Italy holds the record for most UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and Puglia is home to several. Perhaps the most distinctive are the trulli of Alberobello. Trulli (singular trullo) are stone huts with conical roofs, typically made with local limestone. The dry-stacked construction style means they are built without the use of mortar. Evocative symbols are sometimes painted on the roofs, with brilliant white caps on the peak as the finishing touch. Clustered together on a hillside, they look like they might’ve been lifted from a storybook.

Alberobello is home to approximately 1500 trulli, many of them still in use as homes, shops, and cottages. Despite their ubiquity, the history of these unique structures is still in doubt. While it is know that the oldest trulli standing today date to the 14th century, archeological evidence suggests their design goes further back. One popular theory argues their dry-stone construction allowed them to be pulled down in a hurry, which was convenient when a medieval housing inspector came by to charge levies on permanent structures. If it’s true, trulli may be the world’s most attractive tax dodge.

Whatever their origins, the trulli make perfectly charming accommodations during a stay in Alberobello. Our Puglia tour spends two days lingering in the area, with overnights in Trulli e Puglia. After a day exploring the winding alleyways of the town and the surrounding landscape of the Itria Valley, this is a nice chance to relax and bask in the cozy interior atmosphere of a trullo. Beyond just unique architecture, however, Alberobello offers a range of gastronomic delights. The classic Italian staples of cheeses, cured meats, and pastas are present and accounted for, but leave some room for taralli, a regional favourite snack food similar to a pretzel made with local olive oil. Rosolio is another southern Italian specialty well worth a try. Made from rose petals, this liqueur is often flavoured with herbs, spices, or fruits. Consider it a compliment if your host pours you a glass – rosolio is a traditional offering of good luck.

There’s plenty more to see in Puglia once you’ve had your fill of trulli, of course. Two millennia of change and conflict have left their stamp on the region. Before the turn of the common era, Illyrian and Italic tribes settled the area. The Greeks arrived in 8th century BCE, before being supplanted by the Romans who used the fertile land to grow crops to feed their expansion. After the fall of the Western Roman empire in the 5th century CE, a rotating cast of players vied for control over the next several centuries, including the Byzantine Empire, the Normans, the Turks, Austria, and Spain. In 1861, Puglia joined a united Italy. What this means for the contemporary visitor is wealth of historical sites to ponder and explore.

Otranto, for instance, is a seaside town of pristine beaches and narrow Old World streets. Students of history, however, may be drawn to Otranto Cathedral. The cathedral was built in the 11th century and combines Byzantine and Roman influences. An Ottoman siege in the 15th century caused hundreds of deaths and extensive damage, but when the cathedral was retaken a year later the ordeal was commemorated with a macabre tribute – the skulls and bones of 800 Christian “Martyrs of Otranto” can be seen today in an arrangement behind the altar. With evocative history like that, it’s no wonder English author Horace Walpole basically kickstarted the Gothic fiction genre in 1764 with his novel The Castle of  Otranto.

Whether it’s the sunsoaked landscapes or rich historical backdrop that initially attracts a visitor, it’s hard to leave without an appreciation of both. Alberobello and Otranto provide marquee destinations that stand among Europe’s most best, but rambles through Puglia’s tiny towns, through bright piazzas and past orchards of cherry trees, make an indelible impression as well. Tapas restaurants may be thriving in Croatia, but the word itself is derived from the Spanish. Translating as “to cover,” the first tapas were literally slices of bread or meat served over top a drink (see our blog post on Spanish and Basque tapas for more details). Like many Mediterranean recipes, Croatian tapas dishes are often based on simple combinations of high-quality ingredients. Menu items like bruschetta, marinated anchovies, green olive paste, and cheese with fig jam create rich, harmonious flavours. Cheese is frequently a featured item, with pag cheese perhaps the most notable. The rugged island of Pag is given a light dusting of salt by sea winds, which settles on the foliage. Only hardy, aromatic plants like sage can survive this climate, so when sheep graze on the vegetation the resulting milk and cheese is uncommonly flavourful. Softer varieties, like honey-dipped cottage cheese, are also delectable and frequently served at tastings.

