Culture and History
Barcelona is the capital of Catalonia and the second largest city in Spain. In terms of popularity, it also happens to be the 16th most visited city in the entire world – and for good reason. It boasts an incredibly dynamic atmosphere that is teeming with life and excitement, yet still somehow maintains its ancient roots. There is so much to do and see in this eclectic city, you could stay for weeks and never be bored. Architectural Masterpieces
In fact, many of the works that were designed by famed architect Antoni Gaudí have been given the honor of being named as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. For instance, the Sagrada Familia, which was constructed in the late 1800’s, combines Gothic and Art Nouveau styles and features a series of magnificent cylindrical towers on its façade. Art critics and architectural experts alike tout the church as one of the most spectacular structures in the world. Then there’s Park Guell, another masterpiece of Gaudí. This garden complex features architectural designs, mosaic art, a museum and plenty of wildlife. And, of course, there’s Casa Mila, an imposing structure known for its bold, self-supporting stone facade and intriguing wrought iron décor.
Of course, Antoni Gaudí wasn’t the only architect in town. There are plenty of other buildings and structures throughout Barcelona that have garnered attention over the centuries. One such building, the Cathedral of the Holy Cross and Saint Eulalia, or the Barcelona Cathedral for short, was constructed between the 13thand 15th centuries, and has been modified and improved several times since. This massive structure, designed in the traditional Gothic style of the time, is particularly known for the many gargoyles that rest atop its roof. The interior of the church is intricately decorated and ornately designed and the cathedral’s crypt is home to the remains of the saint for which it was dedicated, Saint Eulalia, who is believed to have been martyred for the Catholic faith.
There are certainly no shortages of places to visit in Europe, or even in Spain alone. Perhaps none, however, is as memorable as the city of Barcelona.
