Overnight: Piran
Today begins at 9:00 AM with a tour orientation and bike set‑up. Your self-guided Slovenia and Croatia bike tour commences from the sunlit lanes of Piran toward the rolling landscapes of Croatian Istria. Glide past the shimmering Secovlje Salt Fields, where white salt pans stretch across the wetlands, then continue through gentle hills to Buje for a relaxed lunch. The final climb brings you to Grožnjan, a stone‑built hilltop village wrapped in panoramic views that sweep from patchwork valleys to the distant sea. Its narrow lanes echo with music and creativity, lined with galleries, studios, and open doorways where artists work in the afternoon light. Settle onto a stone bench or café terrace and soak in the easy rhythm of this artistic haven.
Distance: 38 km /24 mi, +557/-284 m
Highlights: Coastal cycling, salt pans, olive oil tasting & arts community
Overnight: Grožnjan
Continue your self-guided Croatia cycling tour through the rolling Istrian hinterland, passing picturesque villages tucked into green hills as you make your way toward Motovun, the region’s most iconic medieval town. Perched high above the valley on an ancient hill‑fort, Motovun rises in layers of stone walls, a 13th‑century bell tower, and the grand Church of St. Stephen, all surrounded by forests once prized for shipbuilding oak. Today the town is known for its summer film festival and its timeless atmosphere, where cobbled lanes open to sweeping views of vineyards and river valleys. Istria’s rich wine country unfolds all around you, shaped by a mild Mediterranean climate and diverse soils that produce some of Croatia’s finest reds and whites. In the evening you can visit a welcoming cellar nestled among the vines to sample local varietals, or choose an optional truffle‑hunting experience with a family who has been searching these forests for generations.
Optional Add-On: Truffle hunting experience
Meals: breakfast
Distance: 31 km/19 mi, +566/-588 m; additional loop available 16–24 km/10-15 mi
Highlights: Picturesque hilltop villages, Motovun, wine country, optional truffle hunting
Overnight: Motovun
Ride out of Motovun’s hilltop heights and follow quiet roads through blue‑hued Istria, where each mile of your self‑guided Croatia bike tour brings wider views of vineyards, valleys, and the shimmering Adriatic ahead. Your day ends in coastal Poreč, home to the UNESCO‑listed Euphrasian Basilica, a 6th‑century Byzantine masterpiece famed for its golden mosaics and elegant three‑nave design. As evening settles in, the seaside promenade glows with warm light, lively cafés, and the unmistakable energy of an Istrian summer night by the sea.
Meals: breakfast
Distance: 29 km/18 mi, +306/ -566 m
Highlights: Cycling to the Adriatic, UNESCO Euphrasian Basilica, coastal old‑town charm
Overnight: Poreč
Continue cycling south toward the Lim Fjord area, the largest bay in Istria and a haven for fresh seafood. The quiet roads of the Lim Valley trace the edge of a submerged karst canyon often mistaken for a fjord. Thanks to underwater springs, the low‑salinity water is ideal for fish and shellfish farming, so don’t miss the fresh oysters from the local shack.
Take a break for a relaxed lunch at one of the bay’s waterfront restaurants—this is also where the 1950s film The Vikings was shot. By afternoon, you’ll reach Rovinj, one of Istria’s most romantic coastal towns. Once an island, it still carries a strong Venetian influence, crowned by the bell tower of St. Euphemia. Today, Rovinj blends fishing‑village charm with stylish cafés, excellent gastronomy, and a vibrant arts scene. Wander the narrow cobbled streets, explore small galleries, and keep your camera ready for pastel façades and glowing sunsets. Later this afternoon, our representative will collect your bikes.
Optional Add-On: Consider spending an extra night here to soak in the town’s charm and add a rewarding ride to Pula and its historic amphitheatre. Or, we can arrange a visit Brijuni National Park by boat!
Meals: breakfast
Distance: 54 km/34 mi, +711/-693 m
Highlights: Lim Fjord scenery, fresh oysters, scenic ride via Vrsar, sunset arrival in Rovinj
