Last fall, Australian travel writer Susan Bredow experienced Pure Adventures’ tour of the Costa Brava region in Spain. This 8-day self-guided bike tour starts in Barcelona and finishes in Girona, and covers an easy 35 kilometers per day. While cyclists can explore this region any time of year, autumn is the best time to experience Costa Brava. The weather is extraordinary and the fields are brimming with ripe pomegranates, apples, figs, and olives.
The region is well known for the pro-cyclists who visit and train there (“Our Hotel Historic at the top of Girona’s old town has made a feature wall of the worn and soiled Lycra of cyclists,” writes Bredow), but cyclists who are visiting Spain for pleasure, not sport, will build an appetite for the cuisine.
“Our bicycle tour of the Costa Brava is less about building stamina for the world’s great cycling races than about building an appetite for some of the world’s great meals. Girona claims to have more Michelin-starred restaurants than any other place on Earth. It is home to El Celler de Can Roca, which is considered the world’s best. People book more than a year ahead to eat here,” writes Bredow.