Tapas dishes can be enjoyed on their own, though as the etymology suggests wine makes for an unparalleled accompaniment. Croatia is geographically close to Italy, and its wine is similarly excellent. Plavac Mali is a regional favourite, a full-bodied red varietal typically high in alcohol and tannins with notes of berry and pepper. Especially if you like Zinfandel, try Plavac Mali. If your taste runs more towards white wines, try the Dalmatian specialty Pošip. This crisp white pairs nicely with fish, making it a nice complement to salty tapas items like sardines and anchovies.

Even if you’re wine connoisseur, you may be less conversant in the nuances of olive oil. Another pillar of Mediterranean culture, Croatian olive oils regularly make the list of the best in the world according to the New York International Olive Oil Competition. Cold-pressed olive oil has a pronounced flavour and can be matched with foods much like a wine. Tapas menus often include olive oil pairings with fleur de sel, balsamic vinegar, and homemade bread. If your vacation has involved some indulgent food and drink, be reassured olive oil is also quite healthy, packed with antioxidants and other beneficial compounds.

Another nice feature of tapas bars is that in some chefs may prepare the food before your eyes, and offer commentary on their recipe and ingredients as they do. This is perhaps the best way to get insight into the differences between olive varieties, wine pairings, etc. before digging in. A little advance research can help you identify must-trys along your route, so we’ve compiled a list of regionally famous wine varietals to keep an eye out for next time you find yourself in wine country.

Germany – Riesling

Riesling is Germany’s signature varietal — the first recorded reference to Riesling comes from the 15th century, when it became the drink of choice for German nobility. Today it accounts for nearly a quarter of the nation’s total wine production. Rieslings are typically low in alcohol, high in acidity, and prized for their refreshing crispness. Somewhat unusually for a white wine, they can age well. Older Rieslings develop a signature petroleum smell, which might sound unappetizing but is natural and prized as part of the grape’s unique profile. They range from sweet to bone-dry depending on the terroir. Because of the local climate, German Rieslings tend towards the dry side. Austria – Grüner Veltliner 

Austria’s favorite grape is Grüner Veltliner, or Grüner for short. This wonderful white is often considered one the world’s best “food wines.” Again thanks to its high acidity it can hold its own even against red meat or a spicy plate of Vietnamese. The availability of plentiful, affordable Grüner is part of the charm, but the varietal has the sophistication to improve with age. “Reserve” Grüners exhibit a deeper hue and a peppery flavour.

The terraced vineyards along the Danube are fairytale-pretty and make the ideal backdrop for a tasting. While you’re in Austria, consider trying the classic Grüner and weiner schnitzel combination. Vegetarians, on the other hand, will appreciate how well this one pairs with bitter veg like asparagus. 

Argentina – Malbec & Torrontés 

Malbec originated in France, but grew poorly in the French climate. The vine much preferred Argentina’s hot climate and high elevation, and quickly grew in popularity once it was planted there. It is rich and full-bodied, with flavours of dark fruits like cherry and blackberry. Malbec is excellent served on its own, and pairs well with smoky or earthy flavours. Try it with lean red meat or with mushrooms, or a pungent blue cheese. At a local tasting, you’ll notice the mountainous vistas of Salta are a good match with dramatic, bold flavours as well.

If you prefer white to red, Torrontés is among the famous wine varietals well worth trying. Of the three varieties — Torrontés Riojano, Sanjuanino, and Mendocino — Riojano is the popular favourite. Notable for its moderate acidity and light peach flavour, Torrontés also benefits from Argentina’s warm, dry climate and high elevation. It is usually drunk young, and carries refreshing floral and herbal notes. Torrontés pairs well with spicy Indian food, but while you’re in Salta try pairing it with empanada salteñas.

