Ljubljana and Its Dragon
The capital of Slovenia, Ljubljana is considered the hub, the very heart of the country, and for good reason. Its central location has long been deemed the crossroads of the Slavic world, something that has influenced the fascinating German and Latin cultural makeup of the area. Today Ljubljana remains the country’s cultural, economic, educational, and political center. Given its strategic location and long, rich history, Ljubljana also happens to be a fantastic place to visit.
The symbol of the city of Ljubljana is the mighty dragon. This symbolizes power, courage and greatness and can be seen just about everywhere you turn. Ljubljana Castle, for instance, boasts a prominent image of the city’s most proud symbol. The medieval structure sits high atop Castle Hill, overlooking the town below. According to historical records, the building has quite a long and sordid past, having been continuously settled since around 1200 BC. Over the years, the Ljubljana Castle has served as a defense, an arsenal, a military hospital and even a prison. Today it has been fully renovated and is a popular place for weddings and other cultural events.
Another popular landmark in Ljubljana, the famed Dragon Bridge, also boasts the city’s symbol. The impressive structure was built in the early 20th century, stretching across the Ljubljana River and is considered a protected technical monument. Although it serves as a practical means for motorized traffic to get from here to there, the Dragon Bridge is considered to be the most beautiful of all those produced by the Vienna Secession. The bridge is flanked by four massive sculptures of the mythical creature of its namesake, and legend holds that when a virgin crosses the bridge, the dragons wag their tails.
Visitors to Ljubljana will certainly not find themselves lacking something to do. The city is home to one of the world’s oldest philharmonic societies and every year, there are more than 10,000 cultural events held there, from musical, art and theatrical events to those of a more alternative nature, including 14 international festivals that attract attendees from all over the globe. Those who enjoy outdoor quests will also find everything they’re looking for in Ljubljana. The city is remarkably diverse, with landscapes covering everything from wetlands to mountain ranges. What’s even better is the close proximity of everything. In one day, you can experience both Alpine and Mediterranean climates as you explore the area’s magnificent natural beauty.
Perhaps the most attractive feature of the city of Ljubljana, however, is not its historical buildings or many events and festivals. Rather, it’s the very atmosphere that the city embodies. Regardless of its size and large population, Ljubljana has somehow managed to maintain the charm and laid back feel of a small town. Yet, at the same time, it exudes vibrancy and an underlying feel of life and excitement. It’s a destination that has weaved rich tradition with modern sensations for a dynamic cultural experience unlike any other. What will you discover in beautiful Ljubljana? Come and see for yourself!
