I had wanted to do a bike tour, but it was hard to find one that would work for all our kids’ ages; 14, 25, and 29, with different cycling abilities. I had my doubts about the support doing self-guided, but I don’t like being part of a large tour group either. The idea of not having to wait for the slowest person in the group to catch up, or feeling pressured to rush breakfast to meet the start of the ride was very appealing. We also took advantage of the flexibility by shortening our ride with a train trip one day. it suited us very well in the end and was a great family experience.
We didn’t quite meet the guidelines for a 3/5 level of difficulty, so the e-bikes were essential for us. We loved the ability to experience a place by bike though, seeing things on that scale and not in a car, yet with the ability to cover a lot more miles than just hiking. The scenery was gorgeous. The routes were great with nice bike trails or small roads, except for only about 5 miles on a busy fast highway.
The local support was great. They responded to us quickly when we had issues and helped us resolve our problems. All the pick ups were on time and easy, with friendly people. We were happy with all the hotels. Even the lowest rated Klinec B&B had killer views and we got a great 6 course meal there that night.
We got a little tired moving hotels most nights, and in retrospect, I would have booked extra days to stay in one place and do a loop ride there such as in Bohinj and or Goriska Brda and explore the areas more.
Highlights for we were riding down into Lake Bled with its magnificent scenery, food tour in Ljubljana, riding over the hill and biking down into Goriska Brda which was glorious, and finding truffles in our truffle hunt with the most adorable dog.
Overall, the trip to Slovenia was fabulous. What a beautiful country with very diverse cultures and landscapes. we enjoyed the various additional events such as the cheese tasting the wine, the wine tasting, the cooking class. Everybody had different favorites so it’s hard to say just one! Every day had some extended climbs that challenged us.
