Day 3Cocora Valley & Coffee - Salento

This morning begins with a short (25-minute) flight to Armenia Airport, just outside the Cocora Valley and the vibrant town of Salento. From here, we head west into Colombia’s renowned “Coffee Triangle.” Unlike its Bermuda namesake, the only thing you might lose here is track of time while enjoying the stunning scenery! This region, celebrated for producing some of the world’s finest coffee, owes its excellence to its equatorial location, rich soil, ideal climate, and perfectly balanced rainfall.

As we wind through the enchanting towns nestled in the folds of the Cocora Valley, take in the vivid colors and lush vegetation surrounding you. Recognized as part of the UNESCO-listed Coffee Cultural Landscape of Colombia, this area is steeped in history and tradition. A visit to the Recuca coffee farm offers a deeper dive into the magic of coffee production—observe how beans are grown, hand-harvested, roasted, and transformed into the perfect brew. You’ll even learn to identify different types of beans before savoring a freshly brewed cup of paradise.

Afterward, enjoy a leisurely stroll through Salento, a charming colonial town brimming with small shops, colorful balconies overlooking cobbled streets, and sunlit, terracotta-tiled rooftops. It’s the perfect way to end a day immersed in Colombia’s coffee culture.

Meals: breakfast & lunch
Overnight: Salento

Day 4Hiking in the Cocora Valley

Walk among giants in the stunning Cocora Valley, home to the majestic wax palm—the tallest palm trees in the world. Arriving by jeep, the warm breeze envelops you as we journey through rolling green hills. A challenging yet rewarding five-hour hike leads us to the enchanting Acaime Reserve, where playful hummingbirds flit about, putting on a mesmerizing show for visitors. These feathered performers, unafraid of human company, are sure to captivate you. To top it off, a hearty lunch of local cuisine serves as a well-earned reward for your incredible hike.

Afterward, we return to Salento, where you’ll have free time to explore at your own pace. In the evening, we’ll come together to embrace a beloved local tradition by playing an exciting game of Tejo.

For an extra treat, we recommend heading to Alto de La Cruz—a breathtaking viewpoint overlooking the town—for postcard-perfect photos to remember the day.

Day 5Biking Cascada Santa Rita Waterfall

From Salento, we begin our downhill ride, surrounded by stunning 360° views of the mountains in the coffee belt. Along the way, we’ll pass vibrant plantations of coffee, bananas, guayaba, blackberries, and oranges, painting a picture of Colombia’s agricultural richness. After crossing the Quindio River, we’ll dismount and continue on foot toward the coffee farm where the waterfall is nestled.

Following an old railway track, we’ll cross charming bridges and wander through tunnels draped in lush, overgrown foliage, all guided by the gentle, soothing sounds of the cascade. Standing 15 meters tall, the waterfall cascades into a tranquil pool at its base—perfect for a refreshing dip to recharge.

In the afternoon, we’ll return to Salento by Jeep. This is truly a special day, offering serene landscapes and a tranquil route where we’ll encounter only a few other cyclists, making it an exclusive and memorable experience.

Day 6Casual Cartagena Exploration

This morning begins with a flight to Cartagena, the most visited city in Colombia—and for good reason! Founded in the 16th century, this historic Spanish New World trade hub showcases its rich past through cannon-lined fortress walls, winding alleyways, and colorful stucco buildings that sharply contrast with the modern skyscrapers of Boca Grande, the lively downtown known for its vibrant nightlife. Let the Caribbean breeze guide you as you stroll along cobblestone streets adorned with flower-filled balconies and the lively sounds of music at every turn. Cartagena is a feast for the senses and a celebration of life.

Our afternoon takes us up to the San Felipe Castle. Perched on the hill overlooking the city, this fortress served as a stronghold against invading forces for over 200 years. Take in a jaw-dropping view of the bay below and learn about the rise and fall of this formidable structure.

Family Traveller

Our family did the Private Colombia Coffee Multisport Tour for spring break and it’s been our best spring break trip to date! We have three teenagers ages 13, 15 and 17, and they had a blast – they were never bored. The guides were awesome and really took care of us, sometimes adding things into the day based on what they thought we’d like or how we felt! We were hesitant to go to Colombia but it was the best family vacation ever. Thank you Pure Adventures!

This was such a fun tour! Here are our thoughts:

Bogota-We thought a full day there was the perfect amount. Loved the food tour and what we did there. I’m sure there’s even so much more to see than we did, but we tend to enjoy the smaller towns more than big cities. I really liked doing the food tour at the beginning of the trip-thought it was a great introduction to Colombian food and that was helpful later in the trip.

Salento-loved it! We loved the town, the coffee tasting, the biking, the hiking. I’d say this was definitely our favorite part. We thought the location of the hotel was great. The guides for both the hiking and the biking were great and would definitely use them again. Such a beautiful area!

Cartagena-We really liked the hotel here. Great AC and a really hot shower. 🙂 And also beautiful. We also loved the private boat trip… Loved walking around the city. After dark was an experience for sure. 🙂 We never felt unsafe at all and everything really was so well-organized. I’d love more international trips like this for families!