Portugal – Port & Vinho Verde

Port derives its name from the city of Porto, the second largest city in Portugal. The grapes are produced in nearby Duoro Valley, home to some unbelievably picturesque vineyards. Looking out across the Duoro River as it winds out to sea between sunny hillsides is guaranteed to enhance the tasting experience.

Port is a fortified wine, meaning the addition of brandy to wine stops fermentation before it is complete. This method preserves residual sugar for a sweeter flavour. Typically full-bodied and plummy, ports can serve as either aperitif or digestif. There are several varieties to try, including ruby and tawny port. The former is younger and retains more fruity characteristics, while the later is aged in small wooden barrels for a nuttier taste and a darker colour. Both are blended to maintain a balanced profile. More expensive vintage ports are blended, oaked, then bottle-aged for years to attain their peak complexity. Try serving a glass with blue cheese to round out a special meal.

If you’re looking for something a bit fresher, consider a glass of vinho verde. Literally “green wine,” the colour here refers to age, not grape variety. These wines are fresh and summery with a slight effervescence. Serve with seafood or other light, citrusy dishes. If you’re enjoying a glass after the end of a long day biking, the low alcohol content won’t send you off to bed too early.

Hungary – Tokaji Aszú 

Hungary’s Tokaji aszú is considered one of the great dessert wines of the world. Even if you typically avoid sweet wines, this one deserves to be on your list. Aszú has a long history of being celebrated in royal courts across Europe. The production of aszú relies on noble rot, a type of mold that develops in moist conditions. When affected grapes dry out they shrivel, concentrating their flavours and sugars. They are then added in careful proportion to a base must, giving the wine its unique qualities. The high sweetness means aszú ages very well indeed — bottles can last over a century. Even a glass of more recent vintage will show rich flavours of apricot, honey, cinnamon and ginger. Aszú is delightful on its own, perhaps as a holiday digestif, or as part of classic pairing with foie gras, chocolate, or cheese.

Wine is an important part of the culture of many of our destinations: France, Portugal, Spain, Italy, Chile and Argentina all offer vineyards of international distinction. If you’re tempted to stop off on your next custom tour but don’t know where to begin, take heart! You don’t have to be a trained sommelier to thoroughly enjoy your next wine tasting. A sense of curiosity is more important than a schooled palate, but knowing a few basic principles in advance can help you get the most out of the experience.

For wine tasting newcomers, the complexity and sophistication of the subject can seem intimidating. Remember you’re not expected to know everything coming in. Staffers are there to answer your questions, and learning about the unique characteristics of their product is half the fun. Let them bring you into the fold.

If you’re planning to stop at a winery as part of a self-guided trip, pay attention to tasting order. As a general rule you should always taste from lightest to heaviest. A red with lots of tannins will obscure the flavour of a delicate white. Same goes for food pairings. Taking the food pairing recommendations is best, but if bringing your own food is an option don’t choose bold flavours that will obscure the featured item. A delicate pinot noir that tastes exquisite on its own may taste anemic served alongside a hearty steak. Also, don’t forget that habits like coffee drinking or wearing a strong scent could confuse your palate.

If you’re pouring for yourself, don’t fill a glass more than one-third full. Any more than that and you won’t be able to swirl the glass effectively, which aerates the wine and releases its full aroma. Technique isn’t terribly important — you can even keep the base of the glass on the table and move it in circles for a few seconds. Don’t swirl until your arm goes numb but don’t worry about overdoing it either, because a wine needs to sit out for a day or two to become over-oxygenated. While you’re swirling, notice the way wine leaves stripes or “tears” down the side of the glass. If you’ve ever heard someone say a wine has legs, this is what they mean. Thick, slow tears indicate a higher sugar and alcohol content, but don’t read too deeply into it — tears are no indication of overall quality. 

Next, hold the glass to the light and tilt it. If you have a white background, even better. You’re looking for details like clarity, colour, and viscosity. As you might’ve guessed, a more opaque wine indicates a fuller body than a highly translucent wine. A slight haze is fine, but cloudiness is usually a bad sign. Also notice the way the colour grades at the edges. If it thins out drastically, the flavour might be on the weak side. A wine that shows significant browning is likely of an older vintage, unless it has simply oxidized. The details differ widely across varietals, so again don’t be afraid to ask questions.

