Italy – Sardinia Discovery Bike Tour

(5 Reviews)

Sardinia Self Guided Bike Tour: Discover the charm that the Phoenicians and Romans saw when they first came to Sardinia. Take this journey and see remnants of the Punic Roman seaport towns and the necropolis of Nora and Calasetta. See the endless summer villages down the coast and the unique Genoese style minor Islands of San Pietro and Sant’Antioco. After cycling and exploration, indulge your hunger with the fine typical cuisine and the wines of Sulcis Peninsula, which you can only find here. Cycle along the Green Coast riddled with old villages such as Buggerru, where you will stop for a night of coastal wonders. Continue along the southern coast before winding your way up one of the most scenic climbs of southern Sardinia: up and over beautiful Mount’ Cidro towards your final destination and accommodation in Guspini, situated in the Campidano flats. For those wanting an additional day, we can add a loop ride towards the beaches of Pistis and the dunes of Torre dei Corsari, or you can spend a shopping day in Cagliari, accessible by bus or by train from Guspini.

Itinerary Sardinia Self Guided Bike Tour

Day 1Welcome to Pula

Welcome to Pula! Arrive to your first hotel on your own; your welcome reception and orientation is at 5:00 PM today. At this time, a Pure Adventures representative will fit your bikes and introduce you to each day’s ride. Then enjoy a welcome gelato, together at the hotel bar. If time permits, take a spin to Nora and explore the area!

Meals: on own
Highlights: possible ride to Nora
Overnight: Pula

Day 2Teulada & the South Coast: 47 km / 29 mi

Cycling out of Pula along beaches and Spanish watchtowers, the pristine, crystalline waters will make you think you are in the Caribbean. It is the Mediterranean vegetation and in particular, the juniper trees (ginepro) typical of this region, that reminds you are in beautiful Sardinia! After warming up on the flats, the rolling hills ready us for the coastal ride along craggy cliffs with ancient fortified watchtowers, alternating with little sandy coves and long stretches of soft, sandy beaches. On the last part of the ride you’ll descend to Teulada, famous for the longevity of its inhabitants and for their history of achievements. Tonight, stay at one of our very favorite places in Teulada and enjoy a delicious dinner there, as well.

Meals: breakfast & dinner
Distance: +606 m, 47 km / 29 mi
Highlights: beautiful coastal riding
Overnight: Teulada

Day 3Carloforte & Sulcis Wine Area: 57 km / 35 mi

Bike from Teulada to Calasetta via Sant’Anna Arresi or Santadi; take the ferry (40 min) to Carloforte on San Pietro Island. A long flat stretch becomes very exciting with the addition of pink flamingos and a salt mine crossing, over to the first minor island of Sant’Antioco. Your cycling destination today is the little Genoese-style fisherman village of Carloforte, found on the second minor island of San Pietro. Take the opportunity to explore the little and pretty village of Calasetta, just before taking the ferry to San Pietro Island. Carloforte welcomes visitors with a harbor full of brightly colored sailboats. It’s peaceful and quiet here but at the same time, this is a thriving community offering all amenities and a lively and friendly atmosphere. Tonight, enjoy the local cuisine – it is a highlight not to be missed.

Meals: breakfast
Distance: +277 m, 57 km / 35 mi
Highlights: flamingos, San Pietro Island, Calasetta, Carloforte
Overnight: Carloforte

Day 4Carloforte, San Pietro Island & Pink Flamingos: 43 km / 27 mi

Take a loop ride of Carloforte, dedicated to the old Italian King, Carlo Felice and famous for its maritime schools and tuna fishing. Enjoy the openness of this minor island as you ride its wild rugged landscape seemingly in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea. The rugged geologic makeup and atmosphere takes you back in time and makes you feel like you are the first one to explore this island. Once back in Carloforte, all of the local restaurants will offer a great lunch menu for you, and they are famous for their tuna paired with the fine wines of the Sulcis.

Option to add: Local speciality cooking class! This is a request subject to availability and must be booked in advance. It takes place at Bottega dell’Isola in Carloforte. This is a boutique restaurant in the historical center of the town; their specialties are home made pasta and tuna fish. In this class you can learn how to make local, traditional pasta. Guests will be involved in the manual preparation of local pasta, which is used for the typical dish “Pasticcio alla carlofortina”. Guests will also prepare a Genoese pesto with fresh tomatoes and tuna oil. Menu includes: Octopus salad with potatoes and selargini capers, Carlofortina pie (the pasta is made with Sardinian durum wheat semolina, stone-ground and certified organic farming), tuna of Carlofortina, local dessert, and wine. For min 2 up to max 6 persons. Please inquire for current rates.

