Guided vs. Self-Guided Bike Tours: What’s The Difference?

Guided_vs_SelfGuided

Over the years, a question we get often is “what the heck is the difference between guided and self-guided bike tours?”. Even seasoned guided tour cyclists are a little nervous entering the world of self-guided. What’s this mean anyway? Maybe self-guided means you’re dropped in the middle of nowhere with just your bike, backpack, and some water – “see ya and good luck!” Left to fend for yourself against the elements for that “extreme cycling” adventure experience. Yikes!

Contrary to popular belief, self-guided doesn’t mean you’re left to your own devices in the middle of the Napa Valley Wine Country (well, I guess that wouldn’t be so bad). In fact, many of the perks of guided tours are also offered, or optional, on the self-guided tours. And although there’s not a guide per se on the self-guided tours, a service hotline is provided in case of emergency.

In short – if you’re looking for a little more freedom and independence on your tour, taking the plunge into self-guided may be for you.
