses. You may wish to bring your own helmet and bike bag for more assurance, but note that we always require a helmet to be worn while riding.  More telephone and/or zoom orientations will be available.

2. Luggage Transfers: Drivers will use hand sanitizer before and after handling customer luggage.

3. More Electronic Data: More and more, navigation is moving to an electronic format, along with cue sheets and suggestions for visiting, exploring, etc. Less paper is good in every way.

4.  Travel with a Face Mask: We require travelers to have them on their person at all times but not while riding/hiking/paddling unless you choose to do so.

5.  Communication Support: In case you start to feel sick during your trip you will have local support. This includes advising about contact tracing apps that may be required in the area you are traveling.

6. Off the Beaten Path: We are choosing less busy routes, trails, and villages, whenever possible.

We recommend the following to all travelers:

• Stay up-to-date with covid-related restrictions and requirements by visiting the US Embassy & Consulate Covid website, with country-specific updates.
• Get Travel Insurance and budget for the “Cancel for Any Reason” option – required for all 2022 tours.
• Stay home if you or anyone in your family experiences symptoms of illness.
• Carry your own hand sanitizer and use it frequently.
• Always practice social distancing and always, be respectful of locals.
• Get accustomed to using your smartphone in advance, as well as the applications we send to you.
• Plan to distance when crossing strangers on the trail/path.
• Bring your own gear – as best you can within luggage limits.
• Get in touch if you start to feel ill at any point during your trip and self-isolate; our local support team will advise actions. Note that local contact tracing and testing in each destination may have special requirements.

One of our new tours is on a favorite trail where I grew up, the Mickelson Trail in the Black Hills of South Dakota; it’s a special place I’d like to tell you more about!

At the time, growing up in the Black Hills didn’t feel like anything extraordinary. I went downhill skiing in the winter and to summer camps amidst towering pines, always with the Hills in view. Like many little boys, I climbed trees and rode my bike everywhere, all summer long. And I remember watching in awe as summer storms rose up over the mountains in the west: scarlet sunsets lighting up the storm clouds to the east as the massive clouds rolled away over the distant prairie. In elementary school, bright-eyed little me devoured the exciting stories of the Gold Rush, Wild West adventures, and Native American history; important pieces of history that shaped the unique culture of the Black Hills. It was a great place to grow up! We had plenty of adventures and the “classic Americana” childhood experience.

Many of you have probably never heard of the Roaring Fork Valley. To be honest, until I moved here 12 years ago, neither had I. I can remember the exact moment I arrived in the valley. I’d been living in Denver and was familiar with the many nearby ski areas such as Breck, Vail, A-Basin, etc.; these are all located off of the beast of a highway known as I-70. When I turned off that highway and started winding my way up towards Aspen, it was then that I had a real Aha moment. So these are the mountains, I thought to myself. I was in complete awe; I may have even been drooling. I watched the sparkling Roaring Fork River as it followed me through canyons and valleys until I finally arrived at the small town of Aspen. It was June 21, 2008, and summer was in full swing. Everything was bright green, with rainbow-colored wildflowers blooming everywhere I looked, snow-capped mountains greeting me in the distance, and all of this was set against the perfect backdrop of a typical Colorado “bluebird sky.”

Twelve years later and I’m still here. I’ll admit, I’m completely hooked. We have a saying here: “You come for the winters but you stay for the summers.” This couldn’t be more spot on. The activities are endless, and I’ve grown to love them all. Hiking and mountain biking on miles of trails, road biking, the Rio Grande bike path, kayaking, SUP’ing, whitewater rafting, rock climbing, camping, wildflowers, golden fall leaves, fly fishing, diverse wildlife – bear, moose & elk, free Snowmass concerts, rodeos, culture & arts…it’s endless! Not to mention, the weather in summer is perfectly divine. Imagine summer temperatures where the hottest day is 88 degrees, but most days you’re sitting in the low to mid-80’s. Evening temperatures are typically in the 50’s and 60’s. The air is dry, not humid, so you won’t find mosquitoes up here. And by up, I mean the fact that we sit at an altitude: of 8,000+ ft. For those of you looking to do a little high-altitude cycling training, you’ve come to the right place. There’s a reason that Lance Armstrong and so many other athletes choose to make this place their home.

And sure, Aspen is known for its celebrities, glam, and swankiness, but that’s not what this area really is. For us locals, it’s the Roaring Fork Valley. It’s two perfect playgrounds consisting of two adjacent villages: Aspen and Snowmass Village. Here, you have access to nature at its finest, located conveniently outside your doorstep. Here, the evening skies sparkle with stars that only when you leave the valley, do you take for granted. Here, nature offers you everything.

So as I share this with you, things are slowly beginning to open and COVID-19 restrictions are being lifted. I would like to personally invite you to escape to the Roaring Fork Valley this summer/fall.