Meals: breakfast
Distance: +668 m, 43 km / 27 mi
Highlights: rugged landscapes, local tuna dishes
Overnight: Carloforte

Day 5Buggerru and the Green Coast: 41 km / 25 mi

Leaving the minor island of San Pietro by ferry (40 min,) you will arrive to Portoscuso to start today’s ride. From the port, the next village is Gonnesa, then the fantastic uphill to Nebida, in front of Pan di Zucchero, an outcropping rock 133 meters high with two natural arches. Originally, the villages of the area were created as mining villages. With the mines no longer in use, some of them have been converted into museums, such as Porto Flavia. Now look at the coast: stunning views of long sandy beaches and rugged promontories connecting mining towns to mining towns all the way along the coast. Your destination for today is Buggerru, a little mining village on the sea with cliffs and mountains cradling it within its own gulf. Here you can choose between many delicious restaurants and don’t miss out on a very good gelato opportunity in the main square.

Meals: breakfast
Distance: +770 m, 41 km / 25 mi
Highlights: Pan di Zucchero natural arches, mining villages
Overnight: Buggerru

Day 6Guspini & the Campidano Flat: 50 km / 31 mi

After the village of Buggerru, you reach the long sandy beach of San Niccolao and then you can stop in Portixeddu for a cappuccino or a light snack. After 14 km you are warmed up enough and can face the winding and scenic hills of Monte Cidro, a natural pass which takes you in the direction of Arbus and Montevecchio, old mining villages. Make sure to take in the natural beauty of the landscape as you climb and cross the pass, which is full of cork oak and juniper growing between the rocks, before taking the downhill into Arbus. The mine of Montevecchio is now an important site of industrial archaeology, part of the Geominerario Storicoparks and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. After reaching Montevechio, enjoy the winding and scenic downhill into the town of Guspini. Depending on its schedule, we recommend dining at your hotel’s restaurant tonight!

Meals: breakfast
Distance: +950 m, 50 km / 31 mi
Highlights: Monte Cidro pass, rock formations, juniper & beaches, Montevecchio
Overnight: Guspini

Hello from the Johnson family! This was our first self-guided bike tour as a family and our first time to Sardinia! For a family traveling with extremely active (put us to shame) older children, this was the ideal vacation. We could go at our own speed, allowing for the kids to go ahead a bit if they were feeling zippy. Sardinia is quite the hidden gem, and we loved our time there. We could easily have spent another week there just relaxing and enjoying all of the good food and WINE! At least we earned the cals!

Sardinia – what can I say?!? Sardinia is BEAUTIFUL there and we fell in love with the warmth of the people and their culture. Cycling around the island was a great way to experience everything there was to offer. Even with the occasional wrong turn (we were too busy staring at the landscape,) we found charming places to have coffee and try the local food. We were hesitant to visit Sardinia because we hadn’t heard a lot about it, but we are SO glad that we made the trip! We will be back!

We recently finished a fantastic bike tour in southern Sardinia with Pure Adventure (Sardinia Private Self Guided Tour). Our trip was in mid August of 2019. This was our first cycling trip organized by someone else. We absolutely loved it. First off, even though Sardinia is really hot in mid August, we enjoyed every minute of our vacation. All the cute beach cafes were open and the weather, while hot, made the beach experience perfect. We would wake up early, cycle to one of the many spectacular beaches enjoy our favorite beverages and often rent chairs and an umbrella then continuing along our journey. The food in Sardinia is great and the itinerary was perfect. We met our local contact Mauro on the first day, got our bikes (we upgraded and enjoyed super light carbon fiber cycling bikes that were new and better than our gear at home) as well as the maps and itinerary. The map instructions were very easy to follow and the roads were lovely with options for shorter and longer rides each day with restaurant recommendations (all great). Our luggage arrived promptly, it was always there when we arrived at each hotel which was really appreciated. We did not upgrade on hotels. They were a mix of really great and fine and all the places we stayed were very welcoming, well situated, clean, quiet, allowed us to secure the bikes and had air conditioning (a relief for a mid August vacation). We really loved the itinerary of this trip, especially Carloforte, which is a super cute town on an island so we took our bikes on the ferry and even took a cooking class (thank you Mauro!).It was really nice having a local contact. We are already planning our next trip with Pure Adventure for next summer. Here are some tips if you end up doing a beach adventure in Sardinia (pack covers for your biking shoes that slide over the cleats so you don’t ruin them walking around, pack very small towels that can roll into the little saddle bags, bring change for the showers at the beach since they are all open in the summer with changing rooms, pack a small wash cloth in your bike bag in case you have to fix a chain, an extra water bottle each for your bike since the bike only comes with one each, bring a clothes line and soap since you will likely wash out your bike clothes at each stop since it will dry the same day and a portable iron if you want to press any clothes since no hotels in Sardinia provided irons in the hotel rooms). We also really appreciated the follow through and communications from Richie, our travel adviser in preparation for our trip! The whole vacation from start to finish exceeded every expectation.
