In the morning we will take a boat to Kicker Rock, which is located off the coast of San Cristóbal and known as the Sleeping Lion (Leon Dormido) because of its resemblance. This is the remains of a lava cone eroded by the sea, with two vertical rocks rising 500 ft (150 m) above the ocean that form a small channel, navigable only by small boats. Kicker Rock is widely considered the Galapagos Island’s natural monument and is a spectacular site to visit due to the many tropical birds, frigates, and blue-footed boobies that fill the sky. Beneath the sea, the crystal waters offer a brilliant show of colorful fish, such as rainbow fish and sharks, including the hammerhead and white tip. After lunch, we will spend some time on the beach and then travel back to the hotel.

In the morning we will take a short flight over to Isabela Island, the largest island in the archipelago. It is this area that has reported the most volcanic activity in the Galapagos. The island was formed by six shield volcanoes: Alcedo, Cerra Azul, Darwin, Ecuador, Sierra Negra and Wolf. Five of them are still active, which makes the island one of the most volcanically active places on earth! During our island crossing, be on the lookout for dolphins and whales (July to October.)
In the afternoon we will explore the beautiful coastline by bike. Taking an exclusive trail through an incredible ecosystem, we will enjoy a wide variety of wildlife including flamingos, marine iguanas and giant tortoises. We start with a visit to the Wall of Tears, a massive wall built of lava rock. As we continue our ride along the coast, we will explore pristine, white sandy beaches, mangrove forests and lagoons. This area is filled with a plethora of bird life, including American oyster catchers, herons, flamingos, finches and many other shore birds, as well as the ubiquitous sea lions and marine iguanas. Today, explore the amazing formations of lava created by the last eruption of the volcanic island along the seashore. This magical place has historically been filmed by BBC and National Geographic for their documentaries. It is a labyrinth of lava arches comprised of crystal clear water and is full of sea turtles, eagle rays, sea lions, sharks and more. The turtles navigate their own highway from the mangroves to the open sea through “Los Tuneles”. Here, we will have the best snorkeling opportunity with these beautiful animals, including the curious Galapagos penguins playing around. Before or after the trip, you can enjoy some optional activities such as snorkeling at “Concha de Perla”, surfing lessons, biking or just relaxing on the exotic white-sand beaches of Isabela Island. We highly recommend taking some time to visit the giant tortoise breeding center, which is located within walking distance from the hotel and free to visit.

Our destination is the rim of Sierra Negra Crater, an active volcano which last erupted in June 2018. Upon arrival, we take in breathtaking views and explore the circumference of the massive, lava-filled crater, a caldera that is over six miles across at its widest point. If we have the energy, we can continue our hike to Volcan Chico, a secondary crater that has a wild landscape of puffing fumaroles and colorful lava formations; great examples of the dramatic geological events that have formed the Galapagos Islands over millennia. In the afternoon we will visit Tintoreras Islet by kayak, located a short distance from Puerto Villamil and home to a great variety of wildlife. Its turquoise, crystalline waters are inhabited by white-tipped reef sharks, Galapagos Penguins, marine turtles and sea lions. One of its beaches, surrounded by mangroves, is one of the few sites where marine iguanas can reproduce successfully.

We have just returned home from our fabulous trip. It exceeded our expectations, by far. The scenery, activities, wildlife, and hotels were all amazing. Our guide did a fantastic job taking care of every detail for us. His knowledge and caring personality made this one of the most special vacations we have ever had. I wouldn’t change one single thing. Thank you for all of your assistance during this very difficult time for all. We look forward to many more adventures with you in the future.
My husband and I are repeat travelers with Pure Adventures. We loved biking in Italy and biking in South Dakota. Our most recent trip with a group of friends to the Galápagos Islands far exceeded our expectations. The islands and the wildlife and nature are spectacular. What made the trip so special was our expert guide. Our trip was specific to us. The food and lodgings were wonderful. I can’t imagine this trip being so special without Pure Adventures. Loren and Mar worked with us as we had to reschedule this trip twice due to COVID. We are already thinking about our next Pure Adventures trip!
We took our family on this trip for the kids’ spring break and it was incredible! The kids (teens!!!) really enjoyed seeing all of the wildlife and learning about the giant tortoises at the research center. Seeing things like sharks and rays, sea tortoises, sea lions, just casually here and there, was really special. Penguins are a must! Activities were fun for the whole family and the guides had a lot of passion and knowledge for what they were doing. We appreciated having the guided experiences but also some time on our own – it was the best of both worlds and worked out well for us. This is the best way to see the Galapagos and our family is really happy with how Pure Adventures took care of all of the details. Everything leading up to the trip and during, was perfect. Once in a life time trip for us – thank you!