You’re past the preamble now – time to sample the aroma. Hover your nose over the glass and take a few whiffs. The easiest scents to identify are fruity, followed by floral, herbal, or earthy notes. You might also detect hints of coffee, vanilla, smoke or other flavours derived from an oak barrel. Unpleasant smells can be indicative of flaws, like mustiness from a wine that has “corked,” but with any luck you won’t encounter these on your tasting. The permutations are limitless, so don’t overthink this step or you’ll end up confusing yourself.

Instead just take a small sip. The flavour should be pleasantly balanced between acidity, sweetness, and astringency. Acidity gives wine its gratifying tartness and is often what is being referred to when people describe a wine as “crisp.” Too little acidity causes a wine to taste flat while too much makes it taste downright sour. Personal preference plays a role here, as does food pairing – salty, fatty foods can help counterbalance high acidity. Sweetness is determined by the amount of residual sugar, but the perception of it is similarly affected by acidity. A balanced wine won’t leave a cloying impression, but won’t leave your mouth feeling parched either. Thirdly, the sensation of astringency is provided by tannins, which are derived from grape skins, stems, and seeds. They lend a wine complexity provided they don’t leave your mouth uncomfortably dry. 

An older wine is more likely to blend these qualities seamlessly, whereas in a younger wine they can sometimes feel as if they are jostling for position. If a young wine strikes you as exceptionally well-balanced, you may have real winner on your hands. Beyond these broad characteristics, a wine should evoke subtle flavour characteristics like caramel and clove.

Pay attention to texture as well. A higher alcohol content, for instance, can give wine more body for a luxurious, velvety impression on the palate. The best wines will continue to linger and evolve for a long time. Resist the urge to sip again too soon and savour the finish. It may help to take notes: verbalizing a sense impression is hard to begin with, and it doesn’t get easier the next day. Taking notes will help you remember which wines you enjoyed best, and which you might like to take home with you.

If you’re tasting multiple wines, don’t forget to cleanse your palate in between. Water is your best choice here, but you may be surprised to know the same doesn’t apply to rinsing your glass. Some experts feel water dilutes the taste of a wine, so prefer simply to refill the glass with the next variety. The exception is when switching between reds and whites or vastly different varietals, when a splash of the upcoming variety is swirled and dumped to prime the glass instead.

Beyond simply cleansing your palate, remember to pace yourself. That goes double if you’re cycling between wineries and need to stay alert. Don’t be afraid to spit out your wine in the provided receptacles. Staff won’t mind, even if you pour out the remainder of a glass you don’t intend to finish. Doing so simply allows you taste more varieties, won’t impact your enjoyment of the flavour, and keeps you safe on the road.

Fully understanding and appreciating the nuances of wine is the work of a lifetime — just ask a master vintner. Argentina is a culturally rich destination. Stop in Buenos Aires, and you’ll see why it’s the country’s capital. Boasting to be the home of tango, it also is the home of many different people – as it openly accepts immigrants from across the world. Because of this, Buenos Aires is considered a melting pot, and its cultural influences are not purely limited to its indigenous and Spanish backgrounds. But for the outdoorsy traveler, Buenos Aires might get old. Located on the Atlantic coast, it skips out on the beauty and the majesty of the Andes mountains. For those, head over to Salta and get ready for a mix of culture and nature.

For being so far from the nation’s capital and so surrounded by natural wonders, Salta is a large city. Home to 620,000 residents, it is a nest of culture in the foothills of the Andes. This region is well known for its archaeological wonders, and a trip to the High Mountain Archaeological Museum will prove this. Travel even just a few miles outside of the city and you will find yourself in quaint towns that host authentic Argentinian food (like delicious empanadas) available after a long day of hiking. North of Salta is Purmamarca, which holds the Hill of the Seven Colors – only one of the many enjoyable hikes in this area of the Andes, famous for the sedimentary deposits in the hills that give it its name.

