Normandy Self-Guided Bike Tour:
Embark on a powerful and scenic 5-night self-guided cycling journey through Normandy, where the echoes of World War II meet the charm of the French countryside. Starting in the medieval town of Bayeux—home to the famous tapestry—you’ll pedal through landscapes that witnessed some of the most pivotal moments of the 20th century.
This thoughtfully designed route takes you along the D-Day landing beaches, including Omaha and Utah, and through historic towns like Arromanches, Carentan, and Sainte-Mère-Église, the first town liberated by American paratroopers. Along the way, you’ll visit moving memorials, museums, and cemeteries that honor the bravery and sacrifice of Allied forces.
Beyond the history, enjoy quiet country roads, coastal breezes, and local flavors—from fresh oysters in Isigny-sur-Mer to Normandy’s signature cider and Calvados. With handpicked accommodations, detailed route notes, and the freedom to explore at your own pace, this tour offers a seamless blend of reflection, discovery, and adventure.

Cycling along Utah Beach in Normandy offers a powerful blend of history, natural beauty, and local flavor. The route takes you past two of the region’s most significant war cemeteries: the solemn and beautifully maintained American Cemetery at Colleville-sur-Mer, overlooking Omaha Beach, and the German Cemetery at La Cambe, a quiet and contemplative site shaded by ancient oaks.
After visiting Colleville-sur-Mer, you can choose between two scenic routes. The longer ride hugs the coastline, leading you to the charming fishing harbor of Grandcamp-Maisy, where colorful boats bob in the water and fresh seafood is always on offer. The shorter inland route winds through peaceful countryside and traditional Norman villages, offering a more relaxed pace.
Both routes converge near Isigny-sur-Mer, a town renowned for its rich dairy heritage—think world-class butter, creamy cheeses, and artisanal ice cream. The nearby Bay of Veys is also home to some of Normandy’s finest oysters, cultivated in nutrient-rich waters and served fresh at local markets and cafés.

Your day begins with a peaceful ride through the marshlands that stretch between Isigny-sur-Mer and Carentan—landscapes once central to the dramatic events of D-Day. These wetlands, crisscrossed by quiet country roads and canals, offer a serene contrast to their storied past, where Allied paratroopers landed under fire in June 1944.
After a break in Carentan, a town known for its strategic role in the Normandy campaign, you continue along tranquil backroads toward Sainte-Marie-du-Mont or Sainte-Mère-Église. This leg of the journey is rich in history and atmosphere, with hedgerows and stone farmhouses lining the route.
Sainte-Mère-Église holds a special place in WWII history as one of the first towns liberated by American forces. The iconic church still displays a replica of paratrooper John Steele, whose parachute famously caught on the steeple during the night drop. Nearby, the Airborne Museum offers immersive exhibits that bring the stories of the 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions to life.

If the weather’s right, take a refreshing swim along the wide, peaceful beaches that once saw the first steps of liberation. For those up for a longer loop, pedal out to the charming fishing village of Saint-Vaast-la-Hougue, known for its Vauban fortifications (a UNESCO site) and fresh oysters.

Highly recommend this Normandy bike tour with Pure Adventures. We have taken 3 bike trips with them now and this was one of our favorites. We loved this historical stop, food, cheese especially and wine! Mount Sant Michelle was a highlight. Great trip!
My wife and I had always wanted to cycle through Normandy and we were worried about not having a guided tour, but this trip ticked all of the boxes. Our concerns were not needed seeing as we were given a most wonderful and thorough welcome and overview at our “trip briefing.” Hotels were good and we enjoyed the upgrade in Bayeux. We had some rain a few days, but otherwise we had perfect cycling weather. C’est la vie! Food and wine in this area will satisfy the most discerning food critic!
As self-proclaimed “history buffs” we were skeptical if this bike tour would be satisfactory, but it easily exceeded our expectations. We were able to visit all of the historical stops and sites we had hoped to see, and doing this from the seat of a bike is the way to go! The self guided touring format was a good fit for us and if you are able to navigate and enjoy not being with a large group, you will also enjoy the tour. One of our hotels was a little noisy due to some D-day celebrations taking place near by. Other than that, we were pleased and happy with the tour.
Brian and I thoroughly enjoyed our experience on this Pure Adventure tour. This was our third bike tour with them and we will be back for a fourth! The hotels were easy to get to and we enjoyed the route. MSM is very crowded but that is the price to pay for ticking that box.
We did a custom family bike tour of Normandy with our 2 boys aged 8 and 10. Our Pure Adventures guide was a wonderful guide. His in depth knowledge of the area, the history, the food enriched our experience. The kids loved spending time with him and hearing his funny stories. The tour was well organized. The parents were able to bike to the next destination. The children joined us for 20-30km and then did a tour with our same guide. Everyone was happy and had stories to tell when we all met for dinner. Normandy is an ideal location for a family bike tour.
