Keen to appreciate its uniqueness, the Convento de Sao Paulo invest in a new form of status in relation to his location. Housed in a 600 hectare estate, our first bet is on the rural surrounds. Already with a wide range of programs of agricultural activities, as well as two walking or mountain biking trails, the Hotel is now preparing a series of new products that allow our guests a rural experience.
Secluded in the quietness and isolation of the western slopes of the Serra d'Ossa mountain, the Monastery of Sao Paulo was built in 1182 by hermit monks seeking the ideal place to live and pray in peace and quiet. In the heart of the Alentejo province, halfway between the town of Estremoz and the village of Redondo, it is now a comfortable and refined Hotel. Several historical accounts confirm that the convent has lodged, over the centuries, some prominent figures of Portugal's history like King D. Sebastiao, King D. Joao IV and D. Catarina de Braganca who, in 1661, married the English King Charles II. The library of the Convent still holds a canvas depicting King D. Sebastiao's stay at the convent, in 1577, on his way to Northern Africa where he died in the battle of Alcacer Quibir. These and other tales and stories are just some of several different reasons that make the Hotel Convento de S. Paulo a marvellous and exciting place to stay.
Portugal bicycle tour with Pousada deluxe hotel stays
The Pousada of Estremoz is situated in a privileged place, as is the Castle Estremoz. It is an authentic museum which has a range of antic furniture, wall tapestries, iron decorative pieces and porcelain from other times.
D. Dinis ordered the construction of this building for his wife the queen Santa Isabel, which has given its name to the Pousada. Placed in the old city, this was the stage of battles, love and treason.
This luxury hotel in Estremoz offers from its gardens and pool, a magnificent panoramic view of Estremoz and the Alentejo plain.
The Pousada's 29 rooms are spacious and worthy of royalty with beautiful canopy beds which invite you to stay for a relaxing night.
The Pousada de Vila Viçosa, opened in 1996, is installed in the historical centre of this Alentejo city. The Pousada is found in the old Convento Real das Chagas de Cristo (The Royal Convent of Stigmas of Christ) ordered built by D. Jaime, the forth Duke of Bragança in the sixteenth century. D. Jaime ordered the building of this religious house to serve as Pantheon for the Ladies of the House and to welcome his daughters from his second marriage who could not decently marry.
In the same family for over 200 years, the estate has its heart at the monte, an ancient small farming village, which has been brought carefully back to life as a remarkable hotel of understated luxury, surrounded by ancient holm oaks, olive groves and vineyards. Here, the feeling of being at home is intimately connected with the sense of belonging to the vastness of the land. In Alentejo, farm and landscape soon become your home.
Staying the night at the Pousada de Évora, the Loios Convent, means visiting a long distant passed having the privilege of reliving the history of every stone, every object including the simple and rudimental cubicles of the old Canon Regulars’ dormitories, which today have been converted into bedrooms with affable decoration.
The walls of the city of Évora which have been classified as a Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO hide in their interiors one of most beautiful Pousadas of Portugal. This luxurious hotel in Évora is found in the historical center of the city, between the Gothic Cathedral of Évora and the Temple of Diana. Here you will find that the history, the finesse and the luxury are the vectors that gave rise to this majestic hotel.