Nearby Cuesta de Lipán gets the hiker close to Chile and Bolivia. Here you can see more of the famous colored hills of the region, and witness the famous pack animals of the region, like llamas and donkeys. Small towns speckle this region and pave the way for some of the comfort foods that the area is known for, like quinoa and fava bean dishes. Nearby, the Chachi mountain is another breathtaking sight of the area. A farm-heavy area, hikers can often see the fruits of the local farmers’ labor at its varying stages of growth and harvest. Or, visitors may opt to purchase this produce in nearby towns and get a taste of the nearby region after a hard day of hiking.

Try Out the Beach Life

Catalonia and beaches: they’re practically synonyms. When visitors think of this Mediterranean gem, many immediately picture the warm sand, soft blue sky, and white-capped waves of the surrounding seas. With more than 500 kilometres of coastline – much of it in the form of pristine beaches – it’s little wonder that the area has become one of Spain’s most desirable locales.

Though each seaside destination has its own appeal, it’s worth visiting Cala de Cap Roig, which features two different settings – one with an Instagram-worthy climbable rock offering an unmatched vantage point of the surrounding areas, and another that’s perfect for sunbathing and swimming. For a more traditional beach outing, Platja de la Llosa in Cambrils is known for its fine golden sand, calm shallow waters, and popularity with locals, while Cala de Sa Futadera offers a hidden-by-cliffs experience. Just be prepared to descend said cliffs, and to brave chilly (but beautiful!) waters once you’ve arrived.

Experience Catalan Culture

Because Catalonia is considered to be one of Spain’s autonomous communities, it not only has its own language (Catalan), but myriad traditions, foods, dishes, traditions and fiestas, as well.

A few experiences to include on your itinerary:

• National Day of Catalonia. Held on September 11th, this day commemorates the defeat of the Catalans by the Spanish in 1714. Expect to hear Catalan spoken almost exclusively, to spot Catalan flags at every turn, and to glimpse the obvious regional pride and passion locals have for their culture.
• Catalan language classes. Though Catalans are likely to speak Spanish and English, immersing yourself in the culture via learning  a few key phrases will help your cause in navigating the region – and earn you points with the locals.
• Experiencing a castell. A tradition unique to Catalonia – in 2010, the region received UNESCO protection, making the practice culturally exclusive – castelling is the practice of building human towers. Though popular throughout the region, we suggest heading to Tarragona, which is known for castell contests that reward the tallest (and quickest) assembled and disassembled tower.

Cycle to See the Sights

A vacation to Catalonia isn’t complete without a tour of the region by bike. Whether you prefer to leisurely bike along pristine coastline, stop and shop in postcard-perfect towns and villages, explore ancient architecture in quaint fishing villages, or visit wine cellars, olive oil mills and take in the picturesque rolling country side after a foodie feast, cycling tours are one of the best ways to experience this area’s beauty.

Local Catalonian Cuisine

Brimming with creative gastronomic delights, Catalonia has become renowned for its cuisine and the culture that surrounds it. Thanks to its proximity to the coast, seafood dishes abound, as do locally grown vegetables which include mushrooms, artichokes, tomatoes, red peppers and aubergines. And because the area has plentiful mountainous areas, there are also sheep and pigs that round out the area’s Mar i muntanya (in catalan) or Mary montaña (in spanish)  (Sea and Mountain) offerings.

Do like the locals and make sure you try vegetarian Pa Amb Tomaquet, which is toasted farm bread rubbed with fresh tomatoes, optional garlic, and then drizzled with oil and salt, and Arros a La Cassola, a delicious paella cooked in an earthware pot (the cassola), with a protein (usually shellfish, pork ribs or rabbit), short-grain rice and a garlic, onion, and tomato sauce. Fish lovers will enjoy savoury Fideuas, which is similar to a seafood paella but features short noodles instead of rice, with allioli (oil and garlic sauce).
