Portugal bike tour Porto Self-Guided: Speckled with cliffs and seaside villages, Portugal’s Atlantic coast is warm, sandy, and inviting. It is also great for cycling, which is why Pure Adventures Tours has put together this seven-night self-guided cycling tour along the best of Portugal’s Atlantic coastline. The Portugal Coastal Highlights Tour follows the coastline from northern to central Portugal, all while discovering the cultural and natural beauties of this region. The route starts in the vibrant city of Porto, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, full of history and culture to discover. It is also an area renowned for its Port wine and cellars; you will not be disappointed! On the way, you’ll cross the São Jacinto Dunes Natural Reserve and the Ria de Aveiro, on the estuary of Vouga River, which marks this region and follows you all the way to Aveiro, known as “little Venice,” with its typical moliceiro boats. As you head further south, the route will cross dense pine forests and dunes, allowing you to enjoy some peace and quiet. Be sure to stop at the small beaches along the way to have a drink and gaze out at the glittering, blue sea.

Today you will cycle on calm and serene roads, with fresh ocean breezes and sea views. On the way, you will cross several small beaches, such as Valadares, Francelos and Miramar, by cycling on a path near the coastline. Although the water might be too cold for some, these beaches are a great spot to take a dip and enjoy the sun (if the weather conditions allow it!) Miramar Beach is especially worth a stop to visit the little chapel that sits on the top of some rocks by the shore; the famous Capela do Senhor da Pedra.

On the way and in the area of Ovar, there is the church of Santa Maria de Válega, known for its beautiful, brightly colored tiles on the facade; it truly is a must see. BEFORE TRIP:
Clear, timely communication from Mar about cost, what to expect, what to pack
Flexibility in last minute change to e-bikes
IN PORTUGAL:
Orientation to map nav app and bikes by Oracio was clear and comprehensive
The rides each day were SUPERB! We esp. loved how much countryside, open space and beachfront were included. Lots of off-pavement thru farms, forests, along canals. There was one 40-mile day that was a bit too much “off road” for our taste, but still very fun.
It was nice to stay 2 nites in the same town. This allowed for day trip to a castle outside Furadouro up hilly terrain. Really glad to have e-bikes this day.
Boutique hotels were comfortable, clean and scenically located. Breakfast buffet every morning a big plus! The hotel with rooftop pool and jacuzzi overlooking the Atlantic (Praia de Mira) was esp. memorable!
E-bikes rock! Glad we made the switch as this allowed us to enjoy the rides each day and not be exhausted when we rolled into a new town
The gear that came with e-bike was also top-notch: handlebar bag, trunk bag
Ease of getting back to Porto. A lovely young man, Victor, drove us back in a van.
There was a bit of a learning curve using the Ride with GPS app, but eventually we got the hang of it.
Very happy with Pure Adventures. Already talking about where we might bike next!
We did the road bike version of this tour and had a great trip. The accommodations, maps, information, etc were all great. No issues! Highly recommend to anyone interested in traveling thru Portugal by bike!
Portugal – we come back soon!!!
Memories for all lifetime!
Our Bucket List Trip! Back from our Portugal cycling holiday and everything was perfect! We enjoyed staying at different stops along the tour and our hybrid bikes suited us nicely. Us old fogies managed to pedals our way through Portugal without issue! (A miracle considering my recent hip replacement.) Every detail was explained clearly and Mar always quick to respond. Well done Pure Adventures team. Thinking about Tuscany for next year or Provence!?!
Such an incredible trip. Loved the variety of routes. The hotels went above our expectations with incredible breakfasts. The bikes were great for the variety of surfaces. We just had a great time…it was 3 years in the making but so worth the wait. Thanks again!
